PicoDrive for the PSP - Image 1

Sony PlayStation Portable homebrew developer notaz recently blessed the scene with his port of PicoDrive, an emulator for both Sega Genesis/Megadrive and Sega CD/Mega CD. However, it seems that there's quite the serious bug with the first version, as the emulator itself prevents you from loading any ROMs that you may want to load after testing the bios. Ouch.

Prompt to respond, however, notaz immediately rolled out a new version that irons out this specific quirk out of the equation. And this time, it comes in two flavors: one for custom firmwares and the other for FW 1.5. Convenient!

Here's a look at the changelog:

1.35a
  • PSP: fixed a bug which prevented to load any ROMs after testing the BIOS.
  • PSP: fixed incorrect CZ80 memory map setup, which caused Z80 crashes and graphics corruption in EU Mega CD model1 BIOS menus.
  • PSP: added additional "set to 4:3 scaled" display option for convenience.
  • Added an option to disable frame limitter [sic] (works only with non-auto frameskip).
Thanks to Darknight88 for the tip!

This emulators creator has been making great progress. First, he makes an incredibly efficient emulator with great speed and compatibility. And now within a few days he comes out with an update. Bravo, Notaz.

I still haven't had a chance to test this out, but from what I hear, this is the "best emulator for genesis for PSP out, ever". I'll be replacing dgen soon (sorry to the creator of dgen. You've made a great emulator, but looks like you've been "upgraded" ;p).

Anyhow, as a little joke, why don't you check out this website: dgen.justgotowned.com

Reply with a LOL if you liked that.

» Nothing short of AMAZING! 3 ideas for a future version.

No disrespect to D-Gen. It has been on my PSP since day 1 and I played it on many occasions. After extensive testing with PicoDrive I have decided to hit the DELETE key on good old D-Gen...

Anyway, PicoDrive has many improvements over D-Gen. The sound is great. The most amazing thing is that I can run nearly every game at 200Mhz! That's not with dumbed down settings either. I run the games with 0 (ZERO) Framskip, 44.1KHz sound too. You can switch between Accurate and Fast renderer. There is not a huge difference in most games. If you notice any gfx glitching then switch to ACCURATE. Switching to this in Sonic 1 even gives you a perfect title screen. Something SEGA couldn't even get right in many of their collections. :P D-gen does have the better save state menu with pics, but I'm sure that could be integrated into PicoDrive. I also noticed that when I put the PSP into sleep mode and turn it back on it goes to the XMB. Not a big deal, but would be nice if this could be fixed.

My 3 ideas for improvement would be this:
------------------------------------------------------
1. Please add Rewind/Fast Forward support. This has been done with great success in NesterJ, Rin, SMSPlus. Maybe DaveX can help :). I think it's much easier to rewind a bit than to save the state and restore over and over again.

2. Ad-hoc wi-fi play.

3. frontend graphical improvements. Something like SnesTYL would be great. I love the little "clicky" sound snestyl makes when cycling through roms :P It sounds so 3D with headphones, but subtle so it's not annoying. Being able to cycle through screen shots when you go through the list would make it look hot.

It really is one of the best homebrew emulators to some out in a very long time. Props to the author and keep up the great work! -not sure if he even reads through this stuff- -Sp00NMan, VideoGameObsession.com

I didn't think I'd ever replace DGEN but this runs any old game I've thrown at it, even Streets of Rage 2 works, speed seems slightly better, can handle 44.1Khz Audio a ***** load better. Great Work.

 » Thank You!

Thank you for continuing your efforts. This is by far one of the most polished emulators to hit the PSP scene in quite some time.

It may not have all the pretty menus and bells n whistles, but as far as functionality/compatability goes this is a what other emulators should strive for. I personally could care less about menus, but they do make emu's more user/noob friendly.

This emu has everything you could want from a great emulator, 10 savestate slots, ability to turn off needless processes, thus greatly improving your FPS.

Please notaz continue your noble efforts, and if possible clean up some other peoples messes with other emulators!!!!(PC-Engine?)HAHA!

Seriously though thank you again, I haven't been this stoked about my PSP in months!

So hurry that I dont have time to read what I write. Anyway, I mean that when use only R or L button to SAVE and LOAD buttons ((save = L+...) same time (load = L+...)) only LOAD function works.

 » Sega CD

Anyone know how to load up the BIOS for the Sega CD? This thing doesn't recognize my BIOS files. Genesis games do play great though.

 » SWEET !!!

Awesome job man ! Not only is Sonic CD playable, but Sonic 3 plays perfectly. Even the Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy Hack works ! Cant wait for future updates ! XD Quick question thou if its not too much trouble. Would it be possible to get MMPR for Sega CD to work ? If not, i completely understand. Best wishes !! :D

 » P.S. To sickofitall

The BIOs should be in the same folder with the eboot (If your running 1.50, inside the PicoDrive folder). Don't know if this helps, but look at the readme that came with the emulator. You may have to name your Bios as stated in the readme.
