Not long after DarkRayne introduced his PSP Slim JigKick battery through a video, another homemade video is out complete with a makeshift "user DarkRayne" banner. This new video clip by shows how DarkRayne downgrades a PSP Slim using an unmodified, normal battery and an AC adaptor USB connected to the unit. It's just too bad that the video is cut short, however, and we couldn't make heads and tails out of Polish.

In this video DarkRayne shows quite clearly the battery he used for the downgrading, and the memory stick that he inserted inside the PSP slot. After turning on the PSP the videoclip is cut short, leaving us in the dark about any specific steps to be done. We couldn't confirm how the exact process is done at this point, so we're shelving this under "Rumors" for the meantime.

We'll keep you informed with updates as they go, of course, so stay tuned!

Well, I'm sure that Polish is dificult languge, but look closer at that battery slot:) There is NO battery there :D DarkRayne claims that he run Pandora with soft-modem AC adapter, without any battery at all. I'm sure of that, because he's user of our polish forum :)

 » hey!

QJ, you forgot to give me credit! I pointed this out yesterday, under the first article you wrote about him!

And yes, the guy is saying that the AC adapter and USB alone are doing the trick. It's quite possible. I agree also that it's possible to do the trick where you've got a pandora battery and you take it out with the battery connected, but still, it's possible that the adapter can do the same. I just hope the mod is a software mod like pandora. I don't want to play with the wires...

I dunno if its fake or not..but here is something to take note of.

Put a pandora battery in the PSP, then plug in the AC adaptor and turn it on. You can turn it off now if you want. Then you can remove the battery. As long as the AC adaptor is inserted, the PSP will "remember" the old battery and will ALWAYS boot in service mode till you unplug the AC adaptor.

   Re: Torch - 2007-10-24
 » FAKE!!

Just watched the video. CHRIST! *****in fake. The AC adaptor is already plugged in right from the start!!!

He simply started it with a Pandora battery, plugged in the AC, removed battery. Now he starts recording the video.

He can FULL SHUTDOWN the PSP also, but as long as the AC adaptor is still plugged in, the PSP will "remember" the old battery and will still boot in service mode.

Secret USB function my ass.

Analysis of the new video posted:
" maybe you will be interesed this video which should clean my nickname http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v+VbKYaF6PElc#GU5U2spHI_4"

1) This is genuine...

OR

2)He has an ELF launcher as an autoboot plugin in flash0:/CFW/BOOT/EBOOT.PBP. At boot time, it checks if a button is pressed and if so launches ms0:/kd/resurrection.elf, otherwise goes to XMB. Notice how he is possibly holding down the SELECT button at the time of booting the pandora menu.

He could have also rigged the recovery.prx to launch the resurrection.elf instead of using autoboot.

   Re: Torch - 2007-10-25
 » @DarkRayne

Were just being skeptical, considering recent events with Team AoP, etc.

The first video simply could not be believed, because of the AC adaptor being already plugged in right from the start.

The second video is convincing, but I was just expanding on the possibilites. Dont take it personally.

 » Nice point, Torch!

Yeah, you're right. With further inspecting of this, THIS IS COMPLETELY A FAKE VID!!!

Just look at it. (Pointed your steps again, Torch...)

The AC Adaptor is plugged in all the time, from the beginning. He simply turned the PSP on with the magic battery, then when he entered the bootmenu, shut down his PSP, took the battery out and restarted with the AC plugged in. The PSP remembered that the last battery that was in was a jigkick. So it booted to Pandora Bootmenu again! If we would now had took the AC out and then shut down completely and plugged in the AC adaptor again, the PSP would have booted in to the XMB!!!

HAHAA QJ posting fake news...

Thanks Torch for enlightening me!

 » Oh... Also...

The thread title is COMPLETELY WRONG.

First: PSP Slim can be "downgraded" already with normal battery.
Second: Not DOWNGRADED, but kind-of UPGRADED to unofficial firmware. So now the title misleads people into thinking that Slim is downgradable.
Third: The title has nothing to do with the subject. "Rumor: DarkRayne downgrades PSP Slim with normal battery" when it should be like "FAKE Rumor: DarkRayne upgrades PSP Slim to unofficial firmware using a softmodded AC adaptor".

Remember how all of you over reacted when team m33 came about? "Scammers!!! Fake!!!! They ripped off Dark Alex!!! &^$$ Russians!!! Noobs!!!"...

Yet, a month later when dark alex said he was m33, everyone suddenly started supporting m33, not apologizing for all the statements they made earlier about m33...

Remember when the Chinese dude with the leaked JigKick/Pandora made a video back in July, downgrading a PSP using nothing but "a regular battery and a regular memory stick"? Everyone cried bloody murder "FAKE! It's photoshopped! [sic] It's a video, that's why he's hiding the memory stick indicator! He switched the PSP when no one was looking!"

Yet, a month later when Fanjita released the battery himself, everyone made believe that they never made stupid comments about the video.

Anyone see a trend? Give the poor Polish guy some time. Remember, there's a saying that goes "Evidence of absence is not the same as absence of evidence."

Just because the adapter is already plugged in DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY mean it's fake. It just means there's a POSSIBILITY of it being fake. It's quite possible that the guy simply forgot to remove the adapter in the beginning, or maybe he had no idea that the Pandora stays in memory, so maybe he didn't realize that leaving it in there makes it look fake.

So, yeah, give the guy some time. I bet all of you above are gonna be like "Dude! Dark_Rayne, you're like the next dark alex! You're so cool and awesome! Let me kiss your @$$ and suck your d!ck..."

Seriously, you flamers can be such noobs at times...

Besides, if a battery can be soft modded into a pandora kit, it's quite possible the adapter can be modified in such a way to force it to boot from the USB device...

(And of course, the USB device would be emulated by the computer).

I for one believe with about 85% faith that Dark Rayne is not a scammer.

We should be hearing from him within the next two weeks, according to the posts I've read on the polish website his friend runs.

   Re: SCLakitu - 2007-10-24
 » RE: settle down

Pandora works by changing the serial code to 0xFFFFFFFF to tell the PSP to boot into service mode, where it boots the IPL from a hidden boot sector on the memory stick. Even if he did change the serial code on an AC adapter, he wouldn't be able to change the service mode to boot from USB since it is hardcoded into the PSP.

   Re: JollyRoger - 2007-10-24
 » I totally agree!

I have been with the scene since the first memory card swap exploit, and things have been pretty good for the PSP but recently The whole scene has lost faith in everyone but Dark alex, now don't get me wrong he's great but these people need to keep in mind that DA and Fanjita are not the only people capable of making our PSP's ,and our lives, better. C'mon guys, have faith!

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-24
 » SCLakitu

I know what pandora does... I'm pretty sure we're in the same level when it comes to "intel" on homebrew. I used the same kit that you used. Thus, I know perfectly well that 0xFFFFFFFF makes a pandora, and 0x00000000 is used to make an autoboot battery.

However, who's to say that Sony hasn't made a "Jigkick" type boot that is kick started via the power adapter? Besides, the two are interconnected (the battery and recharger), so how do you know that Dark_Rayne didn't somehow manage to force the 0xFFFFFFFF serial to somehow be sent via the modded power line, and the USB?

Remember, just because the battery method exists, it doesn't rule out the possibility of alternate debricking! That's like saying that just because Pandora exists, there's no such thing as the "recovery menu". Thus, just because Service mode via battery exists, it doesn't go to say that recovery mode via rechargers don't exist. Now please excuse me while I watch DR's new video. kthx

   Re: SCLakitu - 2007-10-24
 » RE: settle down

Anything's possible I suppose. Heck, if he did actually do this, then it's another unbricking/downgrading tool that we have at our disposal, and that's never bad. I just have to look at it with a sceptical eye, seeing as he released videos of him doing some rather big things that would normally take a bit of time in such a quick succesion. But again, who knows, he could have been developing this for a while. Only time will tell.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-25
 » no worries

I don't blame you. I'm about 20% skeptical too. However, due to the videos he's provided, I feel like I can give him the benefit of the doubt.

Of course, I'd hate it if this was a repeat of the infamous "wiiloader" overflow exploit from Jan 2007... It was supposed to be a jpeg image that would cause an overflow (similar to the tiff overflow used for PSP downgrading way yonder) allowing wiis to play bootlegs (oh, I mean "backups") without a modchip. Needless to say it was a scam.

i know how he did that. ive done the same on a fat psp many times. all u gotta do is have ur "magic" pandora mem stick and ur pandora battery in ur psp. turn the psp on and wait for the pandora menu, then plug in ur battery charger. take ur pandora battery out and turn the psp off. when u turn it on again with no battery inside it will still go to the pandora menu. i dont remember if u have to put the psp in sleep mode or shut it down after u take the battery out.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-24
 » finished watching the video

Ok, I was expecting that video to be one of the power adapter, but it was actually for the slim battery. I have to say that this video is very convincing. He shows in the very beginning that the slim battery isn't modified (it doesn't autoboot). The whole time, the battery is in view. He then runs a program on the computer, and sure enough, it boots into pandora mode. So, to the best of my knowledge, the soft mod has been proven real! Now, we just need an updated video showing the "no battery" kit in action, this time without the wire connected in the beginning. Hopefully that'll make all the flamers be quite. BTW, to JollyRancher if you are reading this, are you THE jollyrancher? You know who I'm referring to? The one with all the "recipes"?

There goes this guy's credibility.

As it's already been stated, it you run pandora, plug the AC adapter in, then shutdown and pull it out, the PSP will react to the AC adapter as if it were the pandora battery until you unplug it or start with a normal battery.

Polish attention whores.
