The Sony PlayStation Portable homebrew development scene keeps on surprising the video game world with its leaps and bounds in terms of creativity and ingenuity, and this update is no different. Behold - DarkRayne's jigkick battery, made from a Sony PlayStation Portable Slim & Lite battery, and he's got a video to prove it.

We're still not sure how true this one is, so we're filing this one under rumors for the time being.

Of course, as we really can't understand Polish, we can't verify at the moment if this is a legitimate claim or not - but the video itself does look convincing. Note that he shows everything from start to finish, making it clear through various times in the clip that he is in fact using a PSP Slim & Lite's battery.

How did he do it? Details are scant, but according to DarkRayne himself, he used a software modification process to "pandorize" the battery itself, and not with a hardware modification.

A little bit of refresher for those of us unfamiliar with a JigKick battery: it's basically a battery used for unbricking a bricked PSP, or downgrading a Sony PSP with any firmware version. Until then, please note once more that we're filing this under rumors, so let's not try anything with our Sony PSP Slim batteries just yet. As we're all waiting, you can go ahead and check out the video in the embed below.

I don't know if this is true, but if the second part is, we've got a hacker who has surpassed even Fanjita! Apparently, this guy claims to have had made a battery that can do pandora's effects... without a pandora battery:

And I quote:

Exclamation JigKick Battery from SLIM and Pandora without battery

For those of you wondering... no, you can't use a slim battery on a PSP Fat...

So don't bother asking (it's more due to physical limitations than hardware limitations). The connectors don't quite touch the fat psp when putting in a slim battery.

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2007-10-25
 » actually

the psp slim batt will fit into a phat with a little modification
only it bricks
the psp slim battery has been pandorized for a while now
all you need to do is lift one pin from the EEPROM and the batt reports 0xFFFFFF and becomes a service mode battery
sourced from lan.st

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2007-10-25
» need to elaborate a bit more

even though its true that the slim batt has pandora like bahaviour when EEPROM is removed or has a pin lifted, i dont think it has been utilised yet, i dont know, maybe the preparation of the memstick may be different.
i dont want lan.st to be flooded by noob questions (so no direct link) as its more a serious developers site and i dont post myself.but shes a damn good read, i mean these guys are geniuses.

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2007-10-25
 » here it is

Back in the nearby past, Cory149 and l_oliveira more or less accidentally discovered that a fat battery with eeprom removed behaved strange: the PSP instantly turned on when the battery was inserted and refused to do anything useful. Later on, when the Pandora had been released, Cory gave the battery a go with a working Pandora stick and discovered that the battery with eeprom removed behaved like a Pandora battery!

It turned out that it was not necessary to remove the full eeprom, just cutting one pin was enough to convert the battery into a Pandora!

It's been described in more detail on Ben Heck's forum (the voltage regulator forgot to give credits to Cory and l_oliveira), including a detailed description on how to convert the battery.

The new and good news is that the procedure works on the slim battery too! No bricked batteries, you get a fully working Pandora battery! I've tried it because I was bored and wanted to do something and can say that it works flawlessly. The slim boots the Cemetery stick on it without problems and when checking the serial with the battery converter (I used Cory's open source tool) it shows as 0xFFFFFFFF.

» ben heck is a genius

Have you seen that guy's console laptops?!

BTW, so if this is the case, (I'm not flaming) why is it that generic batteries with no eeprom won't boot into service mode? Because having no eeprom is effectively the same as removing the eeprom, right? Just wondering. Or is it just eprom, where you can only modify it using magnets?

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2007-10-26
 » maybe right

the new generic bats have hardware modification that make the psp aware of pandora hack
no known woy of pandora is known yet

 » fake

this looks fake since when he was distracting you talking about the battery some one switched the system .look at the system he puts down and you'll see it is on the system info screen then he start talking about the differences between the fat and slim battery and on minute -454 the paper were the system is moves toward him then magically when he picks the system up its out of the system info screen and into the xmb screen. if that don't scream FAKE I don't what does

you people are idiots! this IS IN FACT REAL!!!!!

there is a hardware mod out there to convert a battery to a pandora. thats why he showed the fat one puller apart

   Re: SCLakitu - 2007-10-23
 » He stated himself that...

He did not modify the actual Slim Battery's hardware, it's still possible he faked it because he never actually proved that he did it by a software mod.

   Re: FreePlay - 2007-10-23
 » yeah, it's probably real

Not possible through software, but likely possible through hardware.

   Re: Advertising -

   Re: SCLakitu - 2007-10-23
» It still has the possibility of being a fake.

The whole reason he made the video is to show a slim battery supposedly working as a pandora with NO hardware mods, only a software modification. Because he had not proved it was not a hardware mod, and truly was a software mod, it may have been a fake.

Just don't jump up and get excited about it, it's only a rumor.

He didn't hide the MAC Address. I'm suprised since all the other videos find ways to cover it pretty well.

   Re: lol(unregistered) - 2007-10-24
 » k.

That would be because those idiots don't know MAC addresses are part of layer 2 on the OSI model. MAC addresses are not forwarded through router and are only used in local networks.
In conclusion it's a waste of time and brain (not that they seem to present any) to hide it from the public. Don't believe me? read up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model

   Re: Torch - 2007-10-24
 » MAC Hiding.

I can think of many ways to sabotage using MAC address.

I can take a game ISO, write my own rogue game sharing data (game sharing data is stored in a single file which is sent as a whole). When using game sharing, if the host detects a known MAC, it can send the rogue data instead of the real one. The rogue data's eboot can brick the PSP, delete IDStorage, ruin NAND parition, etc.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-24
 » hello world

have they made a trojan, or at least a hello world that'll permanently destroy a PSP so that Sony or even pandora can't unbrick?

   Re: ultimax - 2007-10-24
 » iamback

That's impossible. Pandora does it without paying attention to what's on the flash. The flash is like a box, and no matter what's in it, pandora just throws the box away and creates a new one.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-24
 » idstorage

But I thought you can accidentally corrupt your ID Storage by using a bad flash, leading to a perma-brick. So wouldn't there be a trojan that can imitate the effects of a bad flash?

   Re: Wicked_Insider - 2007-10-24
 » Just about right...

iamback is the only douchbag here that would want
a virus for the PSP so he could spread it around and
then spam for his rip off unbrick service.

I mean I've come to expect as much from iamback
it's the only way he could find to fuel the service
he provides, or shall I say dis-service.

Even looking for such a possibility to perma-brick
others PSP's or just thinking about the possibility
shows just how much of an ASS HOLE iamback
truly is.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-24
 » hiding

Not only is he gutsy enough to show his mac address (sorry, lolunregistered, I haven't read your wiki article yet), he also repeatedly lets his reflection show on the PSP... Not even dark alex or fanjita have "unmasked" themselves yet. Well, ok, fanjita has admitted to being robert court, but he still hasn't sent out any vids of himself. Dark Alex has only said that his name's alejandro, and that he's a goth and has cats, and has left it at that.

 » wicked insider...

a. it's not my service. I just get commissions for sending referrals to him.

b. I don't see how a permanent brick would be useful. I am pretty sure that the guy (stores.ebay.com/psp-unbricker) said that he'll refund people if he can't fix their PSPs. So, if I were to make an un-unbrickable PSP, I'd only be ruining business for him (and thus that'd destroy my ref bonuses, too).

Your nickname is so perfect for you, you wicked insider :P

If you look at the last possible shot b4 he sets down the psp and zoom in on it, you see it went back into the XMB. I still don't like the fact that he removes it from our site and then doesn't redisplay the firmware again before showing off his Pandora Slim >.>

Poland, home of Stealing, Copying and Pirating things made this.
OF COURSE it's real. why Not?

ok sorry, that is just a prejustice, but I don't think this is real.
I mean, he just pops out all of a sudden and makes something that is believed to be impossible. I never head his name before, and I'm here since the beginning. For me he's just a faker.

Prove me that I'm wrong and I haven't said anything, but until now, I'm a bit skeptic. Oh and sorry again about that prejustice.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-24
 » spain

... But if you think about it, Spain is the country of pirates (literal pirates, you know the "Me steal your boat so that I can steal your loot! Now gimme boat, arrghh, or i shooty you with my AK 47". And I'm sure we can agree that that one alejandro guy "randomly" popped up and hacked the PSP quite well. Besides, the slim just came out, so if anything, if his concept is real, he's faster than Alejandro!

And another example, David Court comes from Scotland... As we all know, Scots are extremely kind people who are NEVER NEVER in a pissed off mood... ;P

(So yeah, we can't just judge on a country. Besides, most Poles that I've met were very, very nice. And all of them loved video games. Also, if they like "stealing, copying, and pirating things", modding a slim battery is only natural to them, as it will facilitate stealing, copying and pirating UMDs/ISOs on a slim :P

Furthermore, I think America is the number one country that deals with piracy (the software kind, not the boat kind). We just do it secretly, other countries do it openly.

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 2007-10-24
 » I know

Yeah I understand your point. Actually in the first part I was kidding a bit :p

What I mean, is that (for me) it looks just a bit unserious. The first thing what he does is to show everybody how great he is because he hacked a Slim Battery. So far, nobody came nearly to this point and it's not based on some new discovery or something. He just enters he Hombrew scene and BAM! -- he makes Pandora Slim battery. It looks like he wants just some attention. ( i think you know what I mean)

 » its legit

i would say that this is a legit one, and its not fake video presentation, unlike others who edited their own video too much, well its just the mere fact that guy must show to all of us how it is been done after that all will believe polish people was ever first beaten spainiards, russians, chinese or even americans, sometimes we must accept this facts, coz its all for the benefit of us without this kind of people psp hacking wont grow...so we just stay put and wait for now if he'll be able to teach this trick, those accuse too much just ask the man on how he have done it.... period.
