PlayStation PhoneRumors of a PlayStation Phone runs high as the 5th year anniversary of Sony Ericsson draws near. As part of its October festivities, the Japanese-Swedish conglomerate jumps up anticipations as hints were given during the media conference in Malmo, Sweden.

Sony Ericsson Senior Vice-President of Product and Application Planning Rikko Sakaguchi reveals, "The company is working on something although the surprise must be kept for the future." He further added that the project is not to create a new gaming device but to integrate both gaming and communication functions.

The WEGA-branding Sony Ericsson is using for its TV-enabled handsets will also be utilized for this project and Sakaguchi declined to divulge things further. The company's standard timeline for developing a new lineup takes around two years. With that said, we will be waiting for 2008.

 » Good but...

If it is for implementing advanced gaming capabilties for Sony-Ericsson mobiles, that might be awesome on the condition that they study and learn from the unsuccesful N-Gage experience. But if it is meant to implement mobile phone capabilities to the PSP... since PSP is bulky enough to hardly fit in your pocket... well I highly suppose that it's gotta be for the PSP2. Well Sony won't, by the 2 next years, continuously deny a PSP redesign project, if not a new PSP development will they?

Take a look at what happend sum1 decided to intergrate a phone with a concolse.u had the n-gage, so its sony, the n-gage had gr8 graphics for a handhelp at the time, near ps1 graphics, stil didnt sell that well, resulting in what we see today,nd i dont think that people want what was tere last time, holding a brick to ur head to speak? if sony decide to go through with this, they better really really think it through and come up with a miraculous invention.

you know what? psp is perfect, well mabie not PERFECT, but is perfect enough... adding a phone to it would rock, who cares? my psp is suppose to be a handheld, not mainly a phone, so your "laws all cellphone must follow" does not apply... PSP as phone would rock!

One less item to carry.

Every1 keeps comparin this to ngage. The ngage failed because it was the first time nokia tried to make a games console. They didnt have any killer exclusive games which would make you want to buy it.

Sony however have a giant fanbase and many games from the PS1, PS2 and PSP (soon PS3) for support. Sony ericsson is also a good brand of mobile phone. A combination of playstation and sony ericsson isnt likely going to fail and go down the road of the ngage

» I think it could work...

With a usb attachment and a firmware upgrade it could work especially with the psp headset they already have out for the psp. You would plug the usb cellphone receiver in, either in the settings or through an app on the xmb menu, give it an idle option where it will underclock the psp to 20-100mhz, what ever cellphones can operate at while waiting for calls to save battery life, if you get a call it will ring, you answer or if your playing a game or listening to something, give you a backround ring or a popup option to answer. Im sure someone can figure out the details of it more than i can right now and make it work easily.

But 6 brought up the n-gage. It failed for a larger reason than it being a handheld and a cell. The verticle screen, poor game library, and keypad killed it for a gaming handheld. The screen made it difficult to play anything without straining your eyes from the non convention eye patterns you had to use, the keypad wasnt intuitive and made it easy to miss buttons. Developing games for it was probably very problematic and a ***** too. Plus it was a new system with no previous user base.

The psp on the other hand already has a large installed userbase, a large library of games, with more comming out. If they used a usb add on cellphone receiver and a firmware update that would use it so it could keep longer battery life while on waiting for calls and able to get calls while in use then I know alot of people that have been holding out on getting a psp until it got cellphone possibilities/

i would compare a PSP phone to a sidekick rather than the n-gage.

   by Sparksalot (Unregistered) - 2006-09-05

N-Gage would have worked if it was released nowadays. Its problem was that it was too early. A bit like HDTV.
Lmao, fiver says its a sony ericson with SLI
lmao....imagine....

 » Hmmmm I dunno....

1. it would require a USB attachment, and a bluetooth attachment to work in conjunction with bluetooth earpieces, so you can keep the main unit stowed while in operation.

2. it would DEFINATLY need a firmware upgrade making it only available to those who upgrade, (I already have a nice cellphone plan so Im not worried about ditching the cell for the PSP full time, besides the PSP has like a 6 hr battery life? )

3. Getting cellphone providers to register a PS would be almost impossible to achieve, considering MOST of the time you have to use the phones that the providers supply (not all the time tho) But I DOUBT people will be rushing out to upgrade their firmware and cancel their cellphones because of this feature.

4 now if you said there was a GPS/Camera/Cellphone attachment that wasnt a cell phone but a Sattelite phone that worked EVERYWHERE on earth, I'd consider adding that to my arsenal of stuff, and have a 2nd PSP for those features, but untill then, Im not impressed with the decision

uhh why not just buy a phone. the psp hardware isn't capable of being a cellphone... making a cellphone usb is pointelss. you are pretty much taking a real cellphone attatching it to a psp and calling it a psp phone.

 » look..

if u dunt like it, dont descriminate against them or argue, its pointless. more accessories 4 the psp, the better. and maybe other people have uses 4 them, ur not the only person in the world with a psp and in a homebrew community

It's been done. Sony Mylo.

   by myself (Unregistered) - 2006-09-06

some people have no imagination. u fail to see the possibilties of the psp. it has wireless, all it needs to make calls alrdy is a software feature like skype or vonage to make internet calls. there's alrdy a homebrew in progress to make calls on the GSM network (as of now, it can only recieve calls, not make them). Then that would be FREE cellphone use. Add in the PSP camera, and there's your video calls. just like on MSN, but portable.

I know what you mean, I wanted an Ngage cos it was ahead of it's time, but I'd compare it's failure to the Amiga CD32 - A 32bit console released about 5yrs before the PS1.

People were scared of it though, and didn't think games on CD would work... lol.. Bad marketing didn't help either, though I loved the ad of the robot playing it, then it's head exploding... lol

I'm not sure if a PSP Phone would work, but it'd be interesting to see...

» why not just port skype?

the psp is capable of a lot.. and with the socom headset with a built in microphone i see no reason why anyone tries to port skype as a homebrew to the psp..

Anyway even if Sony doesn't make a new PSP console but instead will just add an attachment for the current PSP then where will the Sim Card (or at least that's what Singapore calls it) Go to? (I might be saying what others had said but I just didn't read them...)

   by #1 *****a (Unregistered) - 2006-09-06

I believe it's a good idea. At least you don't have to carry both your phone and your PSP cause your PSP will be a phone.
