Here's a rather tricky question for all PlayStation Portable owners: Are you willing to sacrifice access to the UMD drive of your Sony handheld in exchange for more internal storage amounting up to 30GB?

Well, if you answered yes, then this mod is for you. Tony Hoang (aka PvP) of popular console modification website AcidMods has just created exactly that. He explained that he initially went for an internal wiring but the circuit gets mess up when he connects it to the PC.

Anyway, here's a video clip below showing the mod we've been talking about. Attempting this kind of mod for those who are not so skilled may cause damage to their units.

 » Wow...

That's pretty cool. I wonder what internal storage he used for that.

» Umm... No. No, no, no.

Somehow he's magically running the Windows program USBHostFS from inside the USB device?

No... just, no.

Be quiet.
You have no friends.
Nice mod :P

 » no thanks

That looks incredibly dumb with the USB connector coming out the top and going into the UMD drive area.

 » How?

Thats only possible if the USB storage device itself was running the USBHostFS server... Wonder if He stuffed an Ipod in there and its running linux with USBHostFS..

 » hmm

i would have took the risk with my phat, since i nver use it anymore since i got slim, but it wasn't too appealing seeing the video. Especially the usb plugging itself, not so good looking, it's like a fat antenna, no, "it's like the teletubbies" - plain wrong...

 » what u mean

grab pen and paper, thats just a stupid video not a tutorial on how to do it

 » Hmmm

I thought anything with ISOs/CSOs wasn't allowed in the news? This video clearly has that in it.

 » i can do this

im on the verge of doing this my self, just need to find a usb B end of the cable, and my old storage device, i got an idea for the usb aswell

   Re: JaXeRiR - 2008-01-04
 » Dude...

Don't waste your time. This vid has been proven to be fake. It is not possible to do this, unless he has an other device inside his PSP that can run USBHostFS. Well, there are such devices, like someone said, iPod with Linux running on it. But this is absolutely impossible with just an mass-storage disk or anything else.

 » What's the point?

I believe we all should help each other here, in the scene and in the world.
Why is this here and nowhere to tell us what did he do or how can we do it? It certainly would be very usefull to everyone who is interested in more capacity. Although 4gb sticks are already quite cheap, 30gb is a little more attractive than.
About the isos and csos, I also agree that it can be a little perturbing, but if he bought the UMDs, I believe he has the right to do that.

Cheers! ;]

 » sweet mod

man just keep your mouth closed. It works there are some down falls like the usb cord but it is a easy fix that the original moder has been working on. he is adding a switch and getting rid of the usb cord. he is waiting for some parts. it is a great step for more storage to be added to the PSP.

   by Binary - 2008-01-04
 » omg wow

I can do that too and get more then 30GB's.

DUH old news!

That's why we got Irshell, you can that on wireless too. QJ needs to stop hiring noobs!

 » xD

True. But now you can take that HDD where ever you go, nd without the need of an internet connection. Isn't that better?

Nice mod! I would like a tut though. +P

yeah but I think that mod is a hoax. LOL

their is no way a hard drive can fit in that...

"their is no way a hard drive can fit in that..."
Have you checked out the new iPod Classic? I believe it's what....160gb in there?...hm oh ya it is. That's not flash memory either dude. HDDs can be fitted that small in case you were wondering, they're just more expensive of course.

 » Music

I stopped watching after the first two seconds. Why? The music was some ***** techno with a ridiculous baseline. This isn't a dance club, it's a PSP. I wouldn't put death metal on a commercial advertising tampons, now would I?

 » Umm.. OK

Funny... My mod does the same thing but i don't have to run USBHostFS. Instead it runs right off the XMB. the USB Cable can be disconnected and I still have use of my UMD drive.

when I get it running Smoothy (still REALLY buggy at the Moment) I'll post my own video. But it's nice to see someone else has the same idea I had. :)

   Re: JaXeRiR - 2008-01-04
 » But

I assume that the storage media you used isn't over 30GB, I think it's much lower... And I also assume that it isn't internal?

   Re: the Calamity - 2008-01-06
 » Whaaat?

u can fit 30 gb on internal drive right off the xmb? AND your umd drive still works??? Howw???
   by GamefreQ - 2008-01-04
 » wow

This would be nice, I would buy another PSP for this, IF IT WASN'T SO UGLY, AND I COULD USE MY PSP'S USB CABLE WITH IT. If there is no way to transfer those files, then what good does an empty 30 GB hard drive do? If I could make it work like reassigning ms0:/ to an internal hard disk (without need of USBHostFS) through hardware modifications, and make it so the memory stick drive reassigns itself to ms1:/ (for irshell) or something useless like flash3 or flash4, I will be able to access memory stick and hard drive, which would be amazing. At the moment however, this looks more like a nice irshell hack than anything else. Good idea, just doesn't seem to work. Maybe he did shove an ipod in there running linux with usbhostfs. But that would be a serious power drain.

 » may be fake

is there a tut yet? i believe this to be fake after some stuff iv been working on for a while, the reasons being, that the psp cant operate an external device like a pc can to activate usb host, it does supply power through the usb tho(strangly) so it can activate the device, but getting it to access the usb host is a problem i keep running into,

   by jrfhoutx - 2008-01-05
 » jeez...

ok guys look, it is real not a fake (when has AM released anything that isn't real? we're not like some sites...), it does work, and we all know that the PSP is not a USB host device, but that doesn't mean that this can't be done, after all we've been tossing around this concept in our R&D department for well over a year now and finally PvP got it working.

As for a tutorial, when it's in it's final incarnation and works as PvP wants it to, he will release details on how it works and will make a tutorial if he wants to.

   by potat4o - 2008-01-05
 » ...

I would rip out my useless UMD drive just for some good internal storage space..

   by xCHRISx - 2008-01-10
 » why

couldnt you just shove an ipod with linux like someone previously said in side there? wouldnt that work?

and i wonder how much power that 30gb is sucking from the psp battery, i bet you the battery doesnt last even half as long while using that drive
