Gold PSP - Image 1

For US$ 200, this is a truly luxurious handheld console to hold. When you have something this grand in your hands, you expect something great with it as well. Well folks, don't bet on it. Although this lovely piece of handheld has its luxurious look, it's still has its flaws.

This "champagne" gold PSP is a Japan-only release. Although it's intended for the Japanese market, Sony Japan has taken into consideration that the foreign market might be interested to import this golden item.

The handheld is also capable of playing all U.S., European, and Asian games. However, region 2 UMD movies are unplayable making U.S.-released UMD movies can't be played. So in the end, this lovely item is only beneficial for its target market.

Unless you're into Japanese things and all that, I suggest just modding the case of your PSP and spray painting it gold. At least you don't have the hassle of switching languages or not getting your movies played.

"Hence, they made an effort in adding an option to switch the language of the OS, from Japanese to English. But the problem is, how to do that is all in the manual and the manual is in Japanese. Great."

So wtf? Last I checked this was just a psp with a different color. So, you know, use the psp manual that's already english? Or maybe, well, use the english firmware that already exists? They don't need to translate what they've already translated. Idiots.

 » os language?

I imported a Japanese white psp using lik-sang and I had no problem telling the system that I wanted everything in English. I don't understand what the hell the problem is, you are talking about system language right? anyway another thing about importing a psp it seems that when you update through the network, you get the update from the country it came from, since when i downloaded 3.10 i got the playstation spot icon under network which allows you to download content from download centers all over japan, kinda of like the ds download thing.

"This is a Japanese region coded PSP. While it will play all region games (all US, European, Asian games), it will only play back region 2 UMD movies (DOES NOT playback US UMD movies). Operation manual is in Japanese but actual operation can be switched from Japanese to English at the start up screen. We only ship the latest firmwared PSP and we will not be able to find a specific firmwared PSP for our customers."

If the regions are the same as DVD then Region 2 includes Europe as well as Japan. Something I always found odd.

US & Canada NTSC Region 1
Europe PAL Region 2
Japan NTSC Region 2
Mexico NTSC Region 3
Australia PAL Region 3

Hmmm why didn't the bundle Mexico with Japan so that at least the TV systems would match?

Australia is Region 4.

Region 4 also works in Europe which is Region 2.

My Scrubs Boxsets are Region 4 aswell as my Simpsons season 2. they work in Europe.

» I have a Jap white psp and I live in the U.S

I got a white psp off ebay. Trust me there is no hastle with getting the Jap psps. When you turn it on the first thing it asks you is what language you want, so I selected english and I havent been able to tell its a Jap psp.

I don't buy UMD movies because I just convert my current DVDs to mp4 files and play them off my 4gb memory card. So I get all my games, mp4 movies and everything else anyone does on a psp.

If you want the gold psp just get it. painting it is MUCH more of a hastle than selecting english, I can't believe this article is even suggesting painting it is easier.

ALSO... the white psp which I ordered about a month ago (my first psp!) shipped with 2.81. I was easily able to downgrade it to 1.5, then upgrade to the current custom firmware. So I'm playing NES, SNES and full resolution games, plus I've got GTA and all the other great UMD games that work perfectly.

So -- just import the gold psp, works perfectly in the U.S.

Yeah, no ***** sherlock. Every PSP is capable of playing U.S., European, and Asian games. Oh what's this? It can't play other region's movies? NO OTHER PSP CAN EITHER!
I dont usually make comments on these articles because of how poorly written they are, but this one takes the cake of the stupidest article I've read in a long, long time. Thank you QJ for setting the bar so high that other online news sources couldn't possibly match up to your vomit-inducing writing. How about QJ gets some real writers instead of these elementary school drop outs...

 » UMD movies?

Most stores quit selling UMD movies because none of them sold. DVD's are cheaper and have more features anyway. Its simple as hell to rip them and put them on the memory stick. There is nothing to loose when buying a gold psp in my opinion.

90% of people doesn't realize that newer PSP colors are better than the old ones. For e.g., In Silver PSPs, you can now easily play 2D fighting games doing motion D-PADS. This was hard to perform on Pink PSP and earlier. Wi-fi of Silver PSP and newer doesn't overheat. Silver PSP does not leave fingerprint but Blue PSP do leaves fingerprint like older PSPs. Etc... blah blah blah. Black PSPs are fugly as hell, imaging playing 2D fighting games and surely u'll broke your buttons easily before you could perform character moves (no offense black psp users) but hey its the first PSP ever created. So my point is its not just new colors, it also have the improvement that earlier PSPs should have.
