PspStates Experiment version 2 - Image 1Developer Dark AleX has announced the release of version 2 of his PspStates homebrew plugin for the PSP Slim.

In case you weren't around during our earlier report, this homebrew plugin will enable you to create savestates while playing games on your handheld. As for the changes that are implemented with this new build (quoting the readme):
  • Fixed important bug in inter-thread code (semaphore wasn't waiting due to interrupts disabled), that caused the load state to not be completely read in some cases. This caused black screen after state load (unless you just saved that state, in this case state was still in ram), or even worse, game not working properly due to partial load.
  • Added states per game basis. The controls are slightly different: old controls now do a local savestate/loadstate of the game, while pressing additionally select button will save/load a global state. See instructions for more info.
  • Fixed bug that caused normal sleep mode waking up immediately.
  • UMD discs and isos in normal UMD mode are now supported. However, they require to nullify umdcache, by flashing one file, read the instructions in the readme.
We remind the readers that PspStates is still experimental and may cause data loss or other damage to your PSP. You will want to back up your nand and memory stick data if you're serious about giving this homebrew a try. You will also need a PSP Slim running on custom firmware 4.01 M33.

You will also need a good memory stick as a fake stick will cause extremely slow savestates and loadstates. Lastly, we advise all users to view the file bundle's readme before attempting to run PspStates even if they've read the one for the previous release, as Dark AleX made some revisions to the readme in version 2. Those interested in contacting the author to make bug reports or otherwise will want to visit the source link below.

I can confirm that the second version works well with MX vs ATV. Now maybe I can pass some of these levels that I keep messing up! I was a bit worried when I went through the read me. It made it seem like every time you used the save state that you would be waiting forever. It takes less than 20 seconds for the entire process of saving, and the loading is even faster than that.

Its also obvious as you read through the read me that DAX is not totally sure what the content in the save game is. All he has done is grab a snap shot of the data the PSP stores when it goes into sleep mode, intercepts it, packs it up, then dumps it to the MS. When you call for it to come back he puts the system back to sleep and then dumps the save state back in so the PSP thinks it is just starting you off where you were when it went to sleep in the first place.

Its actually ingenius, and is very effective. I know someone asked why sony did not do this? I think its too much of a "hack" feature to properly implement on OFW. I am sure this is just the first itteration of this. Once a few people see hw DAX has done this they should be able to speed the process up a bit more, and possibly figure out a way to make the PSP "think" it went to sleep, but never actually does. Which would make it more integrated.

It would be nice to have some sort of "browser" for the save states so I could see a small icon of the screen shot from it, and figure out which save state is for which game.

Overall though this is a VERY good effort, and does exactly what you want it to do.

I can confirm it saves and loads nicely with FF7CC. And I am using a fake mem stick.

 » Not gonna flame

OK, I'm not gonna flame you for that comment but I would think you know the answer to that. (I would guess you would error out immediately with a "connection lost" or something similar. Or maybe you'll rip a hole in the space time continuim, travel back in time to the very point you saved the state? You might need to install DAX's timemachine for that to work and you'd be the first to make the PSP an actual time machine. Instead of game save states, you can create life save states!

Sorry, I held back the flame in exchange for the sarcasm.
