Phil Harrison - Image 1In SCEE's press conference in Leipzig, new services for the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable were announced: the Go!Video Download Service which will allow users to watch videos on their PSP and the PS3 will receive PlayTV, which would allow users to record TV programs. However, a follow up announcement from SCEA reveals that neither will be available in the U.S. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Executive VP Phil Harrison explains why.

Harrison explains that the services aren't available because the tech that makes the services possible for other areas aren't available in the U.S. yet. Terrestrial Television, which makes it possible for Japan's 1seg tuner to pick up TV signals on the PSP, is currently only available in San Diego which isn't enough for Sony to make a nationwide effort. This scratches off PlayTV for the PS3 in the U.S.

As for the Go!Video download service, there's no nationwide service in the U.S. that supports video downloads by subscription so there's no vehicle of delivery for Sony to offer the download service. PSP owners will have to stick with UMD movies while they wait for the service to become possible.

Although these aren't available for now though, Harrison explains that once the tech that supports the services are available in the U.S., Sony will be on it. As SCEA commented in its announcement: "We understand and respect the consumer interest in this type of service, and we will continue to explore downloadable content options for our territory."

i was hoping for the Tivo think to come to north america! i dont see why it would only be for Europe?

Re: mr toasty (Unregistered) - 2007-08-23
 » yeah

Why can't they just release a tuner for PS3 capable of tuning standard television OR digital tv for those who have it already.

I'd love to only have to pay 20-50 bucks for this adapter instead of 500 dollars on a box+hard drive.

they cant because U.S technologies and FAA policies dont allow them to. I mean they would if they could since they have the firmware ready, problem is they can't/

Sounds just like the problem with fiber optics. I hope this doesn't end up going down the same path.

why we can't record TV programs.. thats all I want... just like TIVO that is in the US... just make a plup where I can connect the cable... just like TV cards of laptops... anyway.. all I have to do is wait and see... they never do nothing for the US... a big market... thats why I'm starting to love the 360... US first all the way

This is soo gay, why can they just make an attachment for the ps3 so you can plug in your cable line and watch and record tv through the ps3? An why dont we have the GPS and The Go!Cam in the us? I guess us America is mapped out yet. And i guess photography isn't yet supported in USA.

 » camera? pfft

Who cares about the camera, anyway?
It's only 1.3mp, the same as my phone. if i need a 1.3mp picture, i'll use my phone, which i carry at all times anyway.
Or if i wanna go 7mp, i can use MY CAMERA

   Re: ... (Unregistered) - 2007-08-22

The Go!Cam would also be used for Go!Messenger for video chat. I don't think Sony would let that opportunity for making more money (by selling accessories) go to waste.

   Re: puertorro (Unregistered) - 2007-08-22
 » you right...

we don't need the camera really.. just a 1.3 megapixel is silly... but the gps yes please... and by the way.. like the Boricua said... isn't just a software and the plug to make the TIVO like thing... just the recorder... we don't need the air signal for nothing right? just tell me if I'm wrong... the air signals is for the TV thing like the 1seg... if they do that it will be really bad because is the best add on for the console

» They are right, ...for once

In Japan and Europe the main method of TV transfer is Terrestrial UHF Signals, Digital TV is sent via DVB-T signals and as long as you have a Tuner you can pick up like 30 channels in the UK for free. No point in slating Sony for Americas crappy Aerial system, it is crappy, that's why most of you guys are on Cable or Satellite.

» right no us vod service huh...

so i guess the new netflix service or itunes or any tv channels website dont count as "national" vod service... as for the rest... the us used to be the epicenter of all things tech now its fast becoming the technological hell hole of the planet... i mean have u seen some of the cell phones they have in europe and japan that'll prolly never come out here in the states (or if they do itll be like 3 years from now when their obsolete everywhere else)

 » For Go Video...

If all it entails is downloading videos off the internet (like p-tv did) Then saying america/canada does not have that ability is pretty sad.

Almost everyone has highspeed internet, and anyone with wireless has a wireless modem. It'd just be up to Sony to develop a webpage or application to deliver the videos to the PSP....but it sounds like sony is being cheap (although I can't blame them with their pitly income) and are just allowing the PSP to plug into already established infrastructures that they do not have to maintain.....

Just shut up! We Europeans have to go through this kinda thing all the time!! There is just one small thing restricted from hitting the US and your complaining about how you guys should have it!!? Why should you have it?? Why shouldnt have we had other products (many) that only you had!!?

Your just not used to this at all.....

   Re: Dumb-s-hit (Unregistered) - 2007-08-23
» you really don't get it

Japan and China get everything first, and then it comes the the US (not all the time), and then it goes to you. The Majority of PSP and PS3 owners ARE THE USA. I'M TIRED OF UMD'S AND THEIR GLITCHING ON EVERY GAME. THEY WANT US TO BUY THE LOCATION FREE PLAYER.

you do realise the ps3 has sold around the same amount of units that the 360 did in the same time frame right?

 » stop your moaning

americans say they are hard done by. look at us from the uk. our internet has crappy upstream speeds so we cnt play the darkness online without lag. our games com out later some have no release date untill well after the same game has been out for ages in america. the ps3 console arrived in the uk in the end but was late by half a year. not only that but we pay double what you pay and we get less less being the emotion engine so dont tell me you have it bad we get crapped on all the time by ALL games movie and music releases. theres nothing special about freeview (tivo as you know it) here in the uk its a standard you we all have to have to watch programming out aerials dont work coz they switched them all to digital. as for the video on demand i dont know y you cnt have that it seems a bit mean but dont go complaining wen you do get it, itll be alot cheaper than over here

Who buy's UMD's anymore? Who releases on UMD movies and music? Where is our camera? Thanks, we brought the MOST PS3's and PSP's on this earth, and we get UMD's. No wonder the people in the US have their PSP for piracy, emulators, and homebrew. And anyways, where's the PSP keyboard? Europe and UK, have fun with your bundles which you can get for half the price here, and throw in the 2 games and extra controller, $150. Grand Total- $650
