Rumor: PSP-4000 in 2009, PSP2 later - Image 1The rumor mill has chucked out another one on the PSP 2, despite claims from SCEE boss David Reeves that "no, there are currently no plans for a PSP 2."

The rumor now goes that Sony will be introducing the PSP-4000, the successor of the PSP Brite, in late 2009. Its release will be followed with the the next-generation PSP 2 "later."

I admit, this is rather thin, even for a rumor, but it does show how mighty persistent talks of the PSP 2 is. Persistent rumors have a tendency to have a grain of truth. I won't say I believe it yet though.

Oh, and you probably already guessed, but Sony was already reached for comment today, but they gave their usual talk to the hand, "no comment on rumor and speculation" routine.

 » Surprising????

No not really. People doubted the 3000's existence and it ended up deing true and with the new hardware "features" of the 3000 I can see why.

Ah, a PSP2, that's all I care about. After the ballsing up of the 3000 model I don't really want another downgrade.

Heres hoping the PSP2 has internal storage, a second analogue nub (or something better, they're a pain to use).

   Re: StingBlah - 2008-12-16
 » yea second analogue nub

wouldn't work at all on the psp. People area lways blindly asking for it, but they dont realize on a device as small as the psp it won't be comfortable to move both thumbs at the same time, since the psp is basically held together by your index finger and your thumb, it could also cause the psp to fall!

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2008-12-17
 » no

there are many mods that have nubs on both sides
it would work on PSP2
not current PSP
people will start to feel alienated if companies start making games to work with dual nub models unless you use triangle, square, circle and X bottons emulate second nub
to ease holding they could even add a dual shock controller type shape

   Re: raggedjimmi - 2008-12-17
 » -

Exactly. I don't want a second nub on the PSP1, but the 2 yes. I've worked as a product and hardware designer in the past and it's very possible to make it work.

But chances are there won't be a second nub but they will likely add a touchscreen, since the 2 best selling devices in their markets (2 markets the PSP1 tries at too) both have touchscreens.

» Just wait for PSP 2 before jumping onto PSP 4000 from PSP-1000.

I better not buy the PSP-3000 nor PSP-4000 unless it has substantial changes and doesn't have LCD "features".

PSP 1000 - PSP 2 Should be an AWESOME upgrade!

 » PSP-1000 FTW!

My Phat PSP will own PSP-2000 - PSP-X000

Sony might be already on their sketch boards for "PSP 2", because Nintendo's DS versions are getting better and better. (From DS to DS Lite, and now DSi)

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2008-12-17

I wouldn't say Nintendo's handhelds are getting better.

More like, they have more useless features, just like the PSP 3000.

Sure...any sources or facts to back up this rumor? No?
I thought so.
This is just as bogus as Halo 4 coming being an exclusive to the PS3.

   Re: dudash - 2008-12-16

anybody can say "ooo i heard theres a new psp-4000 coming in 2009"
i could just as easily say that i work for sony,
and its not going to come out in later 2009,
but in mid 2009.

psp 1000 - Games (still waiting)
psp 2000 - Games (still waiting)
psp 3000 - Games (still waiting)
psp 4000 - Games
psp 2 - Games

Basicly make a the psp something more than a paperweight!

ps. touch screens are gay

   Re: shogunu - 2008-12-16
 » WTF?

Except for more memory, what the ***** are you going to do with Bluetooth (battery drainer and expensive tech with no real usage in a gaming console), touch screen (a poor substitute for buttons with little to no games that truly benefit from it's usage) and TWO cameras (both really crappy ones, for sure).

   Re: StingBlah - 2008-12-16
 » touchscreens are indeed gay

but what if they just had like two touch sensitive strips at both ends of the screen? that way you could like access items and shizz in an RPG by touching the ends, or maybe type faster by splittin the psp's current keyboard on the ends!

   Re: GraySoul - 2008-12-17
 » great idea

ya that would be good as accessing items by pressing buttons can sometimes be a pain in some RPGs..

   Re: shogunu - 2008-12-17
 » @Sting

Touch pads, that's a great idea!

1st of all, a touch pad is more sturdy than a touch screen since you can press it as hard as you want without fear of damaging the precious screen beneath.

2nd, since you're not confined to use specific materials required to see the screen below. Which would make the touch pad highly sensitive and precise.

3rd, with touchpads you might even replace the analog nub(s) (personally, i have a love-hate relationship with the PSP's nub :D).

ps3- games

- Longer range WiFi.
- IrDa.
- Less restrictive media compatability/playback.
- Keyboard/screencover combo.
- In-game XMB.
- More PS3 Integration.
- Built-in camera/microphone.
- Taser (very handy).
- Ability to rename files in the XMB.
- Calculator + notepad (should have been the first thing added on the first PSP).

Personally I wouldnt grab a PSP2 on launch day, they'll rework it within a year and thats when all the worthwhile games will come out. plus it'll be cheaper by then.

   by emcp - 2008-12-16
 » MMM

what they should do, is stop wasting time with new revision psps, as a retail psp game will most liekly have to be compatible with all psps, to make a profit, the only use in upgrading the psp is apps, such as skype which is wasted time

FOR ***** SAKE USE THE SERIAL PORT, TO GET ANOTHER ANALOGUE AND LET FPS RULE,
if for some reason serial isnt practical use the usb

 » Well think about this

I think what alot of you want is called a Ultra Mobile PC they have a touchscreen bluetooth camera and they can do a hell of alot more. PSP was great but... oh wait that was four years ago. and as far as PSP 3000 and 2000 THEY BOTH are terrible and a waste of sony's money and our money/time. Plus the games all suck! except one or maybe 2. compared to the level of todays gaming. Outdated technology needs to stop being wrapped up like new and shoved down our throats. But we do live in a capitalistic society so I don't see any change in Sight...

   Re: atomike14 - 2008-12-16
 » ultra mobile PC

thing is the PSP is competing with the iphone and ipod touch. it needs features to draw in a larger crowd to be successful. maybe not features that arent gaming centric but the new DS has the right idea. PSP2 will likely have a tilt sensor etc. basically Sony needs to throw in features that can be used to make mobile gaming more fun.

I think the PSP 2 should come with 2 analogs, one touch screen (just like the PSP 1's except touch), a better browser with built in ad blocker, support for 3rd party apps and games (like homebrew but official), 802.11g or n, a built in flash drive, a slot loading umd drive, and at least 128MB ram and 1GHz processor.

   Re: smartdude - 2008-12-16
 » think differently

you need to stop thinking about all the things that would be nice to have in a PSP at the moment and start thinking about what will still be a decent handheld 3-5 years into the product life cycle when the majority of people will begin to buy the product. expect more dang it! oh and lets face it downloadable games is the way to go, again, think about the future of games and future technologies and trends. lose the UMD! ad a hard drive!

   Re: Justingraziano - 2008-12-16
 » ...

First of all a hard drive is not the way to go in a mobile device like a PSP. They are big, waste a lot of battery, and slow. Why do you think the new iPod's are able to be so small? Because there is no HDD. Second, downloading games will not be major for a long, long time. Currently, many people still have 1-3MBPS DSL connections or less, some with even 56K dial up. How could they download games? Sony would be cutting out thousands, if not millions of possible buyers if they dont include some sort of media drive.
   by Metal Jody - 2008-12-16
 » yea

PSP2: replace disk drive with a hard drive (16-32 GB) [if no HDD, then TWO memorystick slots] more added RAM, be able to clock 444 MHz. An extra analog nub would be awesome, but how much could be asked for? :/

   Re: Justingraziano - 2008-12-16
 » ...

As you can see with all major game consoles, they have a serious problem with putting a decent amount of RAM in. The PS3 has a mere 256MB of main RAM and it's not even 3 years old. Chances are, if your lucky, by the time the PSP 2 comes out (probably will be planned for release in late 2009 but then Sony will delay it till 2011) it will have 128MB RAM, if even.

 » Sony Anti-Hacker Stratagy

Nothing is un-hackable. That said, because of the hacked PSP's ability to play pirated games, Sony is losing money and game software designer's faith. The overlying approach is to produce multiple PSP models each with enhanced security measures and firmware adapted to the current hacker exploits. What this does is cut the PSP hacking community into smaller segments. Some are using the Phat. Some on the Slim. Others on the Brite. And the other incarnations to follow.

What we see is a fragmented community of hackers not working for a common goal... but many different custom firmwares and different PSP models. Each time money and time must be spent to get the new model and hack it. Then all the Homebrew applications and games must be tailored to this new Firmware. This takes time. This separates the collective more. Each time Sony adapts, making hacking more and more involving and difficult.

Will Sony defeat the Hackers. No. Thats like saying they can defeat the human spirit. That will never happen. But they can make the hacking experience increasingly difficult, expensive, and time consuming. All the while they reward those whom upgrade with Official Firmware and buy new models with small improvements.

At this point I have lost so much hope for the PSP. How long has the PSP been around? 2005! Where is the Keyboard? The US GO!CAM and GPS? Why has there not been an official PDF/MS File Reader Program? The list of have-nots could take pages. Why is this powerful and cool device not using but a percentage of it's true capability? How could Sony be that ignorant? If capitalism is Social Darwinism... survival of the fittest company... then soon Sony may find it self selected for extinction.

   by 73N5H1 - 2008-12-17
 » ...

the only things that they got right with the PSP 3000 was the internal mic and anti-glare coating... there wasn't anything wrong with the LCD to begin with, it didn't need a "new and improved" one.

As for a PSP2, a harddrive would KILL the battery life, and I prefer removable media, since you can upgrade your storage space as technology improves, but I wish they would add a second memory card slot so we could have more space without having to switch cards.

More RAM would be nice as well as a built in camera.

Before they add a second analog nub, they need to work out the placement on the first one. The location is *****ing horrible on it. Anyone that has played with the nub for any period of time knows this. It makes your thumb cramp after only about 10 mins or so.

Also need to make it USB chargeable at ALL times, even when it's powered off. That's been the problem with Sony from the beginning, software and hardware-wise... adding new ***** before they fix the problems with the ***** that they already have.

 » Rumor Mill

I heard a rumor stating there's a fighting game in development that pits every Grand Theft Auto's cast member against Saint's Row's.

I also heard that Metal Gear Solid 5 is to be completely cell-shaded.

I also heard that Lara Croft has been tested positive for steroids and male hormone abuse.

Jeez... Rumors are rumors.

 » 2nd analog nub?

I rather see L2 and R2 triggers... if not it should at least connectible with the ps3 joystick so that the triggers work and have most of the dual shock function...

Why make a bothersome 2nd nub?
