CPSertThe scouts of QJ have kept their watchful eye open and thus have come up with the news of a possible emulator for PSP that plays arcade style MAME-like ROMs from Capcom. The reason we say "a possible emulator" is because, at the current time, NJ - the person who is working on the project, has decided to stop because of speed issues that he thinks are insurmountable or at least not worth the effort.

Speed is always the issue with emulators, and with the limited memory of the PSP, this is even more so the case. NJ explains that the PSP has but 20MB to give to game data out of 32MB, with 4MB for the emulator and 8MB for the OS.

Because of this, developers are forced to make their code fit into an ever tighter space; avoiding excess in order to gain and maintain the speed necessary for a good playable game. The bottom line is that NJ tried several different approaches in an attempt to get the emulator to run smoothly and at normal speed but, he always seems to end up with sound problems and or speed issues that ruined gameplay.

CPSekekIt was these recurring problems that eventually caused the original developer, NJ, to stop working on it completely. There were hopes that the source of the project would be released so that it could be taken up by a new team of developers, but it has not happened yet. Fortunately though, the test version of the emulator has been released (just now, hence the delay of this post) so that you can at least try and see how far it has progressed.

UPDATE: The mark of a phenomenal homebrew developer is resilience. Well, the name NJ has became synonymous with that word, and why did we say that? The guy just released the CAPCOM CPS2 Emulator for PSP Test Version 3. According to the good developer, several bugs in large textures were corrected, he also renewed the rominfo.dat. and sound and background issues were somewhat fixed as well. He remains realistic about the challenges of creating a CPS2 Emulator for the PSP. But as far as we can see, the guy seem to not want to give up on the project just yet.

 » WHY?

This emulator looks like it works great. I also tried Puzzle Fighter and it runs smooth. Hope he tries again. I WANT TO PLAY MARVEL VS CAPCOM

   by xiringu - 2006-08-04
 » i don't understand

why does he say it doesn't work? and that there's a problem with the speed?

I found this emu a few hours ago, and it played every game I tried so far

i created cache for all of them and the results I had seem very impressive

fps during play:

1944 - (65-80 fps)

GigaWing - (50-70 fps)

Mighty Pang - (70-80 fps)

Puzz Loop 2 - (65-70 fps)

Super Gem Fighter mini mix - (40-50 fps)

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (65-70 fps)

why on earth does he say is not fast enough? somebody explain it to me...could it be a misinterpretation or bad translation of what he said?

 » mvc

He should release it where it allows us to play Marvel Vs Capcom. So what if it has no sound, I'm going to be playing it in school and I always turn off the volume

   by Knocturnal - 2006-08-04
 » Great

I think it was a bad translation of what he said because i've been trying the emulator out on roms for an hour with Great results

19XX - Runs perfectly with 2 frameskip on.

-Capcom Sports Club

-Darkstalkers: The Night Warrior (slowdown at the first few seconds of the fight then you're ok)

-Dungeons & Dragons :Shadow over Mystara - Same as Darkstalkers. Small slowdown at the start

- Eco Fighters Perfect

-Giga Wing Perfect

-Megaman 2 Perfect with 44mhz sound and full screen

- night warriors: darkstalkers revenge (50-60fps with sound quality at two lowest settings without screen stretch...Don't really need the psp version of dalkstalkers now)

Street Fighter Alpha 2 - (60 fps with , video sync off, auto frame skip enabled, 60fps limit off)

   by xiringu - 2006-08-04
 » i forgot...

I forgot to say that the default setting for sound is 11Khz, and I was playing at 22Khz when I got those fps, and for me, the sound was just right. I didn't notice anything wrong

settings I used:

Zoom (16:9) full screen
sound: 22000 Khz
60fps limit: OFF (to see how far it could go)
autoframeskip: OFF (no frameskip !!!)

and he stills says it's slow?

of course, there's must be some big roms that doesn't play, but that's just normal

the ones I've tried are in the range of 5-15mb compressed in zip

   by xiringu - 2006-08-04
» Knocturnal: about the slow down

the slow down is only the first time you play, because it has to load the cache (at least in my case)

play once, the cache loads up

the second time you play, it will go just perfect

sorry didn't see #20 when i posted. is it running smoothly bruce?

» You can play many games.

Almost all games are playable (actually full speed, mind you). Press start+select to enter the menu and take off the auto frame-skip, set it to 1 frame skip, full zoom (16:9), and set the sample rate to 22050 for better sound. Most games that give the message, "This game will not work, so stop trying", actually do work. To get them to work, you'll need the US version along with your original. For example, Marvel vs Capcom will look like this in your roms folder:

mvsc.zip 21.5 Mb
mvscu.zip 1.93 Mb

Notice how the mvscu.zip (the US version) is only 1.93Mb in size. The same applies to the other versus games.

BTW, can anyone tell me the file name and/or folder placement for adding a custom background, please?

» How to get it working

Okay some games dont work and says " This game will not work, so stop trying " but it wont work cause that version of the game is not working so u need to find a different version of that game which is a clone of the original game

1. get the original version of the game
2. get the clone of the game
3. convert both of those games
4. put the cache stuff in ur psp Cache Folder
5. put the roms in ur rom folder
6. load the emulator
7. run the clone not the original game
8. HAPPY GAMMING !!

just follow the video options of post #25 for the best performance :) good luck every 1
