Sony's sent out PlayTV to be judged by reviewers. This particular peripheral intends to "future-proof" the PlayStation 3, essentially by allowing you to play - even pause - live TV through your console. CVG's verdict? It's a cool recording package with its intuitive menus and easy features. But £ 70 (US$ 125 approximately) might just prove to be too much to pay a price for a Freeview box that already comes with most HDTVs. But amidst all those pros and cons, what got our attention most was the fact that Sony did stick after all with their plan of letting PSP owners have the ability to copy DRM-free versions of your recorded programs to your handheld. Not just to the PSP, in fact, but also to any other compatible MPEG-4 device. Apart from that, you can also access PlayTV via PSP through Remote Play, thereby allowing you to watch live TV or stored videos in it. Cool, huh? Now you don't have to worry about missing an episode of your favorite show, even when on the go. The full review of CVG on TVPlay is available via the source link below, so we're sure you'd want to check that out. Related PlayTV articles:

Good news.
I'd love to have a version of this in the States.

» cheap!
Considering every thing that its supposed to do the price is very reasonable.
True most new hdtv come with freeview built in but theyt tend to be only really basic unless you have a stupidly expensive set.
Also this thing seems to some extent seem to do what things like apple tv does and that thing is expensive.
Its a shame that where i live the freeview signal is so rubbish otherwise i would seriously have considered getting one.

I was hoping to connect this up to my Sky receiver, but it seems I'm unable to do this :o(
I get a shed-load of channels through Sky, and a tiny amount through FreeView!
Don't think I'll bother with this either!

3 years ago (three) I bought a £60 USB DVB-T dual tuner for my Mac and it does everything this does and more.
It's much too late to the market considering these DVB-T tuners for PC and Mac are dirt cheap now.
Oh and since this app hasn't got an iTunes licence it won't be able to load onto an iPod. So way to cut out a huge market (75% of mp3 players, isn't it?).
Skip.

First: your Elgato cheap DVB-T has ONE tuner, the PlayTV has two. Price can obviously grow a bit.... compare with the Elgato EyeTV Diversity, roughly the same thing. Prices are similar :P
Second: iTunes license? WHAT? So my anime fansubs I watch all the time on my iPod are licensed? to whom, given that I convert them personally with open source tools? XD come on, they just need a profile to export in the right format, and the iPod is served, too.

You misunderstood.
The PS3 cannot directly output files to the iPod. For this it needs to get an iTunes license from Apple. You can plug the iPod in and press export but it will not show up on the iPod menu - it needs to be transferred through iTunes first (or any other licensed or illegal transfer app).
Nowhere did I say it's impossible to play PlayTV vid files on an iPod, but it seems you jumped the gun.
PS3- Memory card- Mac/PC- iPod. What a longwinded method when the Mac or PC can already do this for much much less.

I see what you mean. However i still have doubts on the whole license thing, after all this stuff is DRM free, and it sounds a bit weird... but i'll have to check it up.

» Nope, no license
Have a look at the ADC site, searching for "iPod license" gives you at best instructions on the license to use iPod's icons and how to make peripherials such as dock connectors. Anyway Sony could just get a license, if it turned out to be necessary... they did it for windows media file formats, why not to write in an iPod? :)

» US is always screwed on the good stuff.
this won't come to the US for a couple of reasons.... 1, the US is just now phasing out analog for digital... 2nd, the US is on a different (incompatible) digital standard.. This box is for DVB-T while the US is on ATSC.

I hate to say it but I bet someone will probably sue Sony over this, either do to the DRM laws or someone that charges for a recording service such as tivo or something. Although I can already record live tv through my computer I think someone won't like how widespread this is becoming.

No, this isn't America. So will the yanks please stop getting this wrong.
You are free to record TV shows in the UK (maybe Europe). This EXACT SAME THING has been going on at least 4 years, it just didn't have a PS3 involved.
Why are Elgato and Cinergy still going? Oh that's right... it's not illegal and DRM is a complete non-issue of the matter.

I'd dare say this has been going on since the VHS / Betamax format war... but anyway simple fact is: in Europe free tv means "most of the stuff", while in the US you get all those cable tv providers, with their proprietary decoders and so on. This isn't the case :)

it is a bit pricey,
i dont care for playing tv on my psp
i dont bring my psp with me anywhere, i just play it in the house
even if i was, it would be difficult finding a wireless acces point where i live
and im sure there is already cheaper technology which wouldnt be as hidious as a large box, that is able to save tv channels to your psp
