As everybody knows by now, both Nintendo DS and Sony PSP let you surf the web. The PSP got browser-power early on, but thanks to the Opera browser, the DS can surf the web, too.

But are they equal?

On the one hand:
To surf with the DS you need to buy the Opera cartridge for the DS cartridge slot and a RAM pack in the GBA slot (the RAM pack is for cache storage). We haven't heard any official word if Opera has an update in the works, but if there was an update...well, think about it: the Opera browser is lurking within the DS cartridge slot, so you'd probably have to take out that cartridge and buy a new cartridge with the update in it (maybe by trading in your old one?).

But on the other hand:
To surf with PSP, you only need a firmware update (as reader j commented in a previous article, "the psp is betta because its free"). If Sony has an update for your browser software, all you need to do is get it from Sony. Of course, for a number of you PSP users here at QJ, being forced to update firmware threatens your homebrew games and apps.

But on the other hand (assume I have four hands, OK?):
Surfing with the DS touchscreen is a magical, uplifting, and healing experience that paints rainbows in the skies. OK, that's an exaggeration, but the point is not only can you surf with the touchscreen, you can see the whole web page on one screen and a zoomed-in part of that page on the other. The only people who can experience that kind of two-screen surfing here at QJ are those whose PCs have two monitors. To use NonPartisanCon's words from a previous article, "it might push the mobile internet envelope as far as the handheld market is concerned" (that's a bit out of context; NonPartisanCon was just talking about DS browsing in general, but the words apply here).

But on the other hand (I'll have to start using my feet next):
Surfing with the DS is a slow process. Some pages don't load completely (maybe because they're timing out?). Or so they say (I haven't gotten a chance at it yet).

Finally (since I've run out of hands):
To end this PSP-versus-DS comparison, there's NonPartisanCon's very good point: "The real question, I suppose, is do you really need a browser built in to everything? This isn't a necessity but a luxury; so why even bother making comparisons?"

Compare it just for fun ^^ and you will see that DS has own pros and cons and PSP has them too so what i'm trying to say is - there is no point in comparing DS and PSP :P

 » Interesting comparison

My DS-loving friend is always talking bout the DS browser, when I've been browsing for what, a year now! I'll have to set him straight that he'll need to buy both a DS cart and a GBA RAM cart for it.

 » PSP's OSK sucks

The real problem with the PSP browser is that the onscreen keyboard sucks monkey nuts. Also, the PSP browser is based on Netfront which is nowhere near as good at smallscreen rendering as Opera is.

"Surfing with the DS is a slow process. Some pages don't load completely (maybe because they're timing out?). Or so they say (I haven't gotten a chance at it yet)"

So you've written this comparative article without actually having used the DS? A glittering career in journalism awaits ;)

 » Who Cares!?

Does anyone actually surf the internet on their PSP on a regular basis!? My guess is NO! Why? Because the screen is too small. So why is this an issue? I have the capabilities to surf the web, but I think that web-browsing on a Handheld GAMING system is useless.

 » links2

Don't have to update to surf the web on the psp, links2 does the job fine if not better than the 2.xx browser.

» I tried, and uhm slow

Ok, the only time I found PSP internet browsing useful, was when I didnt have access to the net, and a neighbour had an unsecured wifi connection... that was nice... oh and that time when my sister was hogging my aunts computer all day and night.... so I used the psp

... DAMN it took AGES to load anything! And then errors with loading up gmail ... took an age to type the message too! .... I'll go with the "web-browsing on a handheld gaming system is useless" job

 » I like PSP Browser

I do actually like the PSP Browser a lot. It allows me to read the forums at night when I go to bed, or the news, or even pspupdates (which takes a while to load, but not forever). It's pretty good and looks great - especially the just-fit option works well for forums and such.

The only site I have problems with is the gamespot website, which runs out of memory. All other sites so far have loaded (non-flash sites, mind you).

I'm using firmware 2.8 now, which is yet again a tiny bit faster than the previous version.

I do think that this kind of comparison could be done a whole lot better. Hopefully someone will do it with both systems at hand, updated to the latest versions. Stuff like that the PSP supports all major security protocols including WPA-TSK and EAS and such should be added, and you could make a pretty decent list of stuff.

Maybe I can borrow my sister's DS lite sometimes and test and compare the browsers properly.

» ide have to go with the PSP

wider screen and free. ALso, flash player, and more ram i think. And it gives you a definate answer when youre out of memory.

I was enthusiastic about the DS Opera (opera rocks), but its not that great, people say you cant see videos on the ipod video screen (320x240) how can you browse the web on the DS screen?

 » not correct

you _do not_ need a browser at all from a firmware update in order to view webpages, I have 1.50 and view them anyway
hint: fired up / wipeout / etc

 » Browsing on the PSP

Browsing on the PSP is clearly superior and I have tried both. People were quick to hype browsing on the DS but even with the 4MB expansion memory it's clearly useless. Some sites take FIVE minutes to load!! That is no exaggeration also. And people complain that some game take a long time to (initially I might add) load on the PSP.

"you can see the whole web page on one screen and a zoomed-in part of that page on the other"

That's a pretty impressive screen size! I must have have been looking at a beta version of the DS screen because I don't remember it having THAT high of a resolution.

» Websurfing on the DS ?

Who would want that ? The screen's way too small and the system specs are way too low to think that surfing on the DS can be any fun.

I fail to see who would want to buy an extra cartridge for that... on the PSP it's cool only because it's free and integrated right into the system; I'd be very curious to see how many Opera cartridge they're actually going to sell...

» I like the PSP browser

It took some getting used to but after I did I like the PSP browser. The onscreen keyboard is a PITA BUT, if you make book marks of your most viewed websites you can bypass it all together. I even make bookmarks of google searches so I dont have to type them in again. As far as the error "not enough memory" I just change the cache size to no limit (or something to that effect) and I dony have any websites I cant bring up. The only comparison between the 2 handheld I wil make is this, I would rather have 1 large screen than 2 small screens any day of the week.

» A few thigns to iron out

The Opera browser for the DS comes with everything you need to get onto the internet, the GBA RAM comes with it. As for surfing the net, i'd say it is kind of a stalemate with the DS being more comfortable but the PSP being much faster.

For those of you who are saying that the screen is too small for the DS to have a good browser, have you considered PDA's with similar size screens?

If Opera does some work to make the browser go faster before it comes statewise then it might have a fighting chance (still the lack of flash) but until then it is a draw.

Before I go, Opera has stated that they will not be making updates for the browser, perhaps some tweaks like I mentioned above but nothing large.

» handheld browings is a perfect example of..

how the original concept of html files have become just a fainth memory.. the html format was originaly developed for having a single format that you can read no matther what device you use. it was originaly developed back when machines varied greatly from one another by which area it was used in. the concept was simple, and genius if you ask me, but nowdays the internet it just as bloated as the next 'big hit' so people missuse it to look cool and what not.
if people started caring about standards and making valid codes you would easily been able to browse the net with ease on even the old wap mobiles..

I recomend the links2 port, eventho it needs some work it imo beats the psp browser by far. having the start page set up to my memorystick and making custom calendar pages it the most usefull homebrew I have on my psp :)

To be completeyl honest, I would buy a PDA if I really had the need to browse the web portably. The PSP's browser is a complete joke and the DS, well, I haven't tried but I am buying a DS Lite for the games, NOT for a web browser. I can't make any final decision cuase I haven't used the DS one but suffice to say, the PSP's browser is awful, just like everything else about the PSP.

I have a PSP and the browser loads are nearly the same on most sites (this is on a 2.71 FW). For those with non-native browsers (ie. on FW 1.5), we all know it's a slower process to get to the browser and a slower experience as well. Of course the PSP browser is free and really only useful if you've been bookmarking. Otherwise, inputting ANYTHING is butt-ugly painful. It can be easily remedied if Sony stops promoting that new "miyo" gadget of theirs and puts those capabilities into the PSP by putting out a kb and updating the FW to have skype/MSN capability. But sigh, it'll be like UMD all over again the way Sony thinks (same with MS and the 360, they don't want to step on any of their PC brethren's toes and refuse to have native ability to play video over the network or on disc on the 360).

In my opinion neither of the devices is designed for constant browsing... But I have used PSP many times when downtown, and needing to find some information from the Internet... There are just so many WiFi spots open and it doesn't cost you anything(like 5$/15 minutes in those net cafes).

For the DS I would never buy a browser... I don't have the time to wait 5-10 minutes to get the information on the move.

But for PSP a big thumbs up for the great extra feature! I don't need to carry my widescreen laptop everywhere. :)

 » Wow...

Talk about anticlimactic. The whole article's devoted to outlining the various ups and downs of browsing the web on the two handhelds, and just when we think we're going to find out which one could truly be considered better, we don't even get an answer.

Honestly, if you think the last paragraph is a good point, you're grasping a bit.

I'd personally vouch for the PSP's web browser being better, simply because I can't fathom surfing the web using the DS's small screens, and also, I'd rather not have to buy something extra for the DS, when I could simply get a PSP with firmware 2.00 or above (or DevHook, on a 1.5 even) and have a web browser built right in.

Sure, you could argue about the price difference of the two systems then, but hey, that's just my opinion ;)
