PSP

Roughly five minutes after the PSP hit store shelves whispers began circulating around the net that a redesign was in the cards, these rumors rose to a mild rumbling as gamers began to realise that while the PSP was sexy looking piece of kit, it did have a number of design flaws.

- Only one analog knob (one knob to rule them all): Nintendo figured out back in the 32bit era with the N64 that a single analog stick is inadequate when it comes to articulate control in three dimensions. Intelligent developers like Sony Bend and Zipper Interactive have managed to work around this by mapping functions traditionally allocated to the second analog stick to the PSP's face buttons, with varying degrees of success. A second analog stick would free four buttons up, giving the console greater functionality and making it more suited to fluid control in 3D environments.

- Nub placement: Bad enough that there's only one stick, but did they have to stick it in a position where it'll cause sever thumb crampage? I have no idea what sort of placement would be better, but that's why I'm not a highly paid hardware engineer, this one could use some finxin' boys.

- The UMD Disc format: They look cute as all heck, and people "oooh", and "ahh," when you pop 'em out to show 'em off, but the UMD disc format has caused more bad for the PSP than good. First off is the fact that it's just too darn slow to load, granted this could be improved with a hardware revision that upgrades the drive seek time but it still takes time to start spinning the drive. Speaking of spinning drives, this and the laser needed to read the discs uses up a fair amount of the PSP's already precious battery power that most of us would rather conserve if we had the choice. Lastly, the UMD format has a fixed capacity at 1.8GB, we're already seeing flash memory that more than quadruples its storage capacity and has lower power consumption and faster seek times.

So now we've listed some of the problems that need to be tackled but what's the best option for the job, a redesign or  a full blown successor to the hardware? That's still a tough question, let's have a deeper look shall we?

The Redesign: A redesign could take care of most of the problems if not all of them, and it would probably be cheaper for Sony to manufacture as they'd be able to implement new power saving technology developed since the PSP's launch and possibly shrink die sizes. However, a redesign would mean that a very large percentage of PSP gamers would be left with the original older units, units that have only one analog nub (ruh-roh!) This would effectively split the user base in half, granted it's been done before with the PSOne and its move from the original controller (which had no analog sticks) to the Dual Shock, (which had two) but that was a $40 peripheral, not the entire console.

Releasing a redesign would be akin to asking your entire user base to chuck their current hardware down the poop shoot and plonk down some hard earned dough to get a swanky new PSP - Lite. The reason Nintendo's been so successful with their GBA and DS redesigns is that the basic functionality of the system was carried over. For a PSP redesign to work Sony could conceivably get away with changing the position of the nub, and possibly even nixing the UMD drive, but every console would still have only one nub and that's a problem.

The PSP2: For the record, "PSP2" would be really lame name, but in the absence of something more creative we'll go with it for now. A PSP2 would be Sony's best bet for fixing all the design flaws in the PSP and they could include upgraded hardware components, increased memory, faster processing chips, include a hard drive, the whole deal. Plus they'd have the benefit of hindsight and experience in the handheld sector to better design the beast. The big question is whether gamers feel the time is right to purchase the PSP's successor, the console's only been out for just a little over a year and many feel it's only now beginning to gain some momentum. There's also the fact that we're yet to see the full potential of the PSP, the clock is still locked at 222MHz and dammit, I want to see some 333MHz games before I have to drop another $250 on a new handheld!

In the end it's almost a given Sony's explored both possibilities, and if I were a betting man I hedge my bet on Sony not releasing a PSP2 or a PSP - Lite for a while to come. The PSP is doing just fine at the moment (it actually beat out the DS in sales for the month of May) and the platform is finally starting to get some good games, Sony realises this and knows how much time and effort developers are putting into the system. Releasing a PSP2 or a PSP - Lite right now would be pulling the rug out from under developers and worse, consumers.

So what say you guys, PSP2, a redesign, or just leave it as it is?

I think a PSP2 is more likely but not for a while. So just wait and see what happens.

 » PSP2 in a couple years

The PSP is fine and it still has a couple years of life left in it. A PSP2 would be nice in a couple years, and to all of you who still think PSP games can run at 333mhz that wont work without a system update.

» flaws that can be evaded

The flaws that you point out above can be evaded. First of all the one nob problem.

When playing gran tourismo on the PS2 you also only used one analog stick and the X button. So I don't see the problem... When adding another analog stick I start seeing problems. Where do you put that second one? In the middle of the 4 buttons? Under it? (you will get the same problem as you get with the first one, pain in your thumb) My tip for sony; don't add a second nob!!!

Second the pain in the thumb. I agree on that (though I never use the nub, maybe becuase of that reason). But moving it will be another problem. If you look at your PSP you will see that the arrow keys and the 4 buttons on the left are ib ibe horizontale line. The nub is right bellow the arrow keys and the nub is already as close at the arrows as it can get. What might be a solution is moving the arrows and the buttons up slightly but that may cause some physical problems as well...

UMD to slow problem. Yeah UMD is real slow, I agree. But this can be evaded! I played pretty much games now. Wipeout Pure, Burnout hell even The Sims 2. Wipeout and Burnout wern't any problems, the game time whas way longer the loading times (although Burnout had long loading times when doing those crash races which are of course short). But The Sims 2 had hudge loading times, just unbelievble!!! The difference is verry simpel; Burnout and Wipeout both loaded most of the date in the PSP already but The Sims 2 loads something from the UMD every time you tick your X button.

Also a solution might be using the memory stick that is in the PSP as some sort temp. saving (just like your memory in your computer). Conclusion is that UMD is slow when the makers of a game didn't thougd about it...

Flash memory as replacement? I think flash memory of 2 GB will cost a lot more then a UMD disc...

I don't think sony needs to change this design for now! But I do expect a new design when the PSP2 arives. (which will take a lot of years)

 » Hm..

Im cool with the PSP right now. But if I was to change something.. it would be all the holes. Like the speakers. Why couldnt Sony make the speakers like the Gameboy sp or something and also, TWO analog nubs would be good. otherwise. DONT PUT FPS ON THE PSP gawsh. I also wish that dust couldnt get into the PSP so easily.

Better get it started Sony

 » Just leave it alone

Its only been out for a few years. Why does everyone think it needs to be changed. PS2 & PS1 had like 7 year life spans at atleast 5~6 before talks of the next one. The psp is the greatest handheld ever built. Its a brand new dimension just as the ps1 was with videos and such. Just leave the little guy alone. He has some small flaws but nothing is perfect but it is damn sure close...

.....And on another note.. FIX THE MOTHERF@#%*&! backdoor!!! JEEZUZ. damn thing wont even close anymore (T_T)

 » Redesign!

I love my PSP, but... I wouldn't mind a change, I agree with everything in this article, but if they wanted the PSP smaller (which I want) the analog stick will not be moving. And maybe, the new PSP will run Linux like the PS3 (more compatibility also) and then we could have homebrew, not ISO loaders, or all that illegal stuff, but like eloader junk, because anything you can get in Eloader is legal (except some illegal roms, and small things). PLEASE!!!

» It aint all that bad!

Okay, a PSP2 will happen at some point as it'll make $ony money, but untill then what we have is genuis
machine that people seem to quick to moan about.
Come on, if your used to a Dreamcast controller -
the PSP's setup isn't too much of a problem once
your used to it.
The PSP should never have been named the PSP -
people automaticaly expect it to be a "playstation"
replacement.
Granted the UMD format was a very bad idea, but
this matters not to us homebrew users...
But anyways - what we have is fine. Yes I think a scaled down cheaper version of the PSP would be
great... but it would piss me off no end if it had more
features.

A redesign would just give Sony another reason to raise the price. The DS has no control problems unless if you've been playing Dragon Booster. That game blows.

» Just a couple of things..

A second nub would be nice, and perhaps make them clickable, like the PS2 has L3 and R3 in them. And if they could implement a second set of L and R, that would be really cool. (Then the PS1 emulation would be really great on it!) Also, they should work on the UMD format, and double the space on it, and increase the reading speeds of it. I am sure they can squeeze in a couple more layers on that disk. : ) And more RAM in the PSP would help it a lot....and battery consumption should be fixed as well. But other than that, the PSP is all good.

» a comment title goes here

Instead of making a USB camera with firmware addons, go ahead and build a PSP2 but release a USB external periphal controller (or adapter to PS2 controllers)
:D

Solves the bloggers qualms at any rate.

The PSP _reminds_ me of that dog food that they spent millions developing and engineering to be the "perfect dog food" - and it was nutritionally perfect, and should have been perfect taste wise... only problem was the dogs didnt eat it.

The PSP... well it looks great, and works the way they designed it to... it just doesnt fit in our mouths..er... hands very well.

my 2cents are free today I guess.

   by eggwonder (Unregistered) - 2006-06-13
 » hmmm...

yea the button placement is very cramping on the thumbs but the way the psp is designed there is nowhere else to put them and its already pretty big so adding more nubs would be pointless.

now to the UMD... they load slow but another laser would drain power too fast and memory sticks are actually quite cheap these days but i would rather be able to put something with more space in the psp because memory sticks only hold so much and are tiny so if anything would be good it would be an extra memory stick slot.

there wont be a new design in a while mostly because they are about to release ps3 with psp compatibility so a lot of people who get a ps3 might invest in a psp and then not want to buy the psp2 because they just spent a crap load on a psp; so that would give the psp at least 1 more year after this coming christmas before redesign. it also still has a lot of updates to be incorporated like the camera, gps, and 4 and 8gb memory sticks(not to be confused with HDD) because the psp can't load an 8 gb stick yet nor is there one available but there is an article from a while back talking about them.

 » PSP2 ?

I like the design of the Sony PSP! I just wish that it had alittle more.

*Keyboard. (a design that doesn't look stupid)

*Homebrew (for all firmwares accepted)

*Better Quality TV-OUT Hardware.

*More Functionality e.g. run various applications like skype, msn.... etc. (Properly Assigned Software for PSP use)

*Better Flash Support, Shockwave Macromedia Player, Java Plugin.

*Larger and Cheaper Memory Sticks e.g. 20GB - 60GB (would be nice).

As you can see i have stated the obvious (it can be done!), and i have been (kind of) realistic about my views.

If sony wake up and allow the following, i bet a lot more people would hold on to their PSP for a lot longer.

Let me know what you think or evan better, add any additional software or hardware you would like to see, that i have not already stated above ;DD

!!PSP RULES!!

"*Larger and Cheaper Memory Sticks e.g. 20GB - 60GB (would be nice)."

... Are you stupid? 20-60gb flash cards are NOT gonna ever be what I would call cheep, at least not for the next 10-20-30 years or something like that... If we are paying $250 for 4gb now, how much would 60 cost? sheesh.

   by eggwonder - 2006-06-13
 » lol

in other words sam you want a 30 pound psp that you carry around in a wagon and whenever you turn it on it burns your eyes out of the sockets and dies in 20 minutes but holds all your mp3s, videos, homebrew, operating systems, and pictures without being slow which would make you extremely happy but you would pay like $1000+ for it

dont you think sony is too busy making sure ps3 is ready and fixing it and making it better to even THINK about redesigning psp? and psp still has high sales. Homebrew is technically illegal unless sony can somehow filter to see who REALLY has those games. the only thing i can suggest is doing what nintendo has done. Creating a lighter and brighter ds, but sony can create a lighter psp with a better anolog stick. but also, rmemeber all of those people who used their old ps1 controllers to replace the psp analog? there are many ways to improve on the psp. And i also remember seeing designs for an add-on to the psp to make it capable of using a variaty of memory cards. PSP2 isnt needed quite yet.
