Exactly one year ago today, former Virginia Tech student Seung-huo Cho shot dozens of fellow students and school staff members before turning his guns on himself. Since then, other shootings have taken place in various schools around the country. While some people prefer to pin the blame on violent video games for the killings, gun control advocate Paul Helmke has another target in mind: the relative ease with which people may acquire guns in the US. As Helmke put it: It tears me apart. It's become such a common occurrence and I keep asking why we allow this to happen. I'm not sure that psychological factors or violent movies and video games are any different here than in other countries - the difference is how easy it is to get a gun. Granted, the state had already passed legislation regarding gun control last December. Nevertheless, other incidents have occurred since then, prompting Helmke to speak up. He cited the example of Britain, whose strict gun control laws seemed to have eliminated serious shootings altogether. On the other hand, pro-gun lobbyists are pushing for having sane, upstanding and law-abiding people carry concealed guns on campus. That way, these same people can gun killers down before history manages to repeat itself yet again. We only want to know one thing: will the blame game ever end? |

Bowling for Columbine brings up some good points.
And yeah, all these "Video Game" shootings appear to happen in the US, yet Video Games are released worldwide, yes thats true, Games are released outside the US!!!!

There was one in Finland, not to long ago... did we already forget this?
Bowling for Columbine brings up no points at all. Taking away guns doesn't solve gun crime, because then the only people with guns are CRIMINALS (and the police).

There's a lot of people with guns other than criminals or the police. Most people who do random shootings have no criminal record. Just one psycho has to get access to a gun, and it's incredibly easy.
It's funny how easy gun access is never even thought of as a cause most of the time.

I said that if you take away guns, then only criminals and cops have them.
That's the issue here. Making a no-gun zone doesn't stop gun crime.

» Sure,
It is easy to get guns. Maybe too easy. But we should never get rid of guns completely. Most of the shootings were thought out and planned. They didnt just snap and happen to own a gun. A lot of the shooters went out just for the purpose of the shooting. Even if you make guns illegal they will be in country. Weed is illegal and probally everyone in my school has access to it if they wanted any. So they would find a way to get a gun anyway. By allowing civilians to own guns, you increase the chance that someone will be able to take out a shooter when a officer isn't readily available. Imagine if we issued everyone a gun. What they do with it is up to them. Keep it, sell it, throw it away, whatever. Criminals would have in their mind that everyone might have a gun. So crime would deffinately go down. You don't hear of shootings in huge gun conventions. And do you know why? Because even the criminals that came to purchase guns know that if they shoot someone, there will be guns aimed at them from every angle. Also we can't make guns illegal because of our constitutional rights. We have a right to own guns in case our government gets out of hand and we need to overthrow it to put it back into check.

i think your missing some points. The deterence angle your working from has been proven to actually increase crime rates because of the repression it adds on already fragile communities. The death penalty has had negative effects on murder rates (look at homocide rates in jacksonville, FL for instance over the past 10 years).
This is just one of the problems our country will always have because of how our government is set up. Do you want freedom and potential danger? Or would you prefer very little freedom and better government prevention of these incidents? I for one seek freedom.

Actually, I think you are missing some points. I understand what you're saying, but the death penalty has nothing to do with this issue.
The issue at hand is gun control restrictions. The token example of how completely banning guns will increase crime rates is Washington D.C. It is the most crime ridden part of the country because guns are banned within the city limits.
I am glad that you agree we should have our freedom, though.

XEnigmaX wrote "It is the most crime ridden part of the country because guns are banned within the city limits".
i don't believe that's really the case. the gun ban was introduced because crime rates were terrible and getting out of control. it was already crime ridden before the ban, so all you can really say about the gun ban is that it didn't have the desired effect. in otherwords, it didn't cause crime to rise, it only failed to prevent it from rising. :|
for such a ban to be effective, it needs to be across the whole country, not just specific states or counties. this is the case with countries like britain, where although gun crime is rising, it's still a drop in the ocean compared to the US thanks to guns being illegal throughout the whole country. :|
back on topic, i do agree with this report. it's not the fault of videos games, since these crimes happen due to the ease of which certain individuals can get hold of guns, and would happen even if video games never existed.

im sorry but by allowing civilians guns you allow planned out shootings to occur without a gun in his hand a shooter is unable to pull the trigger. while appreciate some people will still get hands on guns here in the uk i know lots of people who can get there hands on weed however if asked someone for a semi automatic machinegun i wouldnt have quite as much luck

It is not the guns or the games. It is the person using the gun that should be to blame. A gun is useless without the user.

It's neither guns nor video games. It's the inherent uncorrected psychotic behavior. Solve that problem, and there wouldn't be a NEED for guns.

» So more guns?
Yeah lets give more people guns to "protect" the other people in the schools, that'll work. I mean how wouldn't a gunfight in a school be a good thing? No one would be dumb enough to shoot a student through a wall or door by accident, right?

» Neither are to blame for school shootings
How about everyone stops trying to blame someone other than themselves for all the messed up things in this world? More and more, people continually pass the buck and refuse to pin any blame on themselves. That's why society as a whole is going down the drain.
If anyone's to blame for school shootings, it's faulty parenting. Learn to control your kids and stop thinking they're these innocent perfect little angels, because they're not. In fact, chances are, your kid is a little sh*t who needs an ass beating.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!
Yes, this comment is meant to be humorous (...somewhat):
Parents have no choice but to blame others. After all, you can't really "parent" your kids anymore. I'm 32 and when I was young had I even THOUGHT about touching my dads guns....HOLY CRAP I would have had a beating coming to me. Also, I would have lost "trust" with him which was WORSE then the beating.
Spoiled rotten, don't give a sh1t kids are the biggest problem. Add the fact that you can't spank your kids without fear of abuse and you have a situation that gets worse by the generation.
The number of kids who tell their parents NO keeps getting higher and higher with every passing year. The level of respect is in such a massive decline I doubt any form of policy will ever fix it. The ban of NO SPANKING being lifted sure as sh1t would help.
Kids these days have nothing to fear. It's normal human nature to be a little bad. Granted, it's not a given but it is normal. We're kept in line through fear. Fear of prosecution, jail, punishment....death penalty. For the most part decent morals but who's to say decent morals are passed on? What do kids have to fear? Nothing. No jail, no punishment. Ground them and they run away, then what? The police just bring them right back for them to run away again. What's the point? The government forces it's people to keep their kids but then they dictate what you can and can not do? I sure as in hell didn't vote for no spankings! Anyone here? What group of liberal pansies voted for that crap?
My kids are too young right now, but when the diapers come off, spankings will get dealt as they're needed. Send me to jail, at least I wont be responsible for a shooter.

that would mean government regulation of the distribution and selling of bullets. How many people already own guns illegally? How easy is it to buy cocaine? If bullets cost 5000 dollars at the store people would just buy it on the street and/or smuggle it in from other countries for cheaper.

It's funny how middle class drones can so expertly narrow all these problems down to one thing! A gun is a tool nothing more. I could take out a s**tload of people with a hammer, or a butter knife, they are tools as well...The comments about no weapons in the crime infested capitol is funny to me...That's where our "leaders" are... The biggest of all criminals...they murder to "liberate" I'm wasting my time typing this because most of you people are just to ignorant to see the truth. thanks to the patriot act, we as americans have ZERO freedoms or rights any longer. we are in a new world order and the US gov. is in charge of everyone worldwide, back to another earlier comment about "we should have guns to keep our gov. in check" - GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! there is no way we or anyone could ever reclaim our US of A. All transmissions made are recorded and kept permenantly in databases. If you as a citizen can free public access to google maps to view the entire world on 30 year old satellites WTF do you think our gov has now? two cans and a string? i would not be a bit suprised if, as i'm typing this there are people other than myself reading it before i even submit it, we can get keyloggers, what makes you think all of us don't already have them preinstalled on our pc's - it probably comes with windows;) call me paranoid, i think i'm a realist, i'm just not doing anything bad enough to deserve their attention...everything you say is retained by someone somewhere - hopefully your not giving them anything interesting....
you should not be paranoid unless you have something to be paranoid about.
BTW why is weed illegal? oh yeah, it's ok to get drunk and run over children whilst beating the sh*t out of your wife,. right? Legalize everything and the dumb sh*ts will just kill themselves off...no we couldn't do that cause then 90% of the prison population would have to be released and 80% of the law enforcement in this country would be out of work...
Money and greed should be banned.. that is the real root of most problems..
that, and as someone stated earlier the evils of basic human nature ---conflict is entertaining---
Peace and love are the only answer here.

and since i'm hopping all over every subject i think i'll piss in someone else's cheerios by letting you know that CHEVY is Sh*t, predesigned obsolescence. wish i could take a gun after all of that road trash Shi.......

go into a crowded room and kill 20 people with a hammer or butter knife.
i bet ya any money someone stops you before you get to 2 maybe 3.
you dont have to be standing next to the person with a gun and thats the issue, if you wanted you just stand back and spray the room.
its a tool yes, a tool designed to kill and theres no other purpose.
i believe no one should have to right to own something thats only purpose is to end life.

your right, its ALL politics and to get people to vote one way or another. However, i do think this political game is beneficial to the people as well. Who wouldnt want to drive a car that costs WAY less to fuel? Our planet goes through cooling and warming phases, some result in an ice age and others go the other way. Its as natural as the fact of waves created by the moon.

That sounds like you know nothing about the topic. Your weight and tolerance is also a factor. Since isoretard is most likely a fat ass (a large Nintendo T shirt won't fit him) he can drink a few without feeling it. I am not a drinker, so even one drink can leave me impaired somewhat. I can smoke a fat blunt and have no issues driving whatsoever. The only problem is if I have to find a place I've never been to, lol.
I once heard the very true saying:
A drunk runs a stop sign while a stoner waits for it to turn green.

"I see no facts, just propoganda"
That's because your an idiot that can't read. I posted the FACTS. Go back and read.
"That sounds like you know nothing about the topic"
Really? Seeing as how the DMV disagrees with you I think I'll stick with the DMV. Something tells me they know a little more on the subject then some dumb kid like yourself.
"Your weight and tolerance is also a factor."
Gees your dumb. The website covers all that. Seriously, what's your problem?
"Since isoretard is most likely a fat ass (a large Nintendo T shirt won't fit him) he can drink a few without feeling it. I am not a drinker, so even one drink can leave me impaired somewhat."
What's your point? Besides null as usual. Because YOU can't have so much as one beer then NO ONE else should? Since weight has nothing to do with pot your just spinning wheels for no good reason. If you think getting high doesn't impair you then you are nothing but a typical pothead defending his BS.
"I can smoke a fat blunt and have no issues driving whatsoever."
1. I have no doubt in my mind that you're a pothead. That would certainly explain a LOT.
2. Having just one is completely besides the point.
3. As usual, NOTHING you've said negates anything in my previous comment.
"A drunk runs a stop sign while a stoner waits for it to turn green."
Only you would hold on to such BS. Impaired is impaired. It doesn't matter WHAT impaired you. Stoners DO go through stop signs.

That's a pretty good side step. However, going back to the originating comment, a butter knife is a poor argument for gun control. BTW, I do not watch too much TV. Thanks for proving your ability to give unsubstantiated information.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, we have a winner here! You must be a pothead like Mr. Nonsense.
"---is it? tell me what our country can't do if "IT" wanted to?"
Are you serious? Do you want just one? Shutdown piratebay (this one is good because America wants to!). You want another? Break down the cabinet of ministers in Sweden and tell everyone they will adopt our constitution. Want another one? Knock on every Chinese persons door, hold out our hand and wait for the immediate and full payment of every piece of software in that household......I could go on all night. The US is NOT in charge of everyone in the world. Such talk is borderline psychotic.
"you like to tell people what you think huh? do you have a job or is this it?"
Um...I don't know if you noticed this or not, but this is a PUBLIC FORUM. Are you serious? Or do you just feel stupid now and have to come up with "something"? Either way, what I wrote is not only what I think, it's proven. Go check the facts yourself. Start with the one I gave you. Just like your bogus butter knife argument, ANYTHING can be abused. There is no valid reason to ban liquor. However, you don't have to abuse pot to get high.
"i smoke two joints in the morning, i smoke two joints at night..."
Wow! I swear I'm responding as I'm reading.... Did I call it or what!?!?!?!?! Thanks for proving my point. Your paranoid schizophrenia is obvious and now we have a cause.
However, this topic is not about pot. Leave it to Mr. Nonsense to even bring it up. If you want to talk about the long term mental effects of pot then find me outside this domain. Or research it yourself. BTW, you replying and stating there are no mental effects will not work.
