PSX2PSP lets you play your old PSX titles to your Sony PSP using a simple interface. With the previous build in mind, veteran homebrew coder KingSquitter decided that no more updates will be done, rather, just minor bug fixes. Version 1.3 brings us support for the conversion of multi-games. More details after the jump.Download: PSX2PSP v1.03 |

Just when we thought that there's enough good news today to fuel a high school musical (*ahem*), we find out that there's more. Team M33 has released its Universal Popsloader alongside its teaser for PSP Slim CFW 3.60.This release is certainly a great one for those who enjoy their PSOne games. The Universal Popsloader is compatible with previous POPS releases. Here are the details from M33's release thread (and the readme file):

The PSP Hacking 101 team is back once again with another episode of their handy-dandy netcast. Unlike episode 22, which talked about the awesomeness that was the 3.03 downgrader, they're now talking about something near and dear to our hearts: PSX games.
They're going to teach you about getting PSX games to run on the PSP using PopStation. Specifically, Pox and Ragable are using AutoPopStation v4. With this handy-dandy tutorial, you'll be playing FFVII with the best of them. Note, however, that during the taping of this, 3.10 came out. If you've been reading up on it, 3.10 has increased support for PAL games, which means you won't need to use conversion software so much. That being said, enjoy the video. Oh, and Ragable kills Mitrovarr in this episode. |

Well 3.10 Oh yeah! (our pet name for OE-A) is out now, and Muratcan found something interesting that wasn't explicitly mentioned on any changelogs. PAL games now work properly on 3.10 OE-A. Muratcan was loading up Tekken 2 on his PSP when he noticed something different about it. He writes, I remember earlier today I played it on 3.03 OE-C and it didn't fit the whole screen, it was a little off. But I just loaded it up now after upgrading to 3.10 OE-A and it fits perfectly. A couple more tests show Tomb Raider 1 and Simpsons Wrestling to be working fine as well. When Sony patched the PSP to 3.10, added support for more games was one of the intended effects in preparation for the PS3 launch in Europe. An unintended effect (or was it?!) was that custom firmware can now also get the same benefits of the patch. While people are testing this out, have a go at it yourself. We'd like to know what games work and which ones still have issues, so don't hesitate to make a note of it on our forums, alright? A running list would benefit the homebrew community greatly as more stuff gets uncovered prior to the PS3's European launch. Discuss: [Forum Information Thread] |

While rumors still remain unanswered as to whether the PS3 will see a next-gen Wipeout addition to the series, at least its ancient ancestor will be making a comeback - for the PSP's PSOne emulator. Gamasutra reports that the Wipeout downloadable PSP-playable will slide into the PlayStation Store, along with the equally futuristic, equally racer, equally PSOne Jet Moto. Coming out when? No word on a date, TBA, we guess. Price stands at US$ 5.99 each. Those two classics will share shelf space with a few other additions to the Store. There's the Blast Factor multiplayer pack for US$ 2.99, not to mention another PSOne classic Rally Cross. Downloadable content for Genji: Days of the Blade in the form of alternate costumes has also been placed on display. And if you're interested in videos, word is that the trailer for the PS2's God of War II will also make its way to the store. |

Steve-O (probably not the one from "Jackass") let us know of a clip he put up on YouTube. If there's one thing Dark_Alex's OE-B can definitely do, it's bring some decidedly dead videogame characters back to life. Duke Nukem is a case in point. You could have raised a puppy from birth to death in the time it's taken for Duke Nukem Forever to see the light of day, and it's still not here. For all intents and purposes, the pretty alien babes he's been trying to save are now old and decrepit, and his guns fire rust instead of bullets. Here's a video showing Steve-O playing the PS1 version of Duke Nukem: Time to Kill on his PSP. The video is kind of spotty due to the use of a camera phone, but there's enough detail to show that it really is the Duke blasting away on your handheld. How can we be sure? He ends up dead as a doorknob at the end of the video, kinda like the rest of the franchise. Update: PSPMeep sent us another tip with a video of him playing Crash Bandicoot#@%!13 |

How do you sum up something like this little bit of news? By putting it as plainly as possible. Dark_Alex is working on 3.02 OE-B, the successor to OE-A, and by all accounts, 3.02 OE-B will be able to play PlayStation 1 games. Not just any old games though, but pretty much any PS1 game you already have.
Yes, dear readers. This would mean that you can bypass the three basic annoyances many of us would have with the PlayStation Store once OE-B is complete: having to own a PS3, waiting for Sony's PS1 releases, and paying for them. If you own, say, Final Fantasy Tactics, this should presumably allow you to play the original game on your PSP instead of waiting for The Lion War to come out. Repeat said reasoning with the games you have that still aren't available on the PlayStation Store, and you can see just how much mileage we can get from our games. Of course, it's still a work in progress, so keep your fingers crossed and cheer Dark_Alex on. Before we go, here's a video of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (European Version) running on the work-in-progress version 3.02 OE-B... at full speed. Merry Christmas, you lucky, lucky people! |

We've already given you a sneak peek of the PSP playing a PS3-downloaded PSOne game - off the Japanese PlayStation Network, with a Japanese-language Tekken 2. You've also seen stills of the American PlayStation Network Store, with English-language PSOne games for the PSP. Let's make it a quick trinity and add this YouTube from cree showing Crash Bandicoot on the PSP.
Complete with pre-startup from the PSP's XMB. cree himself doesn't divulge much details (or audio, for that matter), but there are a few highlights we can pick off the video feed:

Presumably the one big disappointment with Sony's FW 3.0 PSOne emulator is that you need a PS3 to download the game files to begin with, and those aren't exactly a dime a dozen. So, that leaves the stand-alone homebrew PSOne emulators from the scene. Anonymous Coder has just released his PS1P-Alpha 1 PSOne emulator for the PSP. Not to be confused with the almost similarly-named PSX-P (PS1) emulator by Yoshihiro (now v2), but looking forwards to the same functionality. There were rumors that this emulator was to be made to support only a single game. That concept was discarded as the author decided to write a single emulator to support multiple games. You can read a few words from the Anonymous Coder below. The wait is worth it. I'm releasing a version that will run anything. ISO, BIN, Z and ZNX.
The rest you know. scph1001.bin and images in the __SCE__ps1p directory. This version has some compatibility problems which I plan to fix soon, for example the FF7 intro movie doesn't run. You can play the game though, just get past the intro using a standard PC emulator (PCSX, ePSXe, ...) and copy over the memory card file ( mcd001.mcr or mcd002.mcr). Use L+R+ up/down to tweak the CPU timing.
I think L2 and R2 aren't working at the moment too.
--A.C. P.S.: to make things clear. This emulator has nothing to do with PCSX, psx4all or any other emulator already released. The only thing I did was use for the game selection screen, the same font code that psx4all uses--it's from some GP2X demo/app. The app isn't perfect yet, but they're getting there. Something else to add to the list of homebrew PSOne emulators floating around teh interwebs. Reminder from the editor: Please note that even though we support homebrew, we do not condone piracy. Hence, we would like to remind everyone that we welcome all your comments, BUT we would also like to ask everyone to please refrain from asking for or giving links for ISOs and the like. This could lead to the banning of the poster of the comment which contains such material and we really don't want to do that because we love you all, 'kay? Thanks. UPDATE: under the category of "Why didn't you tell us that before?", wraggster returns to DCEmu to drop a few additional tips and tricks from Anonymous Coder. It may be just what you need to get whatever PSOne game you want to run running. Hopefully. Read on:
The CPU thing is adjusting the counters relative speed. Note it has a % at the side. It's like making the PS1 CPU run faster or slower. The right value is at 100% (obviously) but the default is 700% (good for FF7 :P). Lots of games runn better at something lower than 700. It does nothing to the PSP CPU so you can set it as high as you want. But after some point it actually starts to be slower. There's save state, L+R+left to save, L+R+right to load (or the opposite). Analog can be used for controlling (as if it was the d-pad). The BIOS must be called scph1001.bin and be placed in the __SCE__ps1p directory along with the BIN, ISO, IMG, Z or ZNX images. Other BIOSes should work too but rename them to scph1001.bin because the emulator looks for this file specifically. People can use PocketISO (google for it or the FPSEce page) to compress images to Z and ZNX. The ePSXe memory cards must be renamed to mcd001.mcr and mcd002.mcr and placed in the __SCE__ps1p directory. Download: [PS1P-Alpha 1 PSOne emulator for the PSP] |

PSX-P creator">Yoshihiro, as promised, has released the second version of his PS1 emulator, PSX-P. The first release brought a lot of controversy as it "resembled" PacManFan's PSX emulator (beta) that was released previous to the first PSX-P release. Amidst all the previous controversy, Yoshihiro has agreed to release the source of this new version with the release. However, this one is not without its own controversy. An hour before it was supposed to be released (officially), it seems to have been "leaked" and many have downloaded it. However, no one is certain if this was the official version and our current reports show that it is not. However, here at PSPUpdates, we respect all developers, and have patiently waited for the official release. MaGiXeN from PSPGen had the "honor" of hosting the official version, and we just obtained it. The first noticeable change is the increase in speed. The exact increase (percentage-wise) is unknown, but many have reported an increase of several frames over the previous release. This version also includes your basic frameskip option, and has increased compatibility from the initial testing reports. Using the "leaked" version, Darkstone has compiled a video of a PSX game in action (download the emulator below the video) - Note: Upon request, the download will be linked to the site that has released the emulator. Said site requires a forum registration in order to download. Sorry for the inconvenience, but we will abide by their wishes. (When you've reached the site, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page where you will see two Download buttons.) |
