PSP custom firmware: CFW v3.51 M33 - Image 1Some Russian coders going by the name Team M33 have released PSP firmware CFW v3.51 M33, to the delight of PSP owners everywhere. This pretty much means more homebrew for more people.

All of the functions the v3.51 firmware have been retained in this release including PS1 support, high video resolution, MP3 visualizer, and Internet navigation. You can also expect to be able to launch official UMDS which require v3.51 firmware which is pretty good considering the sizable libraries some people have collected. For those who want more, the firmware also allows direct launching of ISOs/CSOs, homebrews, and PS1 images.

Here are some of the other features you might want to know:
  • Ability to alter the CPU speed of the PSP
  • Recovery mode
  • Multi-region
  • Customize all your icons and more
The instructions for installation are in a file called readme.en which you can open using any text-file editor. If you're doing this for the first time, please be careful since custom firmware could possibly brick your PSP, so remember to read the instructions completely and follow it to the letter. That said, enjoy the PSP firmware CFW v3.51 M33.

Thanks to everyone in the QJ.NET community who sent in tips regarding this, we really appreciate it!

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth wouldn't work for me in this firmware unless I disabled UMD auto-start under system settings, dunno if any other games have that side-effect.

 » freezing

i have had freezing issues, but only after i flashed a custom xmb on, the background, top menu and font worked fine until i tried to check my system info, then it froze, also in character set. once i flashed the back up of the flash0 i had made back on, it works fine.
so when they customise all your icons and more, they really mean customise all your icons and more, but your sub menu's wont work and freeze your psp.
never the less, this is a ***** hot result, and 'spasiba' to them ruskies!
people that are getting on da's case in these posts should think for a second, as good as this is, you dont think for a second that the comrades at M33 came up with this ***** do you?
fair enough they made it, but where did they get the basics from?

   Re: Sentinel (Unregistered) - 2007-07-14
 » curious...

I've taken the liberty of examining the 'update' files before and after installation and compared it to DAX OE releases.
I've noticed that theres ALOT of different things like module names and other misc. unknown files.
In my experience of things like this. It's too much of a coincidence that 'team m33' had somehow managed to get a hold of DAX source files or else they wouldn't have been able to create this release in the first place.
For those whom have been watching WAY too many hollywood films and even considering 'reverse engineering' technique is just plain wrong. Such thing "CANNOT" be achieved without proper knowledge of the encryption of the DAX OE releases. So I'm not going to go in much detail regarding that.
My point is that I have this gut feeling that this could be 3 of the following.
1, a 'lucky' coincident for the homebrew community for they need another coder that understand the importance of the CFW releases.
2, DAX himself is behind this or even somehow involved to the creation of this.
3 and my MOST probable, is that this is Sony's way of 'countering' the HB Community and have encoded some *bad sequence that would hinder the use of iso's/wahtever it is they chose, not neccesarily straight away (as in straight after u install this) but to give them the upper hand to finally cripple the hb scene in a manner that they would control. For eg. They could have program this like they did to the TA-0XX mobos that if you were to downgrade to 1.50, you wont be able to go back to their more recent FW updates such as 3.30+. (I think it 3.30... correct me if i'm wrong)
It could be something like that, that they could have planned but this installation alone isn't the 'trigger' just the key to the door as per say.
Because after digging around this 'M33 3.51 CFW' release, I have noticed a few too many redundant files that could be nothing or could be something BIG.
I implore for those who knows enough to execute such 'test' to do the same and perhaps you might see what I'm talking about and maybe even discover something concrete to this "theory" (hopefully).
I do hope that this is just NOTHING and congratulate Team M33 to this recent 'most wanted' installation and it's successes.
So don't flame me cos I spoke out 'honestly' and tend to have a more cautious way of seeing things...
Any POSITIVE input/replies are welcome. Nothing that could initiate a thread war though. Cos your just wasting your time.
Happy homebrewing to all...

dude, i think you have been watching too many movies. Its pretty clear that they reverse engineered it. Go look at the forums at maxconsole, there are some people who are doing the same thing, but they are taking longer....either that or DA is using another name

   Re: Wolfi (Unregistered) - 2007-07-15
 » re to the re

Yeah, for the hollywood guy, don't worry, reverse engineering dark alex isn't harder than reverse engineering sony :), and i don't see da speaking russian on the official site of the release, sony neither :))

Then if you think that this cfw is dangerous and could kill our kids, don't dl it, and just shut up :p

Funny... because that's exactly what some people were doing. They managed to reverse-engineer systemctrl.prx, reboot150.prx, and several other files, and I reverse-engineered the DXAR format and wrote my own 3.40 OE flasher that takes just one second longer than the official one.

Shut your mouth if you don't know what you're talking about.

Can't wait to see alot of "it works great" or "I have a brick post" before I try it out. JUst like becus25's first releases. Great work though comrads Since we can't rely on mighty DaX for perfect cfw anymore.

Can this run game backups (Isos)?

   Re: Moke (Unregistered) - 2007-07-14
 » C'mon...

The same platform of installation...
Same recovery and recovery options...
The whole process is IDENTICAL to Dark Alex's CFW OE versions.
Not to mention the end result.
The ONLY thing that is different is OBVIOUSLY the name but besides that. EVERYTHING ELSE IS THE SAME!
Could somebody tell me if this is either a HUGE coincidence or just a bad joke.
Is it Team M33 aka Dark Alex's 2007. Cos DAX is 2006 and below. Is this the best he could do? If I'm right.
Because I'm sure that some FW guru from Sony wouldn't take long to figure out that this work is his.
Or is this part of their plan? +.^
Team M33 aka DAX 07 + Evil DAX working for Sony to undo some of the damage he had caused. And this is just the begining.
I think Sentinel is up to something legit...
I'm with you man! well I wish we are wrong though...
And this is just paranoia... LOLZ! :D

   Re: metalspector (Unregistered) - 2007-07-15
 » LOL

OMG Yeah theres something big going around here (shouldn't have trusted russians...). Well if anyone else have taken the liberty to access flash0 on their psp you should see that theres over 1mb of free space! This seems impossible as 3.40 OE left like 300kb or less (I beleive they added stuff to 3.51, not took out). Anyways I see some files in flash0 were edited cause some flash0 files on official 3.51 take a bit more space in kbs! Anyways something is very wrong and really fishy, I wish I could go back to 3.4 OEA now cause I have a bad feeling this russians are about to do something bad on psps that upgrade to this!
