A Japanese gamer has today revealed some more information on PSP's elusive PSOne Emulator, which is included with the magical firmware 3.0 that was released 48 hours ago. Using the PS3, the gamer first bought three games: Tekken 2, Biohazard, and Jumping Flash. I hate to burst the bubble of those who are expecting for straightforward PSOne emulation, but Tekken 2 was around 542 MB and it took a very long time (around one hour) just to copy it to the memory stick.

Another flaw of the PSOne emulator is that, by default, the analog stick was made a replacement to PSP's lack of the L2 and R2 buttons. This means that moving the analog left = L2, right = R2 and up = L2+R2. This may be a little annoying, especially because it will hinder your ability to use the analog stick in-game.

Screen Modes available are Original, Normal, and Full. But according to the gamer's blog, there is quite a bit of lag when changing between these two modes. Also, the PS3 assigns a 'usage ticket' to the game, binding it so that it is playable only on a certain PSP. Presumably, you will need to register that PSP with the PS3 for the PSOne games to work.

Click on the video above to see a PSOne game being successfully emulated on the PSP!

Surely the analog stick can be changed?

"This may be a little annoying, especially because it will hinder your ability to use the analog stick in-game."

You choose whether to use the analog stick or dpad.

You have the option of using analog stick for movement + dpad for R2/L2, or using dpad for movement + analog stick for R2/L2.

Sony would never make a mistake like disallowing the use of the analog stick.

Hmm... What if me and my buddy both have Tekken 2 on our PSPs, does Sony have dealt with a way to use the built-in WIFI on the PSP so we could kick each others ass on multiplayer?

Using analog stick for L2 R2 was the best way to go imo. The analog stick on the PSP is crap anyway and PSX didnt even come with analog.

I don't see a problem with paying 6 to 11 dollars per game, thats a good deal. If the registration is anything like what they did with flash and wma support, then once 3.00 is successfully emulated, it shouldn't be a problem to register and use the psx emulator. Who really thinks that we won't find a way to fool the program? I don't see why there won't be 3.00 emulation coming around by as soon new years with such a big discovery and the christmas break time.

Still, I don't know how well the emulator will perform. I still remember Bleemcast which was made by a group of third party homebrew creators for the dreamcast (200 mhz processor) that ran psx games full speed. Sony supposively stopped them from creating more emulators for extra compatibility with their games by offering to pay off their business debts. The graphics of the Dreamcast emulator surpassed both the playstation and the playstation 2! (at 800x600 resolution). Sony doesn't impress me. It's possible to do much better.

I hope you can download them for free too, and then get busted for illegally downloading games. Seriously though, people like you don't deserve to even touch a game system. Grow some balls and just steal the games from the stores why don't chya..

i now vote for sony to make a ps2 to psp controller adaptor.
it can fit through either the remote control port or the usb (mini b) port than insert ps2 controller on the other end.

 » Wot?...

We have three psp's in the house and we can only afford 1 PS3, so it is not possible to register each PSP and dl the PS1 games for each PSP?...

   Re: Arwin (Unregistered) - 2006-11-23
 » Sure

Sure that's possible. I think you can also put your downloads on 5 PSPs in total. The PSP in question just has to be registered to your PS3.

 » I h8 sony

sony sucks so bad.

our only hope is that some 3rd party developer will come out with a clip-on piece of hardware that has both another analog stick and 2 more shoulder buttons that can plug into the serial port. I'd pay 25 bucks for that.

This left = L2, right = R2, up = both is crap. Might as well not even play the damn game.

by whoelse (QJ. NET Staff) - 2006-11-23
 » Personally

Personally i dont mind the anolgue or D pad for R2 and L2. Its the most logical way to do it. Dont know how they will do it with later PS1 games using extra anolgue sticks. I wish he showed us saving his game on the memory stick.

   by kv (Unregistered) - 2006-11-23
 » :/

I wouldn't mind paying for the damn games if there was a way to get them otehr than a PS3. Why in gods name are Sony doing this!? They know damn well that this won't make poeple buy a PS3, and it's impossible anyway because there's practically non left.

Sony have gone from respectable to retarded.

   by Sephiroth1089 - 2006-11-23
» Sony Has a reason for only ps3 right now

Sony has their reason for only allowing the games to be placed on from ps3. They want to limit people from illegally obtaining the ps1 games from the internet. They want to get paid for every game they sell for the ps1 emu. the only way they can do this so far is by using the ps3 as a medium for transfering the games which lets the psp run the game. Hopefully they will find a better system one where we can just buy it from a playstation store in our psp web browser.
