The PlayStation Portable - Image 1

They did it with the PS2, and another company was able to do it with their handheld (read: the Nintendo DS lite). With the PSP not being THAT portable, it's not a surprise people are clamoring for a "slim" or "lite" version of Sony's contender in the handheld market. And with rumors of an official "upgrade" circulating, it's also not hard to speculate on what the new and improved Playstation Portable would look like.

Enter Games Radar and their take on the Playstation Portable "Lite". While it'd certainly be nice for Sony to improve on the PSP's features (i.e. better screens, better button layout, a new analog stick, built-in flash memory) they say that the actual update would only focus on giving the rather bulky handheld a sleeker, slimmer casing. This prediction stems from the Slim PlayStation 2 - it didn't actually offer anything else other than the fact that it was smaller than the original by a considerable amount.

While this seems realistic, we can't help but point to Nintendo's take on the "Lite" treatment. Not only did the Nintendo DS Lite get some serious trimming, it was also blessed with bigger screens, a new brightness setting, and a revised button layout. It's also worth mentioning that the DS Lite, when closed and not in use, can easily fit into pockets (usually not recommended as a way of storage, but the point remains), staying true to it being "portable".

Different company policies aside, Sony'd be crazy not to take this opportunity to listen to what the fans want, and realize them onto its handheld - just like what Nintendo did. The slimmer casing would just be icing on the cake. And besides, if you're going to be re-inventing the PSP itself, why not go with the improvements?

Then again, that's just me. Now it's your turn, readers, to say what you think about the whole PSP Slim/2/Lite deal. Let us know by your comments!

Didn't the Slim PS2 featured a network built in adaptor?

Anyway if they only make a slimmer PSP and nothing else I am not getting a new one.

I bet that SONY will not change the flash memory format or do something drastic to stop homebrew (hardware wise) with their new PSP (IF they ever make one).

REASON: Homebrew is the #1 reason most people have bought the PSP! I know many people that bought the PSP with one sole purpose: To hack it.

Could care less... The only thing tempting about this is the fact that it may be upgraded hardware wise. If a second anolog and 8GB flash are not added, this will be a big waste of time. I will not be purchasing one unless it has not one but both of these upgrades. SONY better take this opertunity to improve the system instead of just making it smaller. Otherwise they will find that they are throwing money to the wind.

   Re: vipre77 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-29
» Okay, so you called it, but statements from sony are the official word

Sony already confirmed last summer than any system updates would simply be a refresh and and not a new system. Doesn't matter if you "called it" or not. Sony themselves already "called it" a long time ago, but people don't seem to listen very well.

Additional controls that some of you kiddies have been frothing over aren't gonna happen yet, so get over it already. Additional controls will only come when a whole new system is released. You can't make changes on that fundamental level on a system with integrated controls. They got away with it on the PS1 because the controllers were accessories and didn't require replacing the console itself. Yes, we know another joystick and second set of shoulder buttons are on your wish lists, but it's not gonna make it until a true PSP 2 gets released. This coming refresh is not going to be a PSP 2. It's going to be a repackaging of the same system. Sony compared the evolution to what Apple has done with their various Ipod generations. With the exception of the video Ipods, no new functionality or hardware has been introduced and even then it was just the addition of the video codecs and a bigger screen.

In short, anyone who thinks this refresh is going to be anything more than slimming down and reducing cost is a fool. They aren't "re-inventing" the PSP. That would imply a massive overhaul of the design, which may be desireable to those who haven't yet purchased a PSP, but it would be like committing Seppuku to those that already own PSPs because it would create a rift in compatibility between old and new machines which Sony isn't willing to commit to yet. The PSP is finally starting to come into its own and it would be stupid to sacrifice it to the gaming gods now because they would never have the chance to recoup the costs they've sunk on it. The refreshed product will be intended to decrease costs on the systems, increasing profitability, which will help them finally start to make some money on this platform. Throwing money at what would be considered a new system if new controls are added would be like starting all over again. No way is that gonna happen for at least another 2-3 years.

 » Ahem...

The PS2 sported faster drives, built in IR and an Ethernet Adapter.

Also, despite contrary belief, the DS does not have bigger screens, they're simply brighter.

I truly wouldn't be surprised if they improve the buttons/d-pad (perhaps make it more PS2-esque?) as well as making it slimmer and sleeker. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony added in some features. However, chances are they'll add in some small flash memory (maybe 4GB and 8GB?) as well as the ability to use SD cards (much like the PS3 can).

Re: ya know (Unregistered) - 2007-05-29
 » it is possible

they're just trying to reduce the manufacturing cost of the PSP itself, because there aren't any other corners for them to cut -- every sony user out there is concerned with the cost of their products. and with psp-ps3 connectivity growing bigger, they might even be planning a new bundle pack with this smaller PSP as the deal-sweetner.

» This is the way it needs to be anyways...

The screen is already big enough, so there is no improvement needed there anyways. The screen is already bright enough, so no improvement needed there. I can't imagine the controls getting any better than they already are..unless they alter the d-pad slightly to make it a little easier to use. They can't add a 2nd analog stick, as that would isolate millions of previous psp owners, and developers wouldn't develop for it anyways as they'd be afraid of all the previous psp buyers who couldn't buy it. At this point in the game, Sony wants to get their PSP down in price as much as they can, so throwing things like a camera/built in memory/etc is out of the question, as it would increase the price drastically (unless like 256mb of internal memory was added...which wouldn't be a major selling point anyways). Also, I already carry the thing in the pocket everywhere in the form it is now, so it is already portable. Making it thinner would probably make it harder to hold IMO...but who knows until it would happen. See, the PSP doesn't need to be redesigned because Sony did it right to begin with unlike Nintendo who came out with a bad design at first so they had to remake it....

   Re: Dodo - 2007-05-29
 » ..

Second analog stick doesn't have to work for existing PSP games. Only future games may use it. This way no one is left behind.

   Re: Vipre77 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-29
» You don't seem to get it...

Of course new games have no impact on existing games in terms of hardware compatibility. The problem is that people with older systems won't be able to play new games because they'd lack the new buttons. There'd be something like 20 million PSP's worldwide left behind. We're not exactly talking about a small group of users here. The PSP is not the nGage.

   Re: saber (Unregistered) - 2007-05-30
 » not exactly

the developers could simply make it so that the older psp owners would have to use the buttons instead of the second thumbstick.
   by stories - 2007-05-29
» They'll only make it smaller

It makes absolutely no sense for Sony to redesign and effectively create a "PSP 2" due to the existing PSP user based and relative youth of the PSP (smidge over 2 years). If they drastically redesign it, they will eliminate the existing PSP user base, which would be financial suicide. Developers are now figuring out how to best utilize the PSP's abilities and to toss a new version of the system which will have to be programmed separately for is simply disastrous. The only feasible design change is to have some built-in memory because storage is necessary to get nearly any function out of the unit. Getting rid of the UMD, 2nd analog stick, etc. will require a complete overhaul of the system games and effectively create a new system.

   Re: Dodo - 2007-05-29
 » ..

Personally I'd prefer more RAM than storage memory, if you're referring to that.

   Re: Vipre77 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-29
 » Duh...

Obviously, everyone would prefer to have more RAM (or even ROM, for that matter), but again, that would leave existing PSP owners out in the cold because any new software that would take advantage of that expanded system memory wouldn't work on older systems that lack said memory.

The only built-in additional memory that would even be conceivable to do at this point would be to serve as a sort of permanently installed memory stick, perhaps to use as a backup or exclusively for game saves while using your regular memory stick for storing media. This way, you don't lose your saved games when you swap your memory stick with music on it for your stick with homebrew or movies or whatever on it. A cheap 64MB flash chip would work adequately for most people if it were reserved exclusively for saved games and wouldn't drive costs up much at all. It'd probably cost them more to write support for such a configuration into the firmware.

» What I think they may do

First off I've heard several rumors about them using a slot-loading UMD drive since it would slim the system, lighten it and potentially make it a little more solid.

Second they could do a little tampering with the D-pad, the other buttons are fine on many of the older units and great on the newer unit's so there is no real need for an improvement.

The screen won't be getting brighter, they locked out the 4th level because of how quickly it drains the battery.
If we are lucky the redesign will sport a screen that is more visible in daylight which wouldn't need to be majorly different from existing PSP's in anything beyond that, though it would probably show colors slightly differently making it an interesting change.

It could come packed with the extended battery, unlikely but possible.

Built-in memory is unlikely, not only would it raise costs more then seems reasonable but it would harm their memory stick sales. Same reason why it wont support SD cards.

I don't see the overall size changing much, even with smaller boards there isn't enough room to justify them making it harder to grip without a clamshell design ala GBA SP and Sony has good reasons for staying away from a design that would increase weight and size overall.

One last thing I would like to see is slightly faster UMD read times, it could improve loading times by a few seconds while keeping the power consumption to about the same as the current drive.

   Re: Korlithiel - 2007-05-29
 » More thoughts for improvement

I forgot about the speaker problem.

I would like louder speakers, possibly better positions would work too but I want to be able to go for a run and hear my PSP without having to use headphones or earbuds since the PSP is too quite.
Another example of times I have issues hearing it is when I'm getting driven somewhere and a few of us are in the back seat trying to watch a movie and none of us can hear it since the sound of the traffic on the freeway is too loud at those speeds.
Final example, driving to and from school I find that I often want to listen to the music I have stored on my PSP but find that unless I have it sit on my chest using a camera strap then I can't hear it well enough while driving until I stop, this isn't a problem with just my car since I can't hear it when I'm traveling with others in their vehicles either.

» refresh rate and battery life...

Sony could increase the battery life and screen's refresh rate with the redesign. 4 hours battery life is not enough I'm afraid, and with the refresh rate on the current psp it's a real ***** to play thrrough dark/night scenes on a game :(

   Re: Korlithiel - 2007-05-29
 » Somewhat agreed

I doubt they could extend the battery life much but they could at least include the extended battery with it.

As for the the screens refresh rate, well I've heard enough complaints to agree it should be improved but I haven't noticed it enough to care that much.

   Re: Dodo - 2007-05-29
 » ..

I think they should just replace the 'standard' battery with an extended one anyway. It would be a great selling point if the new PSP boasted a couple more hours on full charge.

» The DS Lite had bigger screens than the Phat model?

That's news to me.

I'd like to see a better screen on the PSP - it's good as it is, but it can still be better. I've never had a problem with the battery life on the PSP, though, even when running apps at 333 Mhz. Not that a better battery would hurt or anything.

the person who wrote this is wrong about the ds lite, it has the exact same screen size as the original model, the only difference is the brightness levels.

I think they should include faster wifi maybe 802.11g instead of measily b. Also maybe improved speakers? but i doubt that.

   Re: wakka_wakka (Unregistered) - 2007-05-29
 » yeah

Support for at least ol' 802.11g would be a nice addition, even though I don't actually own a g router. I'm sure those who surf the internet a lot from their PSPs would like a boost in connection speed. Sony shouldn't want their precious (Smeagle-style?) PSP to be *too* out of date.

A boost to the speakers would also be cool.

   Re: Vipre77 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-29
» Unless you're internet connection is faster than 10Mbps

You won't see much, if any, improvement with web surfing or downloading by moving from 802.11b to 802.11g. Most people here in the US are lucky to have 2-6 Mbps internet connections which is well under the bandwidth that 802.11b offers. Going to 802.11g would really only help your performance when transferring data to or from your PS3 or other computers/devices on your local network. From what I understand, 11g uses more power than 11b does, so it would be a bigger hit on battery life if that's true.

   Re: Wicked_Insider - 2007-05-30
 » Agreed...

They do need to improve the wifi both in (Range) + (Speed) 10/100/1000 802.11g. Currently the PSPs onboard memory NAND Flash is too small, when surfing the net it chokes. Whats up with that? D-Pad sucks for fighter games. Sound is to low on high even when you cup your hands to direct the sound waves to your head. Second anolog stick doesn't have to cost more if it's just configured to control the X,O,Tri + Squ. buttons, but then it wouldn't really be a big deal then people want all their buttons without having to shave off half for a stick. I'd love a second anolog though. Screen res needs to be selectable when streaming video through the PS3 for optimal viewing and the screen glare.... damn!

» What I want in redesigned PSP

I don't want them to add too many unnecessary stuff and make it too expensive. I don't see the need for a built-in hard-drive, when you can get Memory Sticks of various capacity depending on your need.

What I really want in a new PSP is a second analog stick, and the existing screen to be turned into a touch screen. Now before you yell 'copycat', know that Nintendo didn't invent the touch screen and it is not their property. Just imagine playing games with a stylus on PSP's big screen. It totally beats DS's mediocre dual screens.

Apart from that, I think the PSP is just fine. I really hope they consider the possibility of a touch screen on PSP.
