PSP Homebrew

Wow... apparently our attempt to make everyone happy has failed miserably. Maybe we were out of our minds, maybe we were completely wrong, maybe the whole thought of adjusting the rules to compensate for some confusing wording was based in insanity. But that aside, realize that we DO listen to our users, and the majority of you seem to think we've gone complete farbot.

So, in what is surely an even more confusing move, everyone should disregard the earlier message about the coding competition. We do have some very nice entries from developers who DID follow the rules - and rules are rules. We apologize to those who may have been confused by the rules as stated and released their programs elsewhere, but unfortunately those programs will need to be disqualified.

So - game on! Everyone who sent in a qualifying entry by last Sunday will be judged (if there are more than 10 entries that qualify) and the public polls will open on August 27th! Our thanks to EVERYONE who submitted, whether you qualified or not. It is all of you who keep the PSP Homebrew scene alive and well. Congrats!

However, the one guideline we will cheat on is that all entrants will be given Developer status on our forums which means Premium Membership... surely no one has a problem with that little smudge of the rules. ;)

Unreleased huh, well that sucks for the people who released and could very well be a lot better than some of the unreleased stuff...

Letting a contest finish then changing the rules. Fantastic. Why bother with rules in the first place if you are just going to change them whenever you please?

   by Recipio (Unregistered) - 2006-08-22
 » Why?

It clearly stated that you couldn't release your submission anywhere else before this contest so they obviously broke the rules. So if enough people break the rules you decide to change them?

Now you'll most likely get all the games from the NeoFlash competition with some slight changes just so that they can enter here too. I thought you wanted original games.

Changing the rules AND requiring us to have that splash-slash-advertisement screen?

by Jake D. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2006-08-22

The problem was that the rule about being unreleased wasn't as clear as it could've been. That was our fault and we're trying to do what we can to make up for it.

And to #7, the Splash screen was part of the rules from the very beginning.

"Must be new submissions. Any new version of a previously released application or game will be excluded from the final judging."

Sounds rather clear to me.

I'm just a bit disappointed as I wanted to show my game and see what everyone thought. But I guess I can improve it a bit more before the deadline.

Can whoever that recieves the submission emails please start answering them just so you know that they got there? I got really confused when I sent my submission and got nothing back. Just a small confirmation would be nice.

And by the way, is it ok to release screenshots of the game before the competition ends?

 » ummmmm...

Ok... I'm a little confused -

2. Will Accept Versions: We will accept updated versions of existing programs, unlike the original contest rules which stated it must be a brand new program. Developers who have already sent in their submissions may send in updated versions as well.

4. Unreleased: The program must be unreleased to the public at the time of judging! It's no fun announcing a winner that is already "old news" because people have been playing it already!

These two rules clearly contradict each other...

 » ProgramLua's Entering!

ARza and I have drastically changed ProgramLua. We will entering in a new version of ProgramLua into the contest.

Oh, and #10, here's your answer: Already released programs cannot enter, but new versions of a released program can enter. Rule #4 is saying that that version won't be allowed into the contest. Okay, I hope that cleared things up for ya.

   by Kagato - 2006-08-22
» Thought that might be the case...

I did fire off an email to the submission address to clarify exactly this situation, but I didn't get a reply, so I took my chances. I only had time to write one new game, not two...

 » Centralisation.

I think it's rather unfair - as others have been saying on different boards, it sounds like an attempt to centralise some of the best fresh homebrew on the QJ Network. Not impressed.

 » hahah

just admit no one submitted anything good for you to even post on your website... everything went to neoflash... your contest ended with crap on your hands... so this is ur finaly try to make somthing of it... try changing up the prize packs...

1st: psp w/ modchip installed + 4gig card
2nd: psp w/ 2gig card
3rd: psp acessory pack ( everything from face plates to 2gig card)

then your see people throwing things ur way... as of know i think ur prizes are a joke to people that spend alot of their time to code something nice for your site to get traffic.... my opinion of course:)

by Not impressed (Unregistered) - 2006-08-22
 » This is unfair

I think this is completely unfair. I did not enter my game into the NEO Flash competition because I wanted to enter it into the QJ Comp and the rules clearly stated I could not do both.

I worked long and late hours to have the game ready on time and now after the closing date QJ move the goal posts.

I really thought this competition had the edge because it encouraged people to code original games instead of updating old versions. That, to my mind, is better for the homebrew scene because it means New Release not just more updates.

"2 Will Accept Versions: We will accept updated versions of existing programs, unlike the original contest rules which stated it must be a brand new program. Developers who have already sent in their submissions may send in updated versions as well."

This changes the entire nature of the competition, AFTER THE CLOSING DATE. It's a complete farce. Poor form QJ. Basically you have dis-advantaged the people who followed your original rules.

So now we are looking at a two comps where 75% of the entires are going to be almost identical. What's the point........

I Agree do the right thing and judge the contest now.

And whatever mistakes you made this time, take them as a lession learned.........

by Jake D. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2006-08-22

All I can say is that I grow more and more disappointed with some of our users every day. Looking for conspiracies where there are none. Looking for alterior motives where there are none. And of course the endless accusations without having a lick of understanding about the real situation.

Our sole and only concern in this matter was to make it as fair as possible for ALL the devs - those who understood and followed the rules, and those who misunderstood and didn't.

After all the complaining from people who have NO BUSINESS complaining (read: non-devs) the only thing we've learned is to not be so compassionate and stop trying to make everyone happy.

This decision was not made on a whim, and well recognized developers such as Fanjita and PSMonkey were asked for their advice on the matter, and they approved of this solution as being the fairest alternative.

The truth of the matter is that no matter what decision we make people are going to be pissed. If we go ahead as planned, the dozen developers who submitted to us AND released their programs elsewhere (be it on NeoFlash, our forums, another forums, etc) will be pissed. If we don't disqualify them, the people who DID follow the rules will be pissed.

There is no way to make everyone happy - so in our minds the best alternative was to provide an ACTUAL competition, not a contest between 3-5 programs which were all the qualified after it is said and done. There's no competition in that, nor any fun.

All I can say is that any "versions" that are submitted will be judged on the progress made since their last version, and extra points will be awarded to completely new programs who submitted their properly. After that, it will be narrowed down to the judge's top 10 and then it's in YOUR hands.

So really, all this griping is moot. YOU are doing to decide who wins anyways. If you don't think a program should win or even in the compo at all, don't vote for it - it's as simple as that.

 » Coup Out

"Our sole and only concern in this matter was to make it as fair as possible for ALL the devs - those who understood and followed the rules, and those who misunderstood and didn't."

I think this is being naive, the rules were plenty clear and I'd say most people who didn't follow them where chancing their arm. It was easy enough to enter both comps. because all you risked was being disqualified from this one. You have done nothing for those who followed the rules.

"The truth of the matter is that no matter what decision we make people are going to be pissed. If we go ahead as planned, the dozen+ developers who submitted to us AND released their programs elsewhere (be it on NeoFlash, our forums, another forums, etc) will be pissed. If we don't disqualify them, the people who DID follow the rules will be pissed."

So instead of disqualifying those who chanced their arm and didn't follow the rules, you have decided to piss of the people who did follow the rules. You should judge this comp as advertised and next time think more about whether the closing date clashes and what criteria you judge on.

"After that, it will be narrowed down to the judge's top 10 and then it's in YOUR hands"

This is a coup out. You are supposed to set the tone of the comp. And it started out looking like a really good vehicle for some original homebrew. Now because you did not get the response you wanted you change the rules. Moving the deadline is bad enough, but changing the entire nature of the comp. is terrible. It is easy for you to throw you hands up in the air and say look guys this is for your benefit, but how is running another comp. that will have all the same entries as the NEO comp. going to benefit anybody ?

by Jake D. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2006-08-22

Touche...

... and it's "cop out"... sorry, that was driving me nuts! LOL!

We concede, all is as it was. Hopefully the second change of our minds doesn't cause even more discontent. All I can say is that we were wrong, but it was for all the right reasons.

by the way it was (Unregistered) - 2006-08-22
 » the way it was

I think it should stay the way it was originally stated. If people didn't follow the rules tough that's their own fault. Plus the people that did follow the rules (I'm talking about the ones that didn't have as good an app/game as the people that got disqualified) shouldn't deserve to be crushed by a bunch of "cheaters." But I somewhat agree with whoever it was that said you guys should offer better prizes. The ones that are availible right now are kinda gay. Even though I admit at the announcement of the contest the modchip wasn't out yet, come to think of it I don't even think the 4gig was, but seriously if you wanna change the rules now you could have a while ago too and offered a better prize. It is quite obvious what Lik-Sang did as their part of the partnership, offer the prizes. Isn't it quite obvious though that they gave you their "trash." They gave you some of the crap that they have tons of because no one else would buy it..well I said what I needed to say. As long as the people who entered their stuff in another contest are disqualified I'm happy..

 » From the sublime...

The only way a Dev gets disqualified is if they entered the game somewhere else first. So how can 'These devs have worked hard on making this homebrew for you' if they have already submitted it somewhere else ? By trying to submit in two places you are just trying to get a second bite of the cherry. The guys who didn't enter it anywhere else are the ones that wrote just for this comp.

My entry is valid!I've made my game specially for this contest, and it was sent only here,so i'ts valid! And as most contestants have been eliminated my chances increase a lot!Sweet...

   by Kagato - 2006-08-23
 » Fair decision.

I'm disqualified as a result, but I accepted that going in when I decided to also submit to Neoflash. The rule wasn't 100% clear (given that I didn't expect beforehand that the Neoflash entries would be submitted "in public" on their forums, anyway); but I knew there was a good chance I wouldn't qualify if I did so.
I think this is probably the most fair decision.

Good luck to all the entrants! I look forward to future contests :)

 » I agree with Recipio #6

I found the rules to be rather easy to follow, but i still do not even know if my submission was even received let alone valid. I even send an email with "request receit" just to make sure they got my submission. is there anyway you guys could just verified a submission was receive and possibly valid? I dont even care if i win, i just want that premium membership really.

Is there a link to see all participant to this contest?

   by Sepheroth - 2006-08-23
» Coup out, you douche you.

Jake D, as well as the rest of the QJ.net staff, seem to be trying very hard to make this into a successful competition encouraging developers to create new and original homebrew. They realize that it was a mistake to have had thier competition run alongside another, and they feel bad about everyone that will be disqualified because of the second competition.

There's no reason for you to be such a douche and critisize him for trying to make this competition more successful and exciting. If you made something, then you're probably one of the ones who followed the rules judging by the fanatical tone you have of "If you didn't follow the rules than too bad". This new update obviously shows that they're actually agreeing with you and aren't going to accept anything that would be disqualified as the original rules stood, so you having this attitude is both pointless and retarded.

Congrats to all the participants that weren't disqualified.

Except for Coup out. No vote for you.
