Phil Harrison - Image 1Only a few days after he expressed discontent with Sony Japan, Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS), has announced that he will step down from Sony Computer Entertainment Group on February 29, 2008.

To replace him in the position is Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO of SCEI. Says Harrison on his resignation,

The past 15 years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far. I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship.

It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can.

Word is abuzz, though, that Harrison will instead be joining former EA executive David Gardner in heading Atari. There is still no confirmation on this matter as of press time.

Harrison is known for his high profile projects with SCEI such as the EyeToy, SingStar, and the up and coming PlayStation Home. Hirai, meanwhile, has this to say about Harrison's departure:

As one of the founding members of SCE, Phil played a key role in the development and growth of the PlayStation business and our industry.

It is sad to see him departing from SCE, but I wish to express my gratitude for his many invaluable contributions and also wish Phil the very best of luck in his future endeavors.

Phil Harrison sure has contributed a whole lot to the gaming community. And while his resignation from Sony - whose name has been greatly affiliated with his - is surely a loss for the company, at least he isn't totally leaving the community - if the word be true that he's going to Atari instead.

That sucks... and Atari? THats like leaving a 5 star resturant for mcD's :P

   Re: spicyhamster - 2008-02-25
 » there's probably a reason for it

maybe atari's releasing something super amazing that will destroy all three consoles? hopefully not for a while, because i am thoroughly enjoying my ps3.

as for his leaving, that's really disappointing, i always liked his keynotes the best. he always used ridiculous adjectives that if taken literally could not possibly be any fun. "...in EYE-BLISTERING 1080p..." lol. good man. will be missed. hopefully he'll still be active in the gaming community.

i like Phil... he's undoubtedly an asset for the Playstation brand.

Good Luck.

TO be honest I disliked him when he promised amazing Visuals in motor storm and didn't deliver.. But He did Bridge the gap between the US and Japanese Markets. Who ever takes over will have a lot of work to catch up on and even more to take over.

Good Luck Phil.. Maybe he'll work for Big M(icrosoft) in the near future?

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-02-25
 » lol

so your saying Motorstorm dosnt have "amazing Visuals"?
Every time I play it (even on a standard def TV) it looks crazy. But I dont think he'll work for microsoft in the future (at least not in a posistion like he was with Sony).

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2008-02-25
 » .

He made a big deal about Motorstorm running at 60fps and 1080p when it was actually 720p and only 30fps.

I could care less about the guy.

who gives two s*its what a xbox ***** boy has to say about a sony product. Granted you say you own one, which i highly doubt, i havent seen one positive comment by you indicating you have any support for the system. Someone who speaks so eloquently yet quit negative about the product, youd think would have enough "Common Sense" to preview the product before buying a 600 dollar item. Nuff said

Despite what he promised, you have to admit that graphics wise motorstorm is still impressive.

Anyways, I have faith in Kaz Hirai, he seems to be the least-hated of all the Sony Execs.

   Re: ONESTEP - 2008-02-25
 » agreeing

I AGREE WITH MR TOASTY AS I HAVE NOT
SEEN , regardless of undocumented proof, and non fan boy documentation that unprecidented graphics were presented in unparralelled resolution for its time. Please try to argue GOW had it beat, cause over excessive shadows and shading certainly
made the FPS beautiful,it doesnt or can not compare to anytyhing remotely considered for game of the year,
but i will argue to extent to make it next gen fa**gboys that ps3 overexceeds the standards set forth by MicroShi*t
as i own all NextGen Systems so none of you whiny Bastards should have a say in the tech
nology unless you can subject yourself to a rigourous first person opinion that i can present. I myself own all nextgen systems and from here i rank it PS3, 360, Wii.

 » Finally!

Don't really care if he quit or not. He always made false promises (like the release date in HOME for example). Looks like the new guy will have no problem picking up the pieces though. I'm just glad he's gone finally.

   Re: B - 2008-02-25
 » RE:Finally!

C'mon, if you hated every person that announced one date and then got delayed, you would hate every frontman of every game studio ever. MGS4 was supposed to be released Winter 2007, but I dont see you bashing them. It was totally out of his hands. Just be happy that they're trying their best to make the best product for you(and for free might I add...)

» Phil Harrison Is A Nice Guy

Kaz Harai for some reason or another don't help spark my interest in the Playstation brand like Phil does when he talks about it. For some reason Kaz seems disconnected from what Playstation is really about, at least that is how it seems to me. I will miss Phil Harrison. If the Atari rumors are true, I hope he is very successful with them and helps them in a big way to bring us outstanding products.

Awww man....
That's really sad...

He's was the only one from SCEI who was really into the community. I mean, this guy invented Singstar, Eyetoy AND Home. He is the guy who made the Playstation 2 so successful in Europe. Now that he's gone, It looks pretty dark for innovation from Sony. Maybe I'm a little bit too pessimistic here, though.

But one thing is for sure:

We will miss him...

   Re: spicyhamster - 2008-02-25

he didnt "invent" all of those things, he just revealed them. I'll still miss him though. +(

 » Good

to be honest. Ken Kutaragi ruined the PlayStation brand by packing a ridiculous amount of pointlessness into the PS3... After leaving, Phil and Kaz were left trying to put it back together.

I'm reckoning he's just a bit sick of all this now.

 » pointlessness what????

" to be honest. Ken Kutaragi ruined the PlayStation brand by packing a ridiculous amount of pointlessness into the PS3... After leaving"

like what, the Blu-Ray i don't think so. PS3 is an all-one console that can is stand time.

you know how these morons are... anything that makes the PS3 better than the 360 they like to call pointless.

He is a nice well known person who helped the PS3 in its tough times as well as help the other 3 PS systems.

I wish him the best of luck in the future, i liked him alot.

 » Atari?

Man Atari's just about driven out of the gaming industry due to poor sales why would he join such a fledgling company? I would understand if he left to take up a big role in EA, Activision, or Ubisoft.... but Atari? I don't get it. Unless he has REALLY big plans for the company I don't see what he plans to accomplish there.
