PSPSONE

The news just keep flowing in! First, we had the teasers about the newest PS1 emulator on the block, PSX-P by Yoshihiro. Then there was the release which was welcomed with open arms by the whole community. After all, a homebrew PS1 emulator is not something people can code in a day!

But then, as much as things change, some things stay the same... It seems that the PSX-P is nothing but code ripped off from PacManFan's PSPSONE emulator which made its rounds on the net a few months ago. And it seems that people have a lot of evidence to suggest the same. FreePlay showed off some of the evidence while we were talking on IRC a few hours ago. Here's some of the text:

"String dump of the PSX-P:
Greets to: Duddie, Tratax, Kazzuya, JNS, Bobbi, Psychojak, Shunt,
Keith, DarkWatcher, Xeven, Liquid, Dixon, Prafull
Special thanks to:
Twin (we Love you twin0r), Roor (love for you too),
calb (Thanks for help :) ), now3d (for great help to my psxdev stuff :) )
PCSX a psx emulator
written by:
main coder: linuzappz
co-coders: shadow
co-coders: PacManFan for the PSP port
ex-coders: Nocomp, Pete Bernett, nik3d
Webmaster: AkumaX"

A string dump is basically a collection of all the strings (human-readable words) in any program. They're generally messages which are shown during the execution of the program. So, for example, in any hello world program, you can find that string when you do a string dump of that application.

That's not all. Here's what PacManFan had to say about these turn of events:

"I did pass the torch, However, Yoshi[hi]ro said he would at least mention me, and he didn't. I hate to be an a$$ about it, but Yoshi[hi]ro has been claiming that he coded this thing himself. The only change he's made so far has been to the game selection screen."

We here at QJ are totally neutral about this. While other sites have received emails from the original creators of PCSX (The guys who made this emulator for the PC), we haven't. So what we can do is wait and watch as these events unfold. Obviously, all Yoshihiro would have to do is release the source code of this emulator since the original code was under the GPL license, which states that no derivative works can be released without source code.

Personally, I hope that people can sort out this mess. The homebrew scene is on a roll lately and I don't want to see it being stopped by some petty code-theft. Let's just hope something good comes out of this.

 » Doesn't surprise me.

Figures Yoshihiro would pull something like this, he's done this in the past.

I honestly thought he could be trusted again, but after this move, he doesn't have an ounce of respect from me.

!@#$ you Yoshihiro.

No wonder yoshiro has been so dumb & stuff

   by Lemony_Vengeance (Unregistered) - 2006-09-25

Wow.... I was just starting to think that he was legit again... Meh.. I'm glad about the work he's done in the past, but I'm not sure it's really his anymore. His credibility level just went DOWWWWWWN.

 » Eh

The least I'd expect from Yoshihiro. My eyebrow raised when FreePlay claimed it was stolen [yesterday], but I didn't bother to check the file.

yohihiro hasn't done much good for the homebrew community...... except steal peoples' work and label it his own

Why not just ban Yoshihiro from homebrew? He's just a hack that can't code to save his life. I can't code at all, but I'm not going to steal someone else's work and say it's mine. Just shoot the mother*****er and let the homebrew scene stay legit.

» Yoshihiro dont listen to flamers who are lamers.

You have done great work and this emulator you've shown off has bumped PSP scene.

I mean in early 2006 the PSP homebrew scene was fading, until you and your SonyXteam, Dark_Alex, Fanjita, etc kicked it all the way back!

Just do what they say and release the source code. I mean sure you might prenounce as "bad" because of the fact that you might get duplicates, but remember that very few games can run on this and making of something the same that was already copied off is not good and totally ripped off.

Just keep going Yoshi, cuz what I can tell you is that this is the ONLY working PSX emulator for PSP, in my opinions.

 » woooo high5!!!

so yoshi ""stole"" "open source" software?

oh wait, it's "theft" because the source code is not released? maybe it will come around BETA stage instead of the ALPHA-SHUT-UP-WHINING-KIDS-HERES-YOUR-PROOF-PREVIEW

 » good grief

This must be what it's like for big-wigs at Sony and Nintendo looking at this and all other hacking sites...lol. Of course, that wasn't meant as a slam to this or any other hacking sites with good original homebrew that credits it's authors :D ;-)

Care to also mention the flashing effects?

Seriously, screw Yoshi.

Uh, #14, you do realise that because it's under the GPL license, and he didn't release source, he in fact DID steal it?

Why only yoshi have to release source? Pacmanfan have to release sourcecode of his emulator (PSPSone) too, because it's based on pcsx....

 » you r dumb qj!

all he had to do is to give us a readme and release the source code

because of you i may stop coding the psx-p emulator thx!

   by Thor (Unregistered) - 2006-09-25

Kindergarten - and the emulator sucks anyway.

by Bill Doors (Unregistered) - 2006-09-25

Ahah, wow he didn't code this ? Really ?
He's known as a professional stealer but you fu|

   by i386 (Unregistered) - 2006-09-25

YOSHIHIRO IS ABSOLUTELY INCAPABLE OF PRODUCING SOMETHING FROM SCRATCH.

He lied and got many peeps to brick their PSPs and EVERY time he "releases" something, it turns out to be stolen.

He's a *****ing retard in my book

 » lol

i knew it was 2 good 2 b true. c'mon, it's "yoshihiro"...he's not even japanese! LOL. if his name was muhammed, it woulda made more sense...and he'd start off on the "legit" leg, but wutever.

he can't be banished from the homebrew scene because he has every right to be there, legit or not. so he's not coding from the ground up...has any of you coded anything for the scene? in that very sense, if he should be banished for contributing maybe just 1% into his "work", so should the rest of us since all of us just ***** and whine about stuff that we didn't code.

lastly, if the cat did use the code w/o giving props, wow...he must be real 1337. all he had 2 do was say "yeah, nagger, you got jacked, PacManFan."

 » Yesterdays news

Someone posted a link to this in a comment yesterday.
The site in the link had actually yanked the download off of their site, saying they won't put it back up until he complies with the GPL.

Too bad he had no time to ask for money this time :'( poor yoshi

» well yoshiro deserves most of the credit

When pacmanfan was working on his emulator it couldn't run any normal ps1 rom , just a proof of concept , now yoshiro made a playable ps1 emulator usingless than 2% of pacmanfan's work , I don't really think pacmanfan deserve any credit at all. Pacmanfan's just probably jealous of what Yoshiro has done. This is like if a guy gives you 1 page of a books his writing and you add it 49 pages , I don't think the one who wrote the first page deserves any credit at all.

Wrong, PMF DID release the source code... any more dumb statements, or will u quit while ur only a little behind

   by FreePlay - 2006-09-25
 » @#19

Simple. PacManFan released the source code for all the versions of PSPSone that he RELEASED. For the unreleased versions, he doesn't have to release his code. Duh.
