Rockstar to the gaming industry: Rally behind Manhunt 2 and us - Image 1Some are saying that there's a slim possibility that the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) may reconsider its ban on Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Portable video game Manhunt 2 after Rockstar has appealed its decision. If you think Rockstar is going to wait quietly, you are dead wrong.

Rockstar Leeds Co-founder and Studio Head Gordan Hall was recently interviewed by Develop Mag and according to the industry veteran, what BBFC did to Manhunt 2 is ultimately an attack to the video gaming industry. He said:

If you look at a film like Man Bites Dog, it makes Manhunt look tame in comparison, but that film can be bought by anyone aged 18. I don't think Rockstar specifically has been picked on, but I do think that the wider issue attacks our entire industry. We need to teach people that games are an art form - they are more artistic than film.

Gordon Hall then added that he is appealing to the whole industry to rally behind Rockstar because it is highly probable that what happened to their company will also happen to other development studios in the future. The studio head also mentioned that the industry is maturing and more edgy ideas are coming forth:

We are an adult entertainment industry - we may have started out with child-like technology making games solely for a younger audience, but it's just not like that anymore. It might take legislature a little while to catch up, but if the industry sticks together hopefully we can change people's attitudes quicker.

Quit bringing up movies....this is a video games, a completely different kind of media; one that lets players be the character in the games and act out the violent acts. Just destroy this piece of crap game and move on with your lives Rockstar...this crap does NOT need to be brought to the masses, just destroy it!

Wow you don't know nothing about it. For one the characters in the game are pixelated!! You know it's all fake because 3D GCI characters aren't real. Where as movies, Real Actors! real settings, makes it all the more impressionable for kiddies.

Just think.. are you more likely to see an actor look-a-like in streets or GTA look-a-like characters...

if the game is too violent you think for your child then dont let them play or buy it! god damn it pay attention to what your children are doing. hell if they wanted those kids can buy knives, guns, bombs or make their own. hell they can even go get a freaking ninja sword from the novality shop and sharpen it to do some ninja stuff they saw on an R-rate movie. yet games are the only ones to blame...? hell where do you think people got stupid violent ideas before playstation and xbox? maybe from books, maybe from old western movies. or hell maybe people out there are just nuts and want to kill people! anyone thats in charge think of that? some people are just nuts no mater if they played Doom or GTA so I dont see why the rest of us gamers are being punished and shut off from great games that we are responsible with becuase of some negligant parents and insane people. might as well destory that new transformers movie and die hard becuase its too violent and kids will go to junkyards are look for transforming cars from other planets... geez give it a rest people and dont be so anal!

There are lives that could be ruined cause of this. It's proven that violent video games can affect kids but movies can't, if this game passes in the UK it will be a shame cause a few incconet people will die and a few will become domestic violaters. The US game rating system failed, it will be a shame if it also fails in the UK :S. Innocent lives are more important than a game (not only just a game but a sucky game).

Why's everyone so stupid today? Metalboy, please take your freaking hands out for your pants when you read news about MH2. And why the hell are you here, anyway? You clearly aren't a gamer, you're a whiner. And from your piss-poor use of English and immature attitude, I'd say you aren't old enough (at least mentally) to own this game.

The US rating system FAILED? Movies NEVER affect people? Games KILL people? Back to math class bud--show your work, or you get an F. Stop jacking off to news about the ban and come up with some real proof, or better yet a non-biased view point.

   Re: metalspector (Unregistered) - 2007-08-14
 » @ Barakku

WTF is your problem Barakku? Want to challenge my english? First of all, you did some grammar mistakes so don't even talk (about the same amount as me, plus my primary language is Spanish). In addition, the US rating system for video games did fail as they should have accounted the massacre that occured a few years ago because of a guy who was mentally affected by the original Manhunt. Also, there must be a logical reason why Manhunt 2 is banned in the UK, considering this is the second game that has been denied classification in the history of the UK (the first one being Carmaggedon, but it was later rated). Furthermore, yes, some games have affected people and influenced them on commiting various killings and many cases of domestic violence have been attributed to violent videogames (although it's very rare, just Manhunt 2 being denied classifications spells out that it's sadistically violent).

PS: I think you're being the biased one here taking it on me with dumb excuses and excuses with no true basis. And, in response to saying I am not a gamer, I am a gamer, ever since I got an SNES when I was 4 or 5.

are you serious? that there is absolutely 0% of the blame to be put on movies?? why about all that rock music these scaliwags are listening too these days? you forgot to give that a mention. there is no absolute for of media that is to blame for all the awuful things that happen in the world, they all play their part. personally i am all for the AO rating to be introduced where ever it hasn't been already (aus in paticular) and then if anything is too extreme for that category then sure ban it, but only after adults are aloud to play the games that were designed for them

What the governments of countries that have banned Manhunt 2 are telling people is that nobody - from 18 to 80 - is mature enough to handle this game, and you're not allowed to get this game regardless of your maturity. Can you really agree with that?

   Re: D24g0n (Unregistered) - 2007-08-15
 » to metalspector

ummmm, first of all, saying that movies have zero blame is just wrong... its not just violence in movies that effect people, its the smoking that gets to them as well. with the video game side, I agree with several of the others when they say it is the parents responsibility when their children pick out games to filter what they find inappropriate, or teach their children what is right and wrong so when they do play a violent game, they know it is fun. I don't even agree that video games have a profound enough effect on the majority of people to warrant the blanket opinion the media seems to have about how dangerous games are. It seems like they believe games have a mind control effect that can tell people what to do. I think this is just an attempt by the movie industry to push out a potential threat to their profits.

 » Wow. +/

I am 14.

I will say, with 100% assuredness, that video games have affected me less than movies, TV, and music.
(Not combined.)

I have played every GTA game, DooM game, Quake game, and many many other games that involve killing.

I haven't once had an impulse to act in the way that a video game character has.

On the OTHER hand, I HAVE cussed by the example set on television and music.

I'm not saying that video games CAN'T affect people, but I'm saying that there's no use to being biased against video games while the form of media it seems that we're most comfortable with, TV, remains almost unchanged with most bans being for solely political reasons.

   Re: Reformer A.D. (Unregistered) - 2007-08-15
 » hey metal guy...

You are very critical of games. Have you actually research and done tests to find that there is an actually link to killers and video games? Yeah the guys that shoot up schools played games that involved killing. Yes some wacko may have bought GTA and killed someone. It is dumb to assume just because they have played a violent game it caused them to kill. I can draw that same assumption about anything. For example since you can't figure this out yourself... Say someone drinks a certain brand of Soda and has killed someone. Then let's say that another killer schools up a school and also drinks the same brand of Soda. Someone such as yourself would then draw that there is a correlation between killers and the certain brand of Soda. That would be the stupidest thing someone could say. If it were true that games were the SOLE meaning only reason these crimes were committed then the gaming studios would have been held responsible. Since that isn't the case you are just sadly mistaken that games make people kill. People kill people and have always killed people. People are just nuts and they will kill someone because they wanted to. If these people were completely sane in the first place they would not have been so easily influenced by the fiction game play. I won't believe you claim until more than 25% of gamers that play violent games start randomly killing if that does happen I will place a bullet between my freaking head before I let the game tell me I should kill anyway. Then if you want you can blame my suicide on the game and it would be true... You and all those parents complaining make me laugh. If those stupid parents watch groups would spend more time teaching other parents how to make sure their kids know right from wrong and teach the parents to get more involved with their children's lives then this problem would not exist. I know some groups do but most like yourself just want to place blame on the gaming industry and not the parents or the lack of mental sanity the killer had. Lastly, before this gets too long... you are totally out of line saying movies have no blame whatsoever. Most people pick up smoking from tv and movies. Smoking kills thousand a day. Games are blamed in violent crimes a few times a year possibly... so go on against movies if you truly want to change something..

   Re: Appalled (Unregistered) - 2007-08-15
 » Are you serious??

ACTUALLY, smart guy, games are a STORYTELLING medium with a fair amount of interactivity. They are VERY much the same kind of media as movies, comic books, novels and any other kind of story-telling medium you can think of. Games ARE art, games ARE easily paralleled to movies and games deserve the SAME treatment as movies, television, comic books, role-playing (pencil and paper) games, literature, etc. This game DOES need to be brought to the masses, who can then choose INDIVIDUALLY whether they would like to support this game or not. Don't forget your individuality just because you're a subscribing member of the Republican party. What everyone else says isn't what you have to think.

One of the largest industries in america is pornography. That is bascailly the equivalent of an 18+ rating in video games. The games industry is maturing. While I do believe this game deserves an 18+ rating I think it is the video game console makers that need to losen up and allow all types of games on their console.

So what if a kid could go and buy this game at a store? I'm sure the same kid could go buy an R-rated movie if he really wanted to.

Video games have just as much of a right to be violent as other forms of media entertainment. Yes, it is more interactive, but as violent books in time became violent films, new technology has allowed us to create violent games. It is a progression of technology, not of ideals.

@ metalspector,

Id like to see the evidence that you seem to possess that shows that violent video games lead mentally ill people, into doing crimes that they really wouldn't of done, had they not played them.

It seems your reasoning is just like bread, bread is a gate way food, it leads on to harder things such as caffeine.

98% of all mass murderers ate bread before acting out such atrocities.

99% of violent crimes happen within 24 hours of eating bread.

I live in the UK, my parents are British. if you don't like man hunt 2. go campaign to have it banned in your sh..itty Spanish country. leave the UK for the grown ups and the people who live here.

While I'm at it, learn to use PARAGRAPHS. Man my grammar might be poor, and my spelling is not perfect. but at least I know how to make a comment readable.

If someone finds it too disturbing to play, they can damn well just stop playing! And if we're paying 3-6 hundred dollars for a gaming console, we should be exposed to all types of games creative developers could think of.

How do I know the parents failed them? Why were they playing violent video games unsupervised?

I would love to see what kind of sesame street world we would live in if everything we did was dictated by the understanding and impressionability of children. How would we grow and mature if everything we allowed ourselves to be exposed to was created for people of a (no more than) seventh grade reading level?

Attack on the video game industry my foot. All rockstar does it produce immoral, violent games that go right past fun into sinister, cruel entertainment. I will never ever buy a game from them nor will I ever work for them. I can't even take them seriously. To me, they are outlaws being punished for trying to mame America and other countries but filling people's head with their garbage. There BS games should end right here along with their sad attempt to 'push the limits of the industry.'

Attack on the video game industry... psh, try attack on this nations morals and ethics. It's basically a terrorist training game. I'd really like to hear an end to their sad, sad song that they are not getting treated fairly. I'm sorry but they're getting treated the way they should, with the exact 'fairness' someone on trail for murder would be.

On a parting note, the words Paris Hilton and Rockstar are the same to me.

 » So

Bottom Line. Everyone needs to grow up and take responsibility for themselves and their own actions. This game was produced for a niche market. To some fun, to others its over the top.

Perfect comparison is comparing Rodriguez's Planet Terror (Part of the Grindhouse film released in 2006) He pushes the envelope in that film. Just like Rockstar is pushing the envelope here. You don't like it? Don't buy it. Make sure your kids aren't subjected to it. But by God don't tell me or anyone else what is good for us. Please.

But lets alllll be honest with ourselves here on this little quabble. The game hasn't even been released. We don't know HOW far it pushes the envelope or HOW gruesome it really is. We're just going on what the media is saying. You know what I say? Let the CONSUMER decide.

So before you get all "May God rain down fire upon you for your beliefs," let me just say this. Its a video game. Grow up.

P.S. A terrorist training game? Do you even know what the plot or story is?

P.S.S. You think this is morally and ethically wrong? Go check out Postal 2. Then talk. Honestly theres ALOT of worse things out there. Just because this is a major publisher is the only reason it's getting so much grief. I say Hurrah Rockstar, keep pushing the envelope and give em' Hell.

 » Stradigos? More like Jackass

Someone please copy and paste this to Wikipedia, under the word Jackass. A terrorist training game.....HAAAAAAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHA loonies like this are the reason companies can't make the games they want to make. You just compared a video game to murdering people. YOU ARE A TOOL.

 » OK

You are the reason that people go out and kill other people. People like you who are overbearing and overprotective that sqaush everyones right to think for themselves, and trying to ram "religion" and your "morals and ethics" down everyones throats. If you don't like it - Don't buy it! Speak with your wallets, not your pieholes. Religion has killed more people than video games, movies, and music could EVER dream of combined.
Having someone tell you something is bad makes you want it even more. It's human nature. Just don't buy it, watch it, listen to it, or support it. Change the channel! Whining about how bad and imoral something is in a forum for the people who actually enjoy said "bad thing" won't make it go away. Go find other like-minded people and whine to them, and join with them to boycott the item. Hit the makers of the item in the wallet. It'll do more damage.

PS. I played Manhunt one and felt it was repetitive and got old fast. But I love the GTA series and would like more"Adult only" games. I don't like being told I can't have something just becasue someone else is offended by it. Noone is forcing YOU to buy it and play it.
