Gino D:

Publisher of the Year: Electronic Arts

Comments: Damn. As much as you might hate to admit it, EA owns your soul. They've got a massive share of the market, with relatively high sales all year. Their spammage of multi platform releases might not be to the taste of many a gamer, but you can't deny that they've been raking in the dough.

Isaac C:

Publisher of the Year: Electronic Arts

Comments: I know a lot of you will disagree with me on this, but EA made a lot of significant changes this year that changed my opinion of them. First they took Mirror's Edge and Dead Space, two rather risky titles, a far cry from their "rinse and repeat" formula of yesteryear. Despite poor sales of these games, they decided to take on Brutal Legend anyway, another risky game that's sure to get critics all agog, but might leave sales wanting. I admire EA for taking those first steps away from their heartless, capitalist image.

Mabie A:

Publisher of the Year: Ubisoft

Comments: I name Ubisoft publisher of the year simply because they are the only publisher left this year who can still afford to acquire other companies left and right while everybody else is closing down or laying off people. For what it's worth, that should count for something when talking about management skills, right?

Karl B:

Publisher of the Year: Electronic Arts

Comments: It all boils down to new IPs - Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, and next year's Saboteur, just to name a few. It looks like the money-grubbing and crap-churning EA of the past is history. I just hope the company doesn't start to backslide suddenly.

Glenn M:

Publisher of the Year: Nintendo

Comments: For selling Wii and DS hardware like candy in preschool, Nintendo deserves top marks for hitting a new market right on the money...

Chris C:

Publisher of the Year: Electronic Arts

Comments: Atari comes a close second, but seeing EA do a complete 180 and lead the charge this year with a bunch of new, well made, innovative IP's was a class act. They say a leopard can't change its spots, but the New EA proves that saying's wrong, whatever bug bit EA, let's hope it's infectious.

So guys, what are your thoughts?

» Activision Blizzard should be the Winner

Guitar Hero and WoW: Wrath of the Lich King pawn all EA bull*****.

 » Activision for me

What about Activision they brought us Call of Duty World at War, Crash : Mind over Mutant (for the kids of course), there's guitar hero (+ all its add-ons), there's many more but as a publisher they have provided this year for people from all walks of life whereas EA only remake what they've already done a million times and slap 09 on the end of it.

   Re: AvatarKasier - 2008-12-30
 » Really?

I would have never guessed dead space and mirrors edge to be remakes. But I think they forgot to add the "09" to them this year.

Nobody wants to admit Microsoft Game Studios is the best publisher.

I think the reason it would never be on QJ (and the reason your comment and soon to be mine have low stars) is because most of the people on QJ are Xbox haters and would never admit that MGS does an amazing job with their dev studios. They give more support and work personally with their guys way more than any other publisher I can think of

I'd put EA at a close second this year, they've really turned themselves around in just one year. A bunch of quality, original games were released under EA, and their sports titles, while still rehashes and not worth $60, were actually pretty good. Madden and NHL were great games this year, even the basketball games didn't suck as hard as usual

   Re: martin447 - 2008-12-31
 » ehh. wha?

as far as i know microsoft only PRESENTS the games,, they made nothing... they worked together on N3,,,, and not much else.... and what do you think of N3???

like SONY presents every game on PS3, MS presents everygame on XB,and its rare any of them interfiere with the actually game! (ecept for N3 lol) ninety-nine mights :P

   Re: martin447 - 2008-12-31

"ninety-nine mights" i wrote (oops)
i meant "nights" :P

   Re: Master Chef - 2008-12-31
 » Um, no

Yeah, the games that say Microsoft Games Studios when you start them up? Those are made by dev teams MS owns, nobody else. And all I've ever heard from the teams MS owns is great things. MS works very closely with them to ensure they put out a quality product, while generally letting the dev team have free rein over what they put in the game. Can't say that about most other publishers. Most publishers force devs to make the game the publisher wants made

Even most of the 3rd party devs/publishers have nothing but good things to say about MS when it comes to assistance

i guess you didn't know that ghwt outsold rb2 quite a bit then...

   Re: popmchnex - 2008-12-30
 » @joshisposer

I think he means the entire music game genre. Not just Guitar Hero. And when you think about it, they barely sold well at all this time, so outselling rock band 2 isn't much of an accomplishment. Considering they just packaged the same game with a "patch" pretty much.

@ bradman4 It is apparent that you suck at these games.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-12-30
 » .

Even though GHWT is terrible compared to RB2. They did so much copying from RB2 that they didn't know what they wanted to do themselves.

The music creator was a cool addition but if you just want to make some songs quickly then there's just so much you have to do anyway, it's just tedious. There are a ton of ridiculous things they've done, like the random inclusions of celebs and the unbalanced setlist. The setlist suffers the most since none of the tiers the songs get grouped into even make sense. The format for the World Tour mode is garbage too.

There are many other things but honestly, the only people who will say World Tour is better than RB2 technically are just fanboys. I started with GH1 and Neversoft is really taking the series in the wrong direction. GH should have died when Harmonix left it.

   Re: Metal Jody - 2008-12-30
 » no

I play a real guitar and I don't think GH is terrible. So what there's no friends to play it with, but I'm okay with that. I don't play my guitar with anyone else but me, so yeah...

   Re: Navani - 2008-12-31
 » lol

Rock Band started Guitar Hero.. and I prefer Rock Band and GH II to the newer GHs.. And how is guitar hero for no friends? lol, I think a lot of people who bought RB and the new GH bought them so they could PLAY with friends

   Re: sesa - 2009-01-01
 » @bradman4

I also played real guitar and Guitar Hero was addictive so as to Rock Band.
I respect your opinion that you don't like Guitar Hero but please don't Generalize

 » Nintendo?

Nintendo can eat the fattest part of my a$$. Number of units sold be damned, shame on them for all the damage they have done to my hobby.

   by raggedjimmi - 2008-12-30
 » -

Well really it should go to Nintendo. Whatever you think about the content their pushing out; they're doing it RIGHT. And that's all that matters with publishers... Get people to buy your stuff regardless of the quality. It's that simple and anyone with a marketing brain will probably agree.

My person fave? Atari seem to be doing all the right things at the moment, and Valve have done no wrong.

So the realistic marketing side of me says Nintendo, the player in me says Valve.

   Re: raggedjimmi - 2008-12-30
 » -

Actually what a silly thing to say. Valve only publisher their own and buy out smaller companies to form part of Valve themselves. Haha. So... Atari? I've probably had more fun on their games (and Nintendo's) this year than anyone else.

   Re: ptspyder - 2008-12-30
 » So...

...what exactly is nintendo doing right? I was under the impression that doing something that sets back development and innovation for an entire industry in exchange for a gimmic would be a bad thing.

Besides, I could burn down the louvre, but I guess as long as I am "doing it RIGHT!" then it would be a good thing?
   by ch13696 - 2008-12-30
 » Really now...

Guys, this is publisher of the year. Not games of the year. The publisher made more press than anyone. Layoffs, trying to buyout people, and giving up DRM. But if you want to talk about good games then don't forget Dead Space, Crysis Warhead, and Command & Conquer Red Alert 3.
