How expensive is it to develop a game for a game platform?
  • Last year in Japan, the average cost to develop a game for the Sony PS2 is $1.2 million.
  • For the Sony PSP, it's only $541,000.
  • But for the Nintendo DS, the average cost is a measly $342,000.
Now compare these numbers with some familiar facts.
  • The PSP came out and sold for about $250 ($249 or so), while the DS came out at $149 or so.
  • New games for the PSP cost around $50. New games cost about $35 for the Nintendo DS.
  • Nowadays, you can find bargain bundles. A PSP bundled with a game (usually a "not-so-popular" game) can go for around $199. But a DS bargain bundle goes for about $149.
In terms of price, it seems like Nintendo is the way to go.

But the PSP is a powerful multimedia device. It's a technological heavyweight. Those strengths will help explain these facts:
  • Last year, Nintendo exported only 7.34 million DS units while Sony exported more: 11.36 million PSP units.
  • Within Japan, Nintendo did amazingly well: Nintendo sold 4.25 million DS and DS Lite units. Sony sold 2.61 million PSP units in Japan last year.
Does this mean the Japanese go for price? While the rest of the world (especially the USA and Europe) are more likely to go for expensive technology? Maybe.

Is this important? Well actually. I don't care about it one bit. Why? Because all this talk of "PSP pwns Nintendo DS sucks" and "PSP suxxorz LOL bye" doesn't change the important things. Gaming is on the rise. This is according to a report released by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association or CESA (it makes a report every year about the state of the Japanese console game industry; the sales figures in this article came from their report).

Total worldwide gaming sales (both hardware and software) have grown since 2004 because of the DS and PSP. They resurrected the dying handheld market, and in the process, they rekindled interest in gaming (for example, people who would never have bought a console found it easier to buy the affordable handheld units, and now that they realize how much fun they're having, they're waiting for the next-gen consoles).

So, after all the spamwars and flamewars and all the forum hating, both the DS and the PSP are to be thanked for this healthy upsurge in gaming sales. This is a sign that we should all hold hands. Can't we all just get along?

This is true we should all get along better, since both consoles are helping the handheld market.

i dont know about these facts "dying handheld market" im pretty should a few reports down from this one it said the GBA is still selling... I dont see how the handhelds are dying. The only one that did really really bad was the n gage because of bad marketing and pricing.... They where dieing when Nomad, gamegear, Lynx but its changed alot since then i think that handhelds are doing every thing but dying...

You'll always get the die hards that will say that whatever system is dead, etc.. I see it all the time on gaf, they seem to attract the most nintendo fans I've ever seen.. one bad word about the ds and its flame on... all I can say is, when I look at anything, I check the specs out, the price and I buy what I think is the best, not last year's turd :) some people are happy to pay less for last year's turd, not me.. I go with the male stereotype... power, sexy and well built. It might cost an extra $80, but its sure worth it.

» i don't care too much for specs

i just want games.
good for both handhelds, but i want more original titles or atleast total revamps instead of ports for the psp and the ds could use some classic n64 ports to it like turok 2, jet force gemini i mean they could add more creativity to them instead of a direct port but come on or even pod racer ep 1 O.O xD.
but its good to see that da platforms r doing fine anyways o.O

Like the last comment we see here, number 8 proves to be what we have to avoid becoming. Whether one system is better than the other. Is all opinion, and we need to respect Opinions from both sides maturely...
You can't expect me to believe you are mature enough to handle a game like GTA, if you resort to 5 year old thinking on the "PSP vs NDS" debate.

Now what we have is Fact's and facts is, that the NDS and PSP are doing very well, and reigniting the intrest in handheld gaming. Congratulations Nintendo and Sony.

DS is superior. People who say otherwise are just regretting that they spent a million dollars on their PSP and that Sony is treating their customers like crap (eg FIRMWARE).

I'm not regretting that I bought my psp. It seems like one of my most worthwhile purchases yet. I like enough games for it to keep me satisfied. Being able to put movies on it is awesome, and all the homebrew available is very useful and fun. The firmware battle doesnt really bother me either. I can play all my games with devhook just fine. video rss isnt big enough for me to care that I'm missing 2.8. If there's no more devhook past 2.7 then I simply won't buy 2.8+ games.

The DS is pretty cool too, I might get one eventually.

Funny how I am always being handed sympathy from DS owners, who are often half my age, for me having bought a PSP. News flash: I'm 100% happy with the PSP! I've tried some games out on the DS and guess what... I. Don't. Like. It. If you like the DS, go play with yourself in private rather than out in places where it isn't welcome nor justified.

you know, am really impressed that this is one of the most mature comments I have ever read in this site, no flaming no crap, every one talks with some point in minde while respecting the other side, hope it stays this way because it improves the moral of everyone.

now my take on this discussion, well both systems are good, and when I decided to buy my PSP I bought it because the games appealed more to me than the DS did, am not syaing DS is bad, but what I am syaing is everyone has a different taste, in the end we all win I that know sounds very lame, but when this makes both Nintendo and Sony work even harder to pleas it's customers.

How expensive is it to develop a game for a game platform?

(* For the Sony PSP, it's only $541,000)

I don't know about this fact of course a new game may cost approximately $541,000. Why don't you post how much money Sony actually spends on the other games (PORTS) maybe less, way less money than the $342,000 Nintendo spends on new games. Let's face it there is a big percentage of PORTS on the PSP, not only that but Sony still has the nerves of not releasing new games for the PSP for weeks, but well I hope they do good with their supersmall library of PORTS, their superexpensive/superlimited UMD's and their superstupid firmware upgrades.

Well I think thats its great how both the DS and PSP are doing, I bought a PSP, but not because I didnt like the DS but because the the DS games didn't interest me at the time, now with games like Final Fantasy III, I'm thinking about buying a DS, to me is all about the games.

 » Agree

I bought both systems when I could (ok so I had to buy a used PSP because it was so god damn pricey in Europe, students aren't rich around here) and for the moment I happen to find PSP often collecting dust on my desk, but I still know many guys who totally prefer it over DS for reason you all have heard from flamers. To the point:
Both consoles have done really well because they target different audiences, and that's a good thing. Wii and PS360 also target waaay different people. In the end that just means that it is more likely for anyone to find a system that they like and that has games/other usage that they find useful or cool.
It is also good that they have expanded the handheld marketshare, because mobility is the future.

It is highly likely for someone to prefer either system in the end when they pinpoint their own taste and needs. I selected DS for the games that I like a lot, it's simply my gaming system. Then again I also haven't sold my 1,5 FW PSP (yet), because I like the pure geeking with techical stuff^^ I can't find the movies etc. to be of any use to me as I have a MacBook for those.

Crap, it turned out to be a hardware comparsion after all! Both won the iNF-Reward. Gratz for teh loot.

» One Good, the other Better, but both are Great

I must agree. Both portable consoles are great. I have 2 PSPs and 1 DS lite, so I'm new to the whole DS gaming platform. As an adult, I've been leaning more towards Sony, but with some of the newer innovations from Nintendo, I had to take notice. I think I associated (and still kind of do associate) Nintendo with "kids stuff" and the Sony with the Grown up gamer. The truth is, as the article implies, they are both great handheld units to own and enjoy.

Moron, I copy pasta'd the short description from the article. I'm no Nintendo fan boy, I own mostly Sony consoles. The only reason I'm sticking to Sony is because of JRPG's, I dislike Sony as a company.

@ 12, yes devhook is awesome and is the only thing keeping me from selling my psp, but please admit the Sony FW upgrading crap is bull*****. Especially with the latest firmware 2.8 and how it collects our personal info.

imagine you only had pizza hut in your country. how would you satisfy your tasty hamburger apetite? this would suck for all people that like hamburgers, no? fortunately there are hamburger chains. this means that people that like pizza are happy, and people that like hamburgers are happy.

this is exactly like psp and nds.

» it not about the price its about the games..

Plian and easy, PSP needs more titles bad. Only way it can stay on top is if they get more developpers to consentrate on making big game titles instead of getting movies out. This is what people want, hope sony learns from this.

Big example is philips cdi.

 » Ok, I can't lie

At first, when I barely got my PSP (and a few months into it), I was a hardcore PSP fan. I'd be like those fanboys who would just say that PSP owns DS and that DS sucks cuz PSP has all the features and stuff. I'd even persuade my friends to rather get a PSP. But now, after a while in the PSP market, I've seen that the PSP's getting more horrible. Direct ports, more on multimedia than gaming, etc. And have now come to the point where I ALSO want a DS (Lite). Now, I'm not saying that the PSP sucks and that (now) the DS owns, I'm just saying that I didn't give enough time for the DS and now I've come to like BOTH handhelds. So yeah, don't hate on one handheld and like on the other, let's just all thank BOTH of them for letting us experience something new with handhelds and getting more people into the gaming industry.

» Bah PSP is a crap gaming machine

As a gaming machine with ORIGINAL titles, original IP's, the PSP pretty much sucks compared to the DS. Combined with its price, it's not surprising that it's getting it's butt kicked by Nintendo.

The same thing with no doubt happen with the PS3 and Wii. The Wii will be dirt cheap while the PS3 will be expensive as hell, all because of Sony's insistence on making machines which can do 'everything'. A year ago people were laughing at Nintendo and already counting them out of the next-gen console wars, and now they're seen as a major competitor. Sony's got a lot to learn, especially if they screw up with the PS3...

» God it's STILL going on

What did the guy just ask? If we could get along. What are people doing? Whining which system is better.
Excuse me, but I have both the DS and the PSP, and I like both. At one moment I play mostly on my PSP, but the other moment it's my DS.

If you have a 1.5 FW PSP, and a flashcard for your DS, they're just the same. Great systems with great games. One system may have a few more better games than the other, but WHO CARES?

I enjoy DS games more. But I do enjoy the massive amount of homebrew the PSP lets me use. Not even beginning about the emulators for the NES and SNES. Altough these days that can be done with the DS as well.

If ANYONE makes a comment about which one is better, I will murder them. They're both great gaming machines which are succesfull, one more than the other. Who cares, just play the damn thing. As long as YOU like it.

   by blast (Unregistered) - 2006-08-12
 » oh dear..

gabe, I hope you're not implying that the wii will be succesfull judging by nintendos previous console, the gamecube. that system was so gimped it's not even funny. even the damn xbox outsold it in the US. when ps2 came out everyone was *****ing and moaning about the price, but you know what sony came through with the content, and now the ps2 is the most popular console. the same thing will happen with the psp, and the ps3. nintendo needs to get out of the console market and just stick to their gameboys.
