Rumor: North American GPS still en route for this year - Image 1

GPS support for the PSP in North America has been a long time coming, but a report from CES 2009 says that the device is still on track for a release this year. No date or price details have been released, and no press release has been sent since CES, so for now, we'll have to tag this as rumor.

It's been months since we last heard of it, and it's been available in Japan and Europe for a while now (years). Anyone still hyped up about it? It's been way too long since the product was first revealed that I find I have a hard time getting excited over it again. This isn't to mention that the homebrew community has MapThis and PSP-Maps.

I'm still looking forward to the release, even if I'm not overly hyped up about it. The gadget's an amazing device that allows 2D and 3D maps, and also provides directions to get to places. Last we heard, Sony was also looking to release GPS games after the product is released.

 » To Late

Silly SONY ... I USED to be all geared up and ready to shell out the CASH for this (like 2 X-mas's ago) ... but now

WHY?!?!

I already have GPS on my phone ...

Sorry Sony you wasted your time trying to block HB and now you've lost an actual PURCHASE!

PS I do use MapThis on my PSP from time to time though ... it's nice to be able to scroll an whole map and not just "your current area"

» Too little, way too late

An application that has been out in Japan for over 2 years now, really isn't something the Western world is looking forward to anymore. Especially if it's a technology that has been incorporated in several other systems by now, making it completely redundant on the PSP. Unless Sony would get a little creative or keep up with its plans to use GPS to track and find other PSP users.

Well i heard that the camera got canceled for the US so maybe the same will happen for the GPS.

Anyway i hope i get the EU version atleast now that a north america map pack was released recently and if we were able to create our own maps that would be even better.

 » probably so.

they said the camera got canceled for US because most phone cameras have better quality. well since almost every phone in US has a GPS, i see this one going bye-bye also.

 » well

Sony should still release the North American Map software for those of us who DID buy it overseas.

» i hope this one is still coming

It would be nice to have this for driving. thats about it i think.
it would be also nice if it would give you internet anywhere for skype users to make phone calls anywhere. haha, like that would happen.

» Was looking for this in 2007

Its now 2009 its too late for me. I picked up a Magellan could not wait. Even an email to Sony requesting an availability date and they could not commit. Lost my business for the GPS.

» lol even the iphone has it already. :P

Well, if you're all planning to not buy it when it comes out, what will you do if it actually did come.

I lost interest in this already since I already got a GPS because this took forever.

...and the cam? Ha! Forget it.

» It cut off my message...

I ended up getting a Nikon D60 for my birthday. Now I lost all reasons to even bother getting the cam. My phone would probably have a better quality. If they do release the cam here in the US and they release some sort of video chat system that can work not only from PSP to PSP but to PSP to PC then I'm getting it. (No, GoMessenger can't do that. It's only sending a video message...not a video call. Feel free to prove me wrong if I missed something.) :P
