Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) PR Manager Al De Leon has announced that Skype for the PSP is now live. PSP owners in North America can now use place calls using their handhelds provided there is a Wi-Fi spot in their area.

For those who don't know how to access Skype using their handheld, De Leon posted a pretty good guide on how to do so. Here's the guide as taken from the PlayStation Blog post:

  • Download and install the 3.90 firmware upgrade to the PSP-2000 system.
  • Connect the PSP to the Internet at a Wi-Fi hotspot.
  • Attach a PSP Headset and the Remote Control from the PSP-2000 Headphones to the system, and insert a Memory Stick Duo to save the Skype application software.
  • Access the Skype/Sign In icon within the Network category of the XMB menu. If you’ve never used Skype on your PC, you can create a free account directly on your PSP. If you already have a Skype account, you can simply enter your username/password.
  • To make a call, either access the Contacts icon and click on a name or scroll to the Dial icon and use the keypad.
In case that wasn't enough information to get you started, here's a short video of Sony's PSP senior product manager John Koller explaining the entire process.

Any chance of this coming to PHAT PSP? Or is it not possible due to amount of ram? Thanks.

» Hey kid none of this stuff is useless

You do know that Sony is trying to make the handheld into everything put together as in being able to call people and such and GPS, camera, I see the PSP as a great device where I only need it and nothing else.

Oh yeah by the way, the reason they don't take location Free player out is cause the PSP and PSP SLIM is supposed to be an all in one device.

You will keep on seeing this from Sony because this is the all in one multi media device with everything and PSP2 will have even more stuff like a PDA and such.

Some of us like these features in our SLIMS, so don't be angry cause you got the bad end of the bargain. You should have gotten the SLIM aswell, since you have a phat. Slim is better in alot of ways.

I agree with you and especially with ANUBIS X's
statement about the "all in one multi media device".

I agree and I love it. This is what I've been waiting
for the industry to produce.

All the PSP2 needs aside from what the PSP-2000
already has, what's already set for future fw
updates, what ANUBIS X said about the PDA
functionality "hopefully a Windows Mobile OS" or
close to it and this list of upgrades:

Dual analog sticks

Four shoulder triggers

Built in cams Front/Back
for both taking photos and video calls.

Bluetooth

Higher sys RAM

Built in HDD and a "Higher Storage Medium"
like 64GB Pro Duo and up.

And while I'm at it I'll add one small thing :)
It's been on my wish list for a few years now.
It's called "LED Projector".

It's a Video Projection System that runs both
Cool N Quiet and Energy Efficient and happens
to be no bigger than a Chocolate Mint.

Something like that placed in the PSP or even
as an add on like the GoCam once was,
wait.... still is.

Then I believe you might be one step closer to
an "All N1 Device".

Have fun checking it out.

If you think thats cool check out "HelioDisplay".

yeah all this would be cool, but this has 2 BIG disadvantages:

1. the price. would be over 500 %u20AC ( or 750 $ or whatever, i don't have the exact exchange rate :p)

2. the battery. It will run out in like..... 2 minutes.... ok, that is a bit exaggerated, but it will run out damn fast.
