PsX Decrypter

We're not entirely sure about the legality of this so we're not going to host the file. However, we will pass on the news. Dark_AleX's PsxDecrypter, an application that decrypts/decompresses ISOs of the PlayStation Store, has been released.

Those that decry this application say that it is illegal because it breaks Sony's protection. Those that defend it say that it is still legal as it doesn't include Sony's code. Similar to cracking a cellphone, it should be legit as protected files aren't included in the application.

Since we'd like to play it safe, we'll just offer you folks a forum thread at the end of this post so that you can get more details and perhaps even the file, itself. In the end, the decision is up to you.

If you aren't going to host this file, then maybe you shouldn't host any of the firmware decryptors eather. They break Sony's encryption (hence the name "decryptors," duh) and let us do such wonderful things as custom firmwares, devhook emulation, and the universal downgrader. Those are copyrighted Sony files, just like the PSX ISO's. Come to think of it, the psar is also encrypted (although it is very weakly so). Maybe QJ should stop hosting those too.

i read on another forum that they can now use the cd-audio tracks in the psx games, maybe we can play a lot more games soon, games like tekken 3 would be compatible with this...
i'm sure dark_alex is working on this as you read this...

   Re: Kichigai - 2007-01-06
 » Uhh, no.

I think you have it backwards. This DECRYPTS files bought from the PlayStation Store, it has nothing to do with the emulator, directly. It doesn't create anything the PSP can use.

 » very misleading description..

"decrypts/decompresses ISOs of the PlayStation Store"

..right..why not copy the readme so it makes sense:

it "decrypts/decompresses psx games bought at the ps3store"

ok.. the app itself seems quite pointless.. the only way to use that would be to emulate it on computer or burn it for a real psx, altough the info that DAX must have gathered to make this should mean that the next version of popstation could have support for the compression that sony uses (and make the eboots smaller)

Do you even read the site you're posting on ?

The last version of popstation does have support for compression

Kas -
Maybe you should read his post again, and then look back at how dumb your smug reply was.

"the next version of popstation could have support for the compression that sony uses"

If you knew what you where talking about, you'd know that the last version of popstation does NOT use SONY's compression but rather a completely different and less effective compression.

   Re: Jin (Unregistered) - 2007-01-06
 » Even so...

A very impressive compression indeed. I love seeing a 700MB ISO drop to 400.

Broken record reply; way to go Dark_Alex.

And does it upload the cracked software to a torrent for you as well?

I don't see this as a gray area at all... in fact Dark Alex is * supporting * Sony with this program. Before the choice was either download ISOs without paying for them, or take a totally screwed up firmware (official Sony firmware) just so you can pay for your PS1 games.

This allows everyone to keep their homebrews and pay for PS1 games if that's their choice.

Thumbs up on yet another great release by DAX.

 » eboot to psx iso???

is there any way to convert a popstation created eboot back to the psx iso? that way i could then compress the created iso with popstation for 3.03oe. this app only compresses ps3 store encrypted eboots. I only have downloaded eboot files that i used with 3.02oeb

   by Tim B (Unregistered) - 2007-01-06
 » You guys...

I've seen several posts already about how it's supporting Sony or is the same as firmware decryption... well it's not.

The difference is the DMCA. The DMCA prohibits the creation of "copyright circumvention" devices. Decrypting firmwares doesn't help you break the copyright. Decrypting copyright protection on things they sell DOES.

Hence QJ is correct in being apprehensive about hosting the file.

i wonder why i come to this site at all? DA thinks its full of noobs and he releases everything at maxconsole i think we should all move there and let this stupid site sink into obscurity

Oh well! If 'DA' doesn't come to this party it must be very unfashionable! I would only want to be see in a place where the coding celebrities are. Let's you and I go to this Maxconsole right now and be all 'LEET.

You first.

 » What the hell?

you guys (QJ) post everything on your sites. you post firmware decrypters. the eboots are sony made. so why would this be illegal. as long as it doesnt contain any files made by sony, its not illegal.

   by RaiderX - 2007-01-07
