Ready at Dawn: life after Chains of Olympus, on the PSP, more - Image 1

Now that God of War: Chains of Olympus is out and has made its mark as one of the best games on the PSP, what does Ready at Dawn have planned? Unfortunately for PSP gamers, whatever plans they have right now doesn't involve the handheld.

The creative director, Ru Weerasuriya, remarked that Ready at Dawn studio developed God of War and Daxter for the PSP because they wanted to give the platform two great games, and to "push a platform [they] felt was still untapped."

Now that they've accomplished that goal, the team has shifted their attention towards the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. They're not closed to the PSP of course, but for now, it's just not in the books. He also goes on to talk about the platform more, saying that:

I think that Sony, and other publishers for that matter, should take some chances on the system and allow for some big productions on the platform. More often than not, the PSP is seen as a secondary console with only a few great games developed exclusively for it.

And even if some of the games are exclusive, the execution is not all there and in the end, the player is the one who has to suffer for it. Ultimately, you reap what you sow, and if publishers are not willing to bank big on a platform, then the market is not going to see any expansion.

The PSP has the capacity to be a great platform to develop and be successful on for many teams out there so publishers also need to make some gambles on the types of projects they pick.

Again, whether the PSP, PS3, 360, Wii or DS, the systems will only be as successful as the games that are made for them and right now, not enough good stuff is available out there for some of the platforms.

So true...
Again I take the examples Assassins Creed and CoD. What could be achieved if these titles would come to the PSP instead on the DS...

The PSP is a great portable system. The install base of the PSP is getting huge but many developers rush products out for it without the great gaming experiences. I wonder if once the PS3 God Of War is released, we will see spin off sequel come to the PSP. Lets hope. Who knows, maybe by that time it might be for the PSP2! I know I would buy it, knowing the quality Sony has given us so far.

I love the PSP. It's an awesome system with tons of potential, yet so few devs choose to develop any original games exclusively for it. It's an extreme shame when most of the games are just mini-games and ports of other well-known titles.

The PSP has support for Headsets, online play, etc., yet so few games actually take advantage of that feature. The only ones I know that even use the headset are the Socom games, the Syphon Filters, and Killzone: Liberation. Wehn you look at games like Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, Killzone: Liberation, Silent Hill: Origins, and GOW: Chains of Olympus, you obviously know the PSP could have and should have had many more original titles like this.

I mainly use my PSP as an mp3 player now, even though I already have an mp3 player, but it's just sad how there's hardly any new, good games out. I also forgot to mention Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII as another great exclusive.

there are alot of good japanese games. the US is just too stupid to not translate EVEN ONLY THE TEXTS, AND NOT THE VOICES. if only i could understand japanese, the psp experience would be awesome. even europe region wants tohave more games for the psp. and yeah, the lazy porting style is just ridiculous. and please, please! stop the movie-based games! please!

» but what i really want for the psp

is an mmorpg. hands down. if a company thought of this idea, it will be awesome as hell. like playing ragnarok on the psp, although we all know that only pc's have the best control over such games (along with FPS like counter-strike or crysis, sorry, i dont believe ps3 or xbox 360 ca nbeat the mouse/keyboard cobination on First-person shooter games), still, an mmorpg would be a hit, since the psp has wi-fi capabilities (whiel ds only has it for ad-hoc, although the new ds this year, i dont know if it will have one).

 » DS vs PSP?

Well this one here is for Mister Complain and whine:

When the PSP and DS were first coming out we were all excited by the DS's innovation and the PSP's raw processing power. People generally argued the PSP was going to "win" because it had better technical components. It did not, however.

As a long-time PSP owner, I am very disappointed in the lack of good games. I'm very disappointed in the fact that my DS has more games AND better games. When I bought my PSP I didn't expect crappy games and a scarce variety of good games. I thought it would be just as popular as the PS2, with a lot of good games. I was half right. There are many PSP owners, yet how many GOOD games are there?

I almost regret ever having bought the PSP. It does what my iPod does, yet it makes a bigger lump in my pocket. Not the good kind, either. It does what my DS does, yet ever more rarely. It also does what my portable DVD player does, except its movie support is disappearing... So I can't help but ask myself, why do I own a PSP?

Now I don't hate the PSP, only Sony. Apparently the PS3 is more important than the PSP to Sony. The good games that now come out barely once a month do NOT make up for the lack of games on the PSP. Frankly, I'd rather play DS games most of the time than pop in a PSP game. I don't need internet on the go-I have an iPod touch that does that AND plays music... the PSP is just a waste of space usually for me.

It's been more than two years since I've compared the two. But I think I've said enough, what do you think? Don't know about you, but I think the "winner" is pretty obvious by now. My only regret is having shelled out 250$ for something that wasn't supported. I pitied the GC, but I can't say the same thing about the PSP. Instead, I just... well let's just say it stays in a cabinet and barely comes out. If you think about it, just about everything it does can be done by another thing-like the iPod touch.

Overall, the best way I can summarize my point is that I, like many of you, am bored with my PSP, period. Until some more good games (San Andreas: stories?) come out, my PSP is staying in its cabinet, nice and comfy... Until then I'm sticking with my iPod and DS.
