PSPace alpha

Valk has released an alpha version of his homebrew game for the PSP, PSPace. PSPace is a port of the 2d space shooter game for the PC, 'Subspace'. Subspace was a freeware PC game in the space shooter genre, and features a top-down view. The original Subspace was a Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO), so could we see Internet play in future versions? Watch this space and perhaps we'll find out. Here's what Valk said:

"This is an alpha of a project that I have been toying around with for a few months. It doesn't have much functionality but I would like some feedback as far as to continue work on it. It's the beginnings of a clone of Subspace, a game that has been around for more than 10 years for the PC. Either way, any feedback would be greatly appreciated."

This is just an alpha, and currently there are no objectives or missions, but you can explore the map and get used to the controls. It's just a small taster of what's to come!

This looks cool. I love shooters. I'm going to have to check this out.

Hey, Chris C, you see what Kyle M. is doing here? He's posting actual news. Learn from this, grasshopper.

 » Good head start

The controls remind me of Asteroid. Once some objectives and attacks are coded in it should be a fun game.

PSPUpdates has no precedence for op-ed pieces. It has always been reserved for actual news on homebrew, upcoming games, accessories, etc, etc, not the idealistic ramblings of some idealistic idealist.

I still play subspace, under its new name 'continuum'. if this was compatible and online playable, I'd never put it down!

good job man.

now if only StarCraft would make its way onto the psp, I wouldnt set my psp down ever.

Precedence or not, get used to it. Original content is important for a gaming news site. Just ask IGN, Gamespot, 1up, etc.

We're perfectly capable of delivering homebrew news AND expanding our coverage. It may come as a shock, but your opinion isn't necessarily the only opinion... and it certainly isn't the "right" opinion.

 » yeah, big difference...

Jake D., one big difference between the original content of PSPUpdates compared to those of IGN, Gamespot, 1up, etc is that those other sites' original content deals with exclusives, interviews with those in the game industry and converage of events in and around the industry (SCEA Conference for example).

PSPUpdates, as well as it might be doing, don't fly journalists and photographers to cover those events personally and exclusively for their site. Instead what it does is allow people like Chris C. to ramble on about the potential PSP has in 2.5D technology, a perfect example of an op-ed piece. Show me when IGN has had an op-ed piece. You can't. The editors of IGN don't do that; They report, they don't opine. That would be a waste of time, energy and bandwidth to its readers, especially paying readers. Since PSPUpdates allow offer Premium accounts your paying readers are getting shafted.

I played sub-space way back when it was relatively new (I was on a 14.4k modem at the time). It was my first multiplayer game, and it was freaking awesome. If this comes to PSP with infrastructure support, that would rock hard.

Nice... I'll actually go back to playing this again if it was on psp and multiplayer...

Nice work. Hopefully you plan on adding in multiplayer support.

As for IGN. Wtf? That's the worst game site ever. The writers suck. No one knows how to actually review a game, and the word "gameplay" often means "graphics". Google-whoring crapfest. This news piece needs a fact check, but otherwise cool.

I played Subspace for years. If this gets online play it would be the greatest thing on PSP.

 » Oh dear god.

If this were actually continuum compatible, it would be completely and utterly perfect. Unfortunately, the continuum guys are very, very tightlipped about their client. We don't even have a linux/OSX port.

If you're serious I think you could get cooperation from the Continuum guys. I'd love to play PowerBall away from my desk...

 » No chance in hell

PriitK is the only guy working on the "continuum" client, so this little PSP port has very little chance of co-operation, you know?

I mean the guy worked on Kazaa and skype, I doubt he'd miss an opportunity to be an extortionate bastard and rip some money out of a guy.

 » Good Idea

I might get one if this game works with the current servers.
