Sony PSP - Image 1PSP homebrew coder ector has just come out into the open with a release we're sure the PSP community will take a shine to. It's the source codes for the Potemkin homebrew - an experimental Windows-based open source HLE PSP Emulator. Here are the noted features for this app:

Features: (end-user point of view)

  • Plays Puzzle Bobble Pocket JAP
  • Starts AI Go
  • Runs numerous demos from the PSP SDK
Technical Features:
  • Badly simulated PSP kernel
  • Mounts ISOs and CSOs (no DAX!)
  • Mounts Windows directories (no good UI yet for this)
Now, before you guys get too excited over this release, make sure to remember the following:
  • This is a source code release - Potemkin won't work unless its codes are properly compiled.
  • Expect plenty of bugs - ector reports that only three PSP games work: Pinball, Puzzle Bobble Pocket, and Puyo Puyo. Compatibility for other games is still under works.
  • Homebrew compatibility: There have been reports that Potemkin is currently unable to load .pbp but will run .elf files.
  • Potemkin needs Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 - Install this pack before attempting to run the homebrew. We've provided for a download link below.
  • Source Codes released under the GPL license - This is an invitation for fellow coders to try their luck with this program.
  • Check the README (aka RTFM) - All important author notes should be here
Given that this application's still a rough prototype, we discourage first-time users and non-programmers from trying it out. With that said, we'd like to congratulate ector for this achievement, and hope that a polished version gets released in the near future.

Wierd, tried running Tekken and then the screen filles with sprites from this game i got installed on my pc, the crashes

   Re: V (Unregistered) - 2007-05-06
 » Can you read?

Wierd...posting says only three games work...and Tekken isn't one of them...huh?
Wierd...the release is essentially Alpha...and it crashed...huh?

Hopefully this project will get plenty of lovin from the homebrew community. Sony put a strong arm move on the last (and only) attempt.

 » wierd...

Whoa, that's odd.. the game from where the sprites came... wasn't loaded in memory when you ran the emu, was it? if not, it must've grabbed data from the drive randomly (I hope).

oh, and V... he wasn't complaining that it didn't work, merely an odd effect of trying something that possibly hadn't been tried yet. imagine that... trying something new? if people did that, just imagine what could be discovered... like ..oh, fire.. electricity.. well gee, maybe just everything other than air. and water. hmmmmm

 » A double edged sword

I see this as a duoble edged sword, one that can potentially boost the homebrew communities ability to make and test programs.

The other edge of this sword will cut deeply into the PSP's software sales and can easily cause much damage to the community at larger. This to me is a sign to no longer support homebrew simply because this sort of thing can cause the PSP to continue to decline in software sales. I'm sorry everyone but to me this is a bad thing, really bad.

True. Do you know how many people were planning on buying a PSP just so they can play God of War, or Final Fantasy? (Or some for Silent Hill), now they won't have to buy a PSP, or the game.
I mean if it runs flawlessly by that time.

 » or not

The reason the PSP is popular is because it is a PORTABLE gaming system. Making an emulator for PC's isn't going to harm the PSP because the majority of people who have PSP's use them on the go, not sitting in front of a screen. That's what consoles are for

 » yup u got it

yeah i got a ps3 and a psp because its portable anyway any people here already hack their psp lol

   Re: Korlithiel - 2007-05-06
 » Not entirely true

The PSP is a portable but many of the systems best games aren't very portable, try looking at MHF and tell me that game was made for bursts of play rather then playing for at least a half hour.

Though I agree that very few if any will be persuaded by this any time soon.

   Re: Extinction (Unregistered) - 2007-05-07
 » To Korlithiel:

1) Portable games do not have to be played short bursts. For example, portable gaming is alive due to Pokemon. Without Pokemon, portable gaming would've died with the first gameboy. And Pokemon is not short burst gaming

2) PSPs sleep mode makes EVERY game short burstable.

» That may not be the case.

More or less. The development of this will help out psp programmers testing it out with out the use of a psp.

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

You need to install visual studio 2005 sp1 redistributables. Then you need to compile the source code (require visual studio 2005)
I'm currently trying to compile it. Stay tuned

 » news?

i am very impressed, as i figured the homebrew scene was not going to get a windows emu for a long time, i would like to know though, why did they not try and emulate windows mobile, by taking a way a load of stuff, and changing the codes a bit it may work, though it would take a long time to make one i know, this is my goal as well, i actually tried to start one, but i practactlly gave up after a few days with no luck, i do hope some one gets it right though, it means a very bright future for all homebrewers!

Named after a Guilty Gear character, I presume? I don't like Potemkin himself, but GG is freaking awesome.

   by ultragoregrind - 2007-05-07
 » COOL!

this is really cool! give it some time and well we could be looking at a whole new world of firmware hacking. i mean once this emulator gets into shape, you'll no longer have the risk of bricking with bleeding edge firmware hacking.

who knows, this could lead to exploits being found in later firmwares (especially if it includes a debugger).

 » @kirbyss

Not sure, but I think Potemkin was originally a Russian ship. Might want to wiki this.

Re: Tim Y. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2007-05-07
» Potemkin is both a ship and a GG character

@KirbySS; @not important, but
You're both right, actually.

Potemkin was the name of the big lug from the Guilty Gear franchise, but was also the name of a Russian battleship, which figured in an uprising in 1905. The ship was named after Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin.
