Ó

I hate saying "take this with a grain of salt", but it's what all the popular kids do so I'll go ahead and add that disclaimer here. File this squarely under the rumor section, apart from the fact that it comes from Aint It Cool News (they don't do videogames very often) it's also from a new writer who claims to have been given the info by a source called "Proteus" (oooh! Clandestine!). Why someone high up would decide to just gift the kind of information every single gaming news outlet on the planet is looking to get their hands on to Aint It Cool is beyond me, but here's the word:

Here’s a bit of info that I chanced into the other day, from a rather well-placed source named Proteus. He CONFIRMED a few details that were already rumored around the Net.

Seems Sony’s current internal plans call for a release of a refitted PSP around Christmas this year. The device will, indeed, be streamlined (thinner), lighter, boast 4 gigs of memory and a camera. Proteus indicated Sony is having a hell of a time with PlayStation 3 on several fronts (between PS3’s Cell processor and its built-in Blu-ray DVD, cost effectiveness has pretty much gone out the window). Seems the ever-phantasmic PS3 may well be delayed until next year, with Sony’s reworked PSP being positioned as a lead-in to its release (in the same way Nintendo’s release of the oh-so-sexy DS Lite heralds the coming of Revolution).

The PSP redesign is entirely possible, although it would be a crying shame for those of us that jumped on the PSP bandwagon so early (the systems only now starting to get good games!), but then Sony is no stranger to repackaging their hardware (they did it with the PSOne and the PSTwo) to make it cheaper to produce, and the rumors have been swirling around the possibility for a while now, but who thought it would happen so soon?

This PS3 launching next year news is what's particularly hard to believe. Sony has constantly gone on record reaffirming a Spring launch, now, however unlikely that is it seems Sony would realise that they need to get the console out the door and in the North American and Japanese markets by Fall at the latest, a delay till next year would give Microsoft an almost definitely insurmountable lead and likely insure the cheaper Revolution second place in the market. This seems to be the going phrase at the moment, but Sony ain't that stupid!

That's the keyword. Personally I don't really believe the PS3 info, but we'll see.

 » I'll kill sony.

I'll really be pissed off, if Sony releases a second upgraded version of PSP.

I hope they wont re-release an upgrade for PSP. I HOPE!

 » Complete BS

The PS3 side of it is complete BS. The console will be released before 2007. Where and who gets it first is still unkown though. So someone will get a launch in 2007 as well.

 » 4 gigs???

Only 4 gigs? If an Ipod can have a 20gig harddrive and still be smalller than the PSP, then why cant the PSP too get a bigger flash or harddrive? 4 gigs is ok, but if you want to put lots of movies (and possibly homebrew) on it, you want more than that. I hope for a 60gig PSP

» I hope this is true

Man I hope we get an upgrade! I have the warranty through BestBuy that lets me trade in my old PSP if a new one comes out! Yay! Bring the new PSP!

 » This is good news

If this is correct and Sony starts making a new PSP... Then sony will stop making updates for the old PSP due to the new PSP Updates needing the module for the 4 gigs of memory. Also what if the 4 gigs is used for extra games on the PS3 or better yet OS support just like the PS3.

» Not on the dollar bill

I take everything Sony sez or supposedly sez with a grain of salt, after the *****load of lies and deciet they constantly spit its hard not too.

Legacy firmware would be nice, means it'll be defeatable once and no more learning curve.

 » But..........

I would have to say that there was just as much news that "sony went on record about" that said a release for PS3 was scheduled for christmas '06. To further support this, Bill Gates has been quoted as saying the Halo 3 release would coincide with the release of the Sony PS3. As we all know, Gates will not miss out on the lucrative Christmas season and wait till Christmas 07 to release this blockbuster.

As for the "PSP2" or whatever we're calling it, I don't see this making a Christmas release. That would put the re-release of the console (which in the end, it is primarily a gaming console) within less than 2 years of the original launch date. That seems a lil quick for such a pricey gizmo. Nintendo is the only company that seems to pull this stunt and I think that is only because they are so confident in the japanese market.

 » Meh

Seems like it's always getting bigger and better, or in the case of portable entertainment smaller to the point of not being able to hold it and more and more powerful. I hope they don't release a new psp. Just give attachments for the current one, that way people who want those features that have tons of money can get theirs. If people don't want a camera on a gaming system and they already have an "old" psp, they wouldn't buy it.

 » Better Games???

Seeing there might be a 4GB NAND onboard could this mean better games seeing that RAM was the big issue with the PSP....

hmm, did i just post an empty comment? oh well

i don't like the sounds of this, if there's a psp2 then i don't really care; i play far more homebrew than i do psp games or movies or anything. how could they possibly make better games? would they make them only for psp2? when it would have essentially the same specs as the psp but have a flash hd? don't be silly. just as the ds lite is selling well, so would a psplite...

the ps3 news is probably more of the same old rumour mongering, they've heard from a friend of a cousin who saw it written in a magazine which prints lies... it's always the same, it seems clear that barring a miracle sony won't get ps3 out in 'spring', but it also seems implausible that they would possibly wait until next year. I expect ps3 in japan around summer time, like july or june... but as i'm in the uk i won't get ps3 until some time next century.

Ichigo: I expect the NAND would take the place of or supplement the Memory Stick Duo...

I dont think they have overly limited memory, c'mon, look how much memory the PS1 and PS2 have - it just takes a bit of extra work and skill to give the extra oomph on a limited memory system (wrather than shove a UMD out the store and say "its not so good because we dont have enough memory"), especially for those programmers used to the astronomical memory found in todays gaming PCs.

As to the article, isnt the rumor like "delay of the official launch" not possibly serving Sony in the long run? I mean, it hasnt even been on a TV commercial yet and everyone is talking about it trying to figure out what is going down (especially Micro$oft :P)

If they really are going to make psp-2 they will do something to try to stop anything to be runable on the memory card. Not sure if they can be done but who knows... just like when they did slim ps2 they took out the access to put a HD on it. UMD copy is a lot harder to get for a lot of us so they think they can kill most of it (hey, don't take my word on it.. just my assumption so I am not going to start any rumor here... and honestly I don't know jack about any these technical details).

Bottom line is that I couldn't care less. I have more fun playing SNES zelda than any new PSP games. So if they are trying to kill homebrew I don't care about the new one... basically I don't care at all. Not gonna buy another one, not gonna upgrade and not gonna buy any UMD game/movies anyway.

PS3... on the other hand... errr.. still I don't care. By the time PS3 is out I'll have 2 kids already so I'll too busy babysitting then.

 » ...

I reckon the new PSP is just going to be the same as the PSP that's out. As in, still play the same games, but a few extra features and smaller, etc. Just like they did with PSOne and PSTwo - same gaming consoles as their counterparts, just smaller

 » psp2

Well it will be a pretty big improvement if they add 4 gigs of memory and a camera, and keep the price relatively the same...

 » psp2

well ive heard speculations that sony were bring out a new model, faster processor, bit more ram and the ability to play blu ray umds which therietically turn it into a ps2, When i heard this it did piss me off but then the new one will never beable to get cracked asmuch as the 1.5s so who cares in that respect

   by infraBLUEkid - 2006-03-14
 » Means nuthin to me

4 gigs? who cares? theyll prolly limit you to what you can put on it, ie, no eboots

the thing will probly have no ms input, so no hombrew, let sony do their thing, im happy with what i got

that is unless the bring out a dual analog version, then they could bern in hell
