PSP music - Image 1Here's some good and bad news for PSP music player users.

Steve Jobs had recently made a move of making DRM-less music available on iTunes. Files embedded with DRM, or Digital Rights Management, cannot be played on the PlayStation Portable due to restrictions. This recent update from iTunes can be also translated as letting the PSP download music from iTunes, as long as you're connected to the internet, which is easy.

Now here comes the bad news: While you'll be able to download music, playing them will require you to connect your PSP to the computer in order to move the music files from the iTunes folder into the PSP's music folder, which kind of kills the purpose of being able to download music with the PSP on the go.

We can hope for a firmware update for the PSP that will fix this problem, though. Maybe even in time for the PSP firmware 3.50's release.

That's ok, I'm sure someone can create a simple homebrew app to move the music over to the proper folder on the go.

Whilst IRShell is capable, it is not the ideal solution. I'd prefer it to be instantly transferred. ;)

Ever heard of PSP Filer?

And 3.50 firmware has been released in Japan. You know this. There won't be any more changes. Plus the old I-tunes songs are still DRM'd, so what is the real deal here?

 » Upgrade

You can upgrade old DRMed music to higher quality files without DRM for 30 cents. The problem is just that most labels still require DRM. EMI is the only major labor to allow DRM free music to be sold, at least so far.

The real story here is that Itunes PLUS will support the PSP with DRMless tracks. That is why you can't just download straight onto the PSP. Still... Why the heck would Sony work to implement Itunes support? They have there own music managing software and store don't they? 3.50 was released and definitely didn't include support for Steve Jobs.

+1 manaox2.
Sony indeed have their own trashy sonicstage + drm atrac. No way they would do anything towards apple music XD.
btw, is drm-ed atrac playable on a psp ? (with the magicgate rubbish stuff maybe?).

 » two words: mytunes RSS

MyTunes RSS is an awesome app that with the correct configuring (a little port forwarding and a little work with http://www.dyndns.com/) one can set it up to be a music server that serves up downloads or RSS feeds of all of your DRM-less iTunes Music. It is very easy to use and it is free! I've set up my own password protected music server that I can access through the PSP's web browser anywhere I have an internet connection. It's awesome because the PSP supports RSS feeds, I never even need to download the music...I just stream it.

Excellent, useful, and informative post. I'm also using MyTunes RSS and it works beautifully.

DRM+ Digital rights Management, which means that an outside agent has control over what you can do with your files, and can also delete them.

iTunes+ A program to download, play and transfer movies and music to iPod

hope that cleared things up

 » uhh..

correct me if I'm wrong because I don't own an iPod, but in order to download music from iTunes, wouldn't it be necessary to have the iTunes program on one's psp? You can't load iTunes on a psp so how the f#*k would you download mp3s from them with only your psp and a wireless connection?

I'm with you. Dont you need to have your ipod hooked up to your mac or pc in order to recive the music?

Oh wahhh, You have to take an extra step to move the files.

it is a bit tricky to do that. Just how are you supposed to connect to your pc away from home? it requires your own wifi ip adress.
