DivX for the PSP? - Image 1

According to a recent post on Gamer Gal's Insider, it seems Sony's PSP may very well be getting itself certification to use a very special four-letter word: DivX. That's the new rumor we've gotten word of, and it's certainly pretty juicy.

Here's the main excerpt from the Insider report:

Seems our little friend the PSP will soon be getting DivX Certification to allow for the downloading of movies and TV shows through the PC store, transferred from PS3 and from selected third party online retailers (psst...starts with G and ends with le).

The post continues, stating that this might very well happen in two months, with the release of PSP Firmware update 4.0.

As you can probably guess, this rumor makes known two big things. The first is the potential arrival of DivX on the PSP, and the second is the possibility of seeing FW 4.0 in two months. As always, take this rumor with a grain of salt. We'll keep checking for more word on this development, however, so keep checking QJ for updates.

it would be real nice if Sony does that.

mp4 better quality and smaller size
divx larger file size and grainy image

it's what they call supifying the program
for the lamen, in other words it your not
smart enough to figure out that mp4 is
much better, then your a noob and this
is for the clamering nooblet to apease
their collective idiacy.

   Re: brisknfade - 2008-01-12
 » Yea but

Divx is considered an mp4 file so im assuming you are speaking about h.264 encoded files as being superior, and that is true. The thing is that divx files are easily available for nearly all video content whereas h.264 files are still relatively rare in comparison, so putting some divx files on a memstick is that much more convenient then waiting a long while to convert it.

Now re-coding a divx file will more then likely have the file end up looking worse in the end, but I do agree that having the smaller file for use on something like the PSP is probably better if your willing to go through the trouble of doing it.

It's funny that you rip on laymen and noobs for their "collective idiacy" while filling your post full of spelling errors. I especially enjoyed the irony of you misspelling "idiocy." Thanks for that! It really made my day!

h.264 is better than divx but imo the point is that sony is finally opening up the platform a bit.

» this is for all non-content people.

just keep those wishes coming.
these fanboys just keeps raving on things to be updated in their precious psp.
how long has been sony been giving software enhancements to your psp? did you pay 250 and signed a contract that sony will keep giving free software update to it?
anybody out there ever received any update for their gameboy / DS?

be thankful people.
all those sony hater, i wonder how they still keep complaining.

divx support is cool addition if ever sony succumb to fanboy rumors once again.

but i would rather have 44khz audio on videos than another codec which is definitely similar to mp4. 22khz is just ugly to my ears.
and flash video player support will be much rather appreciated. i also wonder if sony would also license divx streaming video like on stage6.com because the PS3 can play divx videos stored on HDD but not streaming ones.

 » Big Rumour? Sure.

But very probable considering the PS3 already supports DiVX with the latest update. It's only logical that the PSP would get it next.

» divx would be cool BUT

I also like Divx, but now Im like: So what?
If I'm gonna convert my videos anyway to have them smaller (PSP-resolution instead of eg. 640x480), I would choose mp4, because the codec is way better than divx. Only good thing about divx would be the shorter time to convert the videos. ("less complicated codec")
Oh, and of course it would be cool for me if I don't want to convert my videos and have enough space to put my normal resolution divx videos straight onto my PSP.

But there are no disadvantages of adding divx-support right?
So Sony, just do it! ;D

RETARDED, and the retarded kids jumping for joy.

MPEG4 is higher quality, AND takes up less space.

That's like saying you want MP3 sound over ACC or FLAC.

You surely said more than one. And I wish you hadn't. Do you even know what AAC is? or FLAC? The latter is a loss-less codec. How can you even compare MP4 to FLAC? Now THAT's retarded.

And what is more popular? MP3 or AAC/FLAC? I'll let the billions of people who use MP3 decide. Same goes for DiVX you fcktard.

SHUT UP, some people dont like to convert every video they have to mp4. for one it takes time to convert, especially with slow PCs, and two the general public wont notice the quality difference between mp4 vs divx. its called convenience bro.

Smaller file size is more convenient butt nugget
I can fit more mp4's on a stick in the same
space that would have fit only one divx.

 » Wicked_Insider

SO what if MP4 are better....any one who uses torrent sites for vids know that more than 70% of the video are not MP4 on there.....THIS just makes it alot easier for most people....AND

"Smaller file size is more convenient"
you know whats more "convenient"....not waiting for an hour or two for converting...
not how much of a size you can fit...
Sure i can fit more....but i would rather just slide and drop.....

im not the biggest fan for divx but thats what most of my vids are

sure the name divx sounds cool but come on can't you stop being a ***** and just be happy that the psp got divx.....peace

   Re: Vipre77 - 2008-01-12
 » ^^^ What he said

A lot people still have older files around that were encoded to divx long before h.264 was around. There was a time when divx was as good as it got, you know, and it wasn't that long ago either.

If you need another reason, here's one. I've got a couple TV tuners in my computer. The software that I'm using has the option to record video directly to divx format. Sure I could record the raw video feed and then convert to h.264 manually later on, but that's a pretty big hassle when divx isn't that much worse both in terms of video quality and compression. They are both subsets of the MPEG-4 specification afterall. I'd challenge most anyone to see much of a difference in video quality between encodes at PSP resolutions given similar encode settings and certainly, you're not going to get any kind of space savings worth talking about. Yes, it'd be a little better in h.264, but it's not like it's night and day difference here. You've really gotta be one super-anal SOB if you think it's really that much better.

Adding support for divx isn't about bringing a "superior" format to the table. It's simply about expanding support for a wider variety of formats and divx still happens to be the most widely available for most online content. h.264 is picking up steam quickly, but it's still not as pervasive as divx is.

Basically, if you can't be happy about improve codec support then you are a sad little man.

 » NO U!

convenience is the ability to not be forced into waiting for a damned 2 hour conversion of a movie. ill be able to download, drag, drop, and watch, with no damned steps in the middle. my psp hasnt seen a movie inside of it in quite some time for this vary reason. i personally cant wait until divx comes to the psp.

   by Goobers - 2008-01-12
 » well...

apparently having DIVX support might not be what many of you, and i, thought.

since the mp4 extension is a CONTAINER format like AVI... DIVX is a video format used WITHIN a container. in other words... you'll most likely see divx IN MP4...

so the arguement is really, not divx vs mp4,

but mp4 vs avi

or divx vs h.264/AVC

what we need is direct AVI support.

   Re: brisknfade - 2008-01-12
 » mp4s

It's not too difficult a job to change the container from avi to mp4 if you use MP4Box or one of it's gui's like YAMB.

What I wish they would give us is Matroska support.
   by MjW - 2008-01-12
 » nice

Some people have to stop complaining. Divx on the psp is a great idea.

Actually is better than the ps3 Divx taking in mind downloadable content coz low res divx videos look like crap on the 40 inch 1080p screen.

On the PSP though a common downloaded divx video will look just fine.

I hope this rumour turns true and maybe my bad opinion about this gamer-gal-surfer-girl-look-alike might change.

   by Mentality - 2008-01-12
 » PS3

Not useful really for on the go, specially for people with smaller memory sticks, so would stick with mp4 personally. And at home, if you got media server running, you can watch DivX movies already on your PSP through your PS3 from you PC thus already having the feature (sort of :D)

Some people's reactions, honestly - Divx is convenient. It's not rocket science. Get over your e-***** and try life. You won't lose your precious MP4 support, so you can still spend hours downloading Divx and then more hours converting them to MP4. Fun.

I have a social life and an 8Gb memory stick, so I'm happy that it'll take me less time to load up and ship out ^^

"I have a life so you mp4 lamers can go to hell?" God damn, how insecure do you have to be to announce to everyone that you "have a social life?"

I can appreciate the drag and drop convenience of DivX, but if I'm putting any movie on my PSP, it's either because it's an awesome short clip or a full-length movie I really love.

Either way, I encode while I sleep and save tons of space.
   by joefro007 - 2008-01-12
 » I love it!

Who ever in this comment list thinks divx sucks must love sucking because every time I've converted a avi container to mp4 it seems to grow so you can have your 800megabye files I'll stick to smaller files. for my 1 gb memory stick and my remote play.

 » PSP Firmware 4.00

PSP Firmware 4.00
- Improved XMB colour options (where's the black?), include the colours on the Slim + Lite as well
- No need to select "Memory Stick" to access media (like on the PS3, where you can just get your stuff right away)
- In-game XMB overlay and custom soundtracks (to correspond with the rumoured identical feature on PS3 2.00)
- Directly displays game/video/music UMD name instead of 'UMD' (like it does on PS3)
- Ability to create a space on the Memory Stick on the fat PSP to store data to improve load times (so the S+L isn't alone)
- 'Turn off the System' option (certain PSP docking stations - but not mine, ha - block access to the power switch)
- Information boxes that appear to inform you of system status ('A new wireless access point has been detected', 'the battery is low')
- Ability to link a PSP and a PlayStation Network account
- Store access for PSP
- Friends option on XMB, along with all your Friends from your PS3
- Ability to edit the background colour, but still let it change each month (who wants a whole month of dark brown?)
- No need to select 'USB Connection' to connect to a PC/PS3 (so you can still listen to music or play games while files are added)
- Complete synchronisation of PS3 and PSP ("A download has completed on your PS3 console")

I like having the memory stick icon, in fact I was pissed off the was no HDD icon on PS3.
At least firware 2.00 (PS3) allowed you to put games in an album.

Unless they allow it so higher resolution videos are scaled to the PSP screen this is fine, but if it only allows for standard PSP res and lower then this is quite pointless.

 » Pointless

This will only be useful if it allows you to drop avi files encoded with xvid (ie >90% of the movies and tv shows available on the internet) on to a memory stick and play them directly regardless of resolution, which is unlikely. If sony or a hacker could make this possible it would be awesome and make the psp a viable portable media player. What they probabally have in mind is support for divx encoded in a mp4 container with the same old restrictions on resolution. This is useless as like others have said H264 is a better codec.

it doesn't sound stupid, but it's the kind of thing that isn't put into firmware... it's put into software (in the mem card)...
