Daedalus Background contest winnar! - Image 1

Hold the presses! StrmnNrmn, Sony PlayStation Portable homebrew developer that's pretty much behind the highly-anticipated Nintendo 64 emulator for the PSP, Daedalus, has just announced the winner of the Icon and Background contest that's been going on for quite a while.

The outcome of this contest, as we all know, not only decides the final form of Daedalus but also its identity, and we can honestly say that StrmnNrmn certainly does have taste. In any case, the winner of the contest is Patrick Ahmann with his unique mono eye-slash-cog background!

While the image doesn't quite bring to mind the fact that Daedalus is a Nintendo 64 emulator (the text corrects that quite frankly), it does look awesome. Plus, StrmnNrmn says that he can't wait to use the cog-like visual of the background itself as a loading screen of sorts, with the cogs moving as the emulator starts loading. Very neat idea to tie everything all in.

A few words from StrmnNrmn himself:

Trying to select a winner has forced me to think about what I wanted to get out of this competition. On the surface, the main goal of the competition was just to replace the ugly default icon on the PSP's XMB.

However as I've checked out all the entries over the past couple of weeks, I've come to realise that the main objective of the competition should be to define an identity for Daedalus.

Congratulations to Paul Ahmann and to all those who participated in the event as well. You certainly made it hard for the guy to pick out a winner - we can't even begin to think about how hard it was for StrmnNrmn to choose, as even we had trouble coming up with a definite first placer. In any case, here's to more updates about Daedalus!

meh, I still think mine was the "cleverest". I was going to suggest using WingCap mario as the logo (since it incorporates the word Daedalus (you know, from Daedalus and Icarus, the myth where the two guys wear wings to fly) and also has a nintendo 64 "icon" at the same time). But yeah, I guess my idea wasn't accepted because it was simplistic. That, and because I was too lazy to actually submit it ;p

BTW, is this Ahmann the same Ahmann who programs stuff? Um... If I'm not mistaken, Ahmann made IRShell or something like that? Or am I just making up stuff? It's way past midnight right now, so I'm probably hallucinating stuff :P

Lol, I'm even starting to imagine that my GameBoy Advance SP has sprouted another screen! Oh wait, that's just my DS :P

It just doesn't look right for such a great emulator. It's all wackish and weird looking but good, I guess.
Since I wasn't even in the top 10, I'd like to show my icon and background. I wonder if my should have been in the top 10. You tell me. here it is..

i realize that its one of the hardest things possible on the psp, and im not tryng to put down the coder

but why the heck is everyone saying its such an "AWESOME" emulator when it can't play any games!!

dude if you want to knock it then you go and develop a working 64 emu for the psp and make it better in less than 14 revisions using your own code and making it from SCRATCH then i will have nothing to say but gj but till then im going to tell you to stfu

 » WTF

why he chose that one ??? it has nothing to do with n64 ?? no N no mario ???? maybe the worst choice ever !

 » Screwed up

He chose the one I thought was the least attractive. The one with blue was so nice. The reason he wanted this one was for the animation potential which is a lame a#& reason to select this one. It is too busy on the eyes and does not have a branding potential.
