Red Dragon - first Virtual Boy emulator for the PSP

The developer of PSPTube, SofiyaCat, has just released the world's first ever PlayStation Portable-compatible emulator for Nintendo's Virtual Boy. For our younger readers, the Virtual Boy was released first back in 1995 and is the first portable game console capable of providing 3D graphics.

The emulator, anyway, is called Red Dragon and was loosely based on PC-emulator Reality Boy from coder David Tucker. Aside from various debug options, save states, cheats, and sound emulation, Red Dragon also sports a very high compatibility features. Just take a look at this list:

Since this is just an experimental version, SofiyaCat mentioned that users should take all the necessary precautions before installing red Dragon on their Sony handheld to avoid any problems.

Wow wait... This is scary... I just read an article about Virtual Boy on Wikipedia some days ago and thought "Why aren't there any Virtual Boy emulators for PSP?"

Found it on SofiyaCat's wiki. Readme is of course in Japanese. Source is not provided (I'm not sure the original author requires more than acknowledgement.. uh which I didn't see either ;P) so I don't know exactly how "loosely" it's based off of Reality Boy. I'm most interested in how it performs, but not enough to try it right now so I'll wait for someone else's comments on this.

If you wanted to create the "device" that allowed you to see the game play in 3d, how would one go about it, or is it made to be presented on 2 screens? ( Maybe you can use the ac!d 2 eye viewer. xD

The input options are mapped for a keyboard. Anyone figure out how to change it so you can actually play the games?! This is useless.

The virtual boy is one of my conversation pieces. I keep it in the entry hall of my apt and people come with all sorts of ideas as to what it is when they first see it. The most common question I get is, can it browse the web in 3d? doh.

I love vertial force, warioland, red alarm, the boxing game and the tennis game is actually pretty cool too.

Ty for making this emulator run on the PSP. Now we just need red alarm working.

1. run it on your psp, go to options ans select save options.

2. now on your computer, open the reddragon folder and find a file labled "OPTIONS.DAT"

3. open that in notepad. It will show somthing like this:

4. the last few are the controll settings:

lu - left pad up
ld - left paddown
ll - left pad left
lr - left pad right
ru - right pad up
rd - right pad down
rl - right pad left
rr - right pad right
ba - button A
bb - button B
st - start
sl - select
tl - trigger left
tr - trigger right
bl - battery level

the number out beside the letters is the button code. the problem is, I have no clue what the button codes for the psp are.

If you downloaded red dragon for windows and saved its settings. you can fuigureout what the keyboard key codes are by seting them in the emulator.
