PSP Slim - Image 1

Japan's Nikkei Net news service has some good news for everyone excited about the Sony PlayStation Portable's upcoming Skype capabilities. The source says the service will launch this month and even gave us a head start on the details.

Nikkei Net says that Skype will only be available for PSP Slim & Lite units. Users can download the Skype program and readily load it to their units. A special microphone will then be used to communicate.

It was also reported that PSP to PSP calls will be free of charge. The same goes for PSP to PC calls. If owners want a dedicated phone number for their PSPs, they can have one at the cost of 2,250 yen (US$ 20.70). That's valid for three full months of use.

This comes after Sony supposedly revealed the new function. There have been doubts along the way, bit it's mostly looking good for PSP Skype as we head into CES 2008.

» What about the OG PSP!!!!

Wow c'mon Sony, this service is great and all but you gotta remember the OG PSP's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 » Maybe

I'm not positive but I believe it's because the original PSP doesn't have enough internal storage (FLASH0 space). I believe the PSP Slim has more (they would have to be idiots not to add more).

 » WTF SONY!?!?

Skype has been in the works since 2.71 PSP 10001k
and now when it comes to being finally released it's
a PSP 2000k app only?

I have the SOCOM headset for my PSP 1001k but
is there a headset released for the PSP 2000k
cause I haven't seen one yet.

Maybe this is why the headset hasn't been released yet, because they want to make even
more money off it this time around and charge
people more because it will be called the Skype
headset instead of the communicator for SOCOM.

I think we're being had.

I see no reason why Sony can bring it out for the phat psp's. They could easily make it bootable from a memory stick.

 » Re: Sooks

We all know Sony isn't ever gonna make any of the Firmware features bootable via MS cause then they will get hacked like the Firmware updates do.

 » Hopefully it gets hacked

Since Sony doesn't care to come through for all PSP owners I'm hoping this gets hacked so that everyone can use it.

I don't care how many people use this to prank call people with, it is a feature with no reason to be Slim only and Sony will get a real piece of my thoughts on this.

 » wow...

I was really into this feature... but I own 3 old PSP... so if this only works in the new slimsp I will be really angry...

Look at the Zune... they all have the same OS in the zune... that only changes is that the new one is a lot more good looking, more zine and slim... they never let wifi tranfer music in the PC to zune... they let the old zunes do that too... and everyone is happy....

Anyway no one will buy a new PSP just for this feature, that is good (the best feature in the PSP since a while)...

Just let's see the next week...

but the new zune doesn't have any new features software-wise. All it is is slimmer. The PSP slim has more memory and flash space so it is more able to take advantage of new features. Besides sony wants to incorporate new features in the slim to boost its sales.

Don't compare a wonderful handheld like the PSP to that piece of absolute crap iPod rip off. I wouldn't even steal one of them nevermind buy it.

 » Oh no

I was so looking forward to this, but I'm not going to by a Slim to use Skype on PSP!

 » me like.

I hope it'll werk with the chotto shot cam, just like in the uk in 2006 where they could make psp to psp calls. i think the phat will be able to use it and this special microphone could be the old socom headset, I know it works with the new remote because MYPSP Robotica works fine with it for voip video and voice. I would say it will werk with the slim, they're just making you sweat. It's been there and its a download to ur mem stick like BEATS not an installation into the firmware itself.

Seems they already forgetting about there original fanbase and moving onto they're newer fanbase, this is the ***** up of being the first buyers of a console you get F***ked somewhere down the line - thanks for noting Sony.

i was so excited as i heart that skype comes to the psp in a legal way, but now im pissed off because it will only work on the 2k psps( without any manipulation or homebrew stuff)
and as mentality says: sony look to ur roots ans thanks for NOTHING

 » Great.....

Same thing happened for me with the 1-seg TV tuner for PSP. Couldn't use it natively for the original PSP. Thank goodness someone figured out a hack. If it is at all possible for Skype to work on the original PSP, I'm pretty sure a hack will be released.

If it werent for dark alex and the homebrew scene psp's wouldnt even have a point in the US. I didnt buy one till i started reading all the stuff i could do with the custom FW. Japan has a point in purchasing one for simply a GPS unit, TV tuner and digital camera. I had to buy my cam from japan on ebay and spent 80 bucks. I dont understand why there only marketing for japan. Playstations have been a american loved console since i can remember. And it seems lately were getting jacked. As far as skype ill pass im not being forced to upgrade my psp for such a wack feature. Maybe if they start offering all the good hardware ill think about it. TV tuner and gps with good US maps would be nice. Ill stick around and wait for a good homebrew app for webcam and chat like maybe a good yahoo messanger client for psp or something else. Homebrew will find a way for us US psp owners =) .
