Multiple Firmware ModuleAdmin Note: Some of here at QJ have a suspicion that 0okm may be playing a little prank on us, so we feel we should warn you that the following may be a bit of a satire on 0okm's part regarding the current modchip madness. ;)

0okm has posted some more information on the PSP Multiple Firmware Module in order to clear up some misconceptions about the product, mainly the fact that this device is a Module and not a Modchip. As most common users don't know the difference between these two pieces of hardware, 0okm has tried to clear this up with an FAQ on the Multi Firmware Module.

The firmware module is for:
  1. Development and research into PSP system firmware
  2. fw 1.0/1.5 users to play with a newer firmware functions and have an 'unbrickable' PSP.
  3. Bricked PSP owners to unbrick their PSPs (need another FW 1.00/1.50 PSP or "PC EPP LPT Interface Adaptor")
The PSP Firmware Module will cost less than $50 US and will be easy to install with only 20 points needing to be soldered. Here's the interesting part for those not 'in the know'. The difference between a Multi Firmware Module and a Modchip is that the module integrates with the current circuit board, whereas a modchip is a new chip with an integrated circuit. The firmware module supports FW1.00/1.50 + FW1.00/1.50/1.51/1.52/2.00/2.01/2.50/2.60/2.70/2.71 etc...

The module works on TA-079/080/081 PSPs, and just as with Undiluted Platinum, owners of TA-082 PSPs will not be able to use this module. When the "PSP Multi Firmware module" starts to sell, 0okm will show users how to distinguish these PSP hardware differences without the need to open the PSPs case and invalidate your warranty.

0okm is currently looking for a producer to mass-produce the firmware module, and expects it to be in production as soon as July! It will be inside the PSP, but apparently will be very easy to solder. You will be able to write to the flash externally using the PSP's USB function, or using a "PC EPP LPT Interface Adaptor" (available for around $15); in essence being able to 'downgrade' your 2.xx PSP.

We will be keeping you apprised of updates as they come in. It looks like the future for 2.xx users is bright with the development of hardware modifications for the PSP. With both this and Undiluted platinum currently in development, we can all look forward for a better future for the PSP community.

i've got to get me one of these!

 » Oooh..

Sounds pretty funky, but not so sure about all the soldering.

I'm wondering how many people are going to start offering a modchipping service and then charge both an arm and quite possibly an additional leg for it.

cant wait to hear a price for this, cos hopefully my friends that have firmware higher than 2.0 might get it. Also it will be interesting to see how easy it is to solder, because soldering n00bs like me still probably couldnt do it, so it will be interesting to see installation prices. Also, another point of interest will be wether undiluted platinum prices drop because of this.

Looks to me as someone needs to learn about voltage regulators there is no reason why the UP modchip if it is real of course want work on all PSP just by regulating the voltage properly an all it would mean that the wiring for the different modes would be slightly different so a very easy thing to do

any way good luck with your own project Ookm it's looking good and hope to see it on sale soon and hope you don't have to many technical issues during the production

does this mean no soldering?

 » difference??

#13 The artical says it "only" needs 20 points to solder. So no, soldering is needed.

"The difference between a Multi Firmware Module and a Modchip is that the module integrates with the current circuit board, whereas a modchip is a new chip with an integrated circuit."

I still don't understand the difference...

   by Kemp (Unregistered) - 2006-06-18
 » read it again

No, it means exactly what it says, you can write to the flash via USB or a parallel port adapter.

   by yoshinatsu - 2006-06-18
 » No big difference

I still can't understand the difference, too.
This thing may not be a modchip, but if it is able to downgrade 2.50 to 1.50 then where's the big difference?
ALSO, I hope "bricked" people did not trash their PSPs...

 » Clarification

My previous comment was to "tps*****s" not Percival.

I was going to rip the photoshop job apart, but instead found my way to the authors site and he claims it is a ''(simulation picture)'' so i'll let him off; this will be a good thing for the PSP no doubt, nice work 0okm...

BUT...

''Use PSP's USB to copy the FW image file from PC to PSP Memory Stick Duo - then Use software to program the NAND Flash''

Pardon me but anyone in the know, or have an idea whether this is possible? The only way i could think this possible was if the chip came pre-flashed with a firmware on it, else how would those with 2.7's ''Use the software to program the NAND Flash''

Is the software on the pc or the psp? or both?

 » nicee...but brick on bricks?

but is it possible to brick your psp with this? can you unbrick a modded psp with another mod chip?? lol...damn this is hottt. 15$$!!!

Devhook is so much better the only time i would use this is if i bricked my PSP if i wanted multi firmwares DevHook would be my choice

   by lukahn - 2006-06-18
 » Difference

The difference between this, and the modchip is simple. With this, it's just going to be one square to solder onto the existing motherboard of the PSP. With Undiluted Platinum, you need to instal another motherboard ontop of the existing one.

Basically, this is going to be smaller, and hopefully alot easier to put in.

i just noticed that on the pspupdates page it sais this has 154 jump ups, but here it sais 129.... just thought i should point it out.

 » to #22 what a noob

can devhook allow you to use firmware 2.71? nope. This module will allow devs to take more risks knowing that there psp are unbrickable so people will have better homebrew.

well there will be updates to devhook i dont think its going to stay the way it is forever. if you want to take the rest of opening your psp and maybe messing stuff up be my guess but unless you got a bricked psp i dont think its worth it

   by stupid (Unregistered) - 2006-06-18
 » stupid

u guys are stupid this does not downgrade your psp, it makes u feel like u downgrade ur psp because you will be able to switch between firmwares. there is no actual downgrading going on.

this doesnt UNbrick your psp, it makes ur bricked psp use-able by adding a second flash.

   by yeah (Unregistered) - 2006-06-18
 » ooof

this thing looks a lot more useless than undiluted platinum. a modchip has its own flash and memory whereas this uses the psp's. i think this will be a s hitload slower. and 20 points of sldering doesnt sound quite easy. anyway, sony says firmware updates will block out undiluted platinum. either way, you might as well ebay a 1.5 psp cuz the modchip is quite expensive(99.bux) and for installation service, another 99.

#27, there is no "rest of opening your PSP". Haven't you read anything?
