ZiNgaBuRgA has just released the latest version of his generic RCO Icon Editor for the PSP - it is now at version 1.10. Given that there have been some noticeably heavy XMB customizing as of late (along with the recent XMB icon packs and tutorials), we're sure the homebrew community will appreciate this bit of good news, especially given that this editor will work with just about any RCO file out there.

Changelog:
  • Fixed a few bugs
  • Other slight changes
  • Support for editing text - note that you can also use _longer_ text than the original!
  • Name change
  • Padding is now disabled as it seems to have no effect any more :)
As for the developer's extra comments:
  • Being experimental, this MAY create corrupt RCOs - ALWAYS keep a backup, and make sure you know how to recover from a brick (ie use recovery mode)
  • I'm too lazy to implement much validation in this release, so it's a bit unstable
  • ONLY use DECRYPTED RCOs (get them from the FW2.50 dump)
  • It seems that it WILL work on 3.10 OE! However, it seems that topmenu_plugin.rco customizations will not work, but changing other RCOs seem to work.
Make sure to view the file README for full changelog and installation details, as RCO editing can be a very sensitive task. Also make sure to check out the QJ.NET Forums to see what else the local crew have to say about this PC-based PSP app. As always, thank ZiNgABuRgA over at his forums for the effort, although we'd like to pose this questions for the guys: Anybody know which anime that babe on the screenshot is from? A reply would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy your download!

my heart lifted at the sight of the first few words, then dropped at the last part. ugh, what other RCO's are there that are even worth changing? WHEN THE HELL WILL CUSTOM XMB ICONS BE POSSIBLE ON 3.10?!!?!?

 » okay

see this is what happened. as you know, to use this program, you need a decrypted 2.50 topmenuplugin.rco right? well, every since the 2.60 came out, sony has built a new compression scheme for the rco files, that makes it so we cant decrypt them, and alast cant change them. Now there not ENCRYPTED as in blocked, they are just compressed in a compression we know nothing about, so cannot decrypt it. so we have been using the 2.50 one for a long time to edit it, but when sony released 3.10, they changed something in that topmenu plugin that wont run the 2.50 one only the 3.10 one. So, this is the question. If we can decrypt it, then you can have custom XMB icons on psp, and i do recommend downgrading ot 3.03 OE-C for now!

Thanks for the program ZiNgaBuRgA. You just enabled me to complete my XMB. I tried looking for updates on every program but never got to change: Certify utility and Online Instruction Manual.

Works great! Program strongly recommanded over RCO Swapper. I checked with the hex editor, and the script is well written. It even creates a smaller file than before.

Here are my screenshots:

 » QJ sorta underplayed this...

In case you didnt realise, this is the big one. This opens almost ANY RCO file. You can use this to mess with coldboot and gameboot text, the busy circle, the battery icon, the volume bar, icon glows, the icons themselves, and now even the icon text.

The icon stuff has been doable with other apps, but the fact that this one now does it all is great. Seriously, this is an amazing piece of software that'll let you tinker with pretty much anything on your xmb.

Shout out to zingaburga for continuing to improve it!
