Sony PlayStation Portable - Image 1Would you buy a PSP armed with a security feature that makes it hack proof?

According to Nadclovek from PSP-Spot (sourcing an EB Games Regional Manager in Calgary, Canada), new shipments of PlayStation Portables may sport higher firmware (4.xx) and retail at 169.99 CAD or around US$ 153.67. This might not be good for PSP sales to say the least.

Nadclovek says:

Sony was sending out Emails to its Commercial Retailers that all new PSPs to be sent out will have 'Downgradable Prevention' built right into them. All new PSPs to be shipped out as of next week Friday, May 18th, will be a higher firmware, 4.xx (specifics were not released), but they were promised to include new security features to prevent hacks and downgrades. Apparently this is one of their first steps to start focusing on the PSP again, instead of diverting all attention to the PS3.

The report also mentions that it might have implications in North American PSP sales. While we doubt that it'll be the end of PSP hacking as we know it, but it's a sobering thought to say the least. For now though, we're still sticking this in the rumor bin until further notice. Stay tuned.

I work at harvey normans (all you yanks and poms probably wonder where that is) its an australasian company.anyways back to the point, I sell a fair few psp's and noone has ever asked me about downgrading theyve just taken a psp (even though all our psp's are ta082 with firmware 2.71) The only person who has ever asked for a downgradable psp was me lol. I got myself the last white 2.60 psp non ta082 (this was back when we'd only had the 2.71 downgrader lol

 » hmmm

this is just gonna increase used sales at like gamestop where you can still find < 2.60FW

i got a 1.50FW there and upped it to 3.03OE-C and i'm doing just fine right now :D

Does anything other than LocationFree and PS1 even need that high, aren't games still only requiring 2.80 at the highest (ie. Port Ops)?

By the time a game comes out for a 4.xxFW, it'll be hack by then, but until that happens, who really cares?!

   Re: Chris (Unregistered) - 2007-05-09
 » bleh

Even DAX is saying there isn't that much of change from 3.10 to 3.30 and 3.40. Most of the new features have already been done in the OE's like higher res videos and PAL PS1 support. So is 4.xxFw really gonna bring anything to the table, or just a useless upgrade, that makes it temp. unhackable, and stupid people will still upgrade and ask questions on here like "can i downgrade yet??" knowing full well you can't.

 » hmm

yeah all games are 2.81 right now.. but what if the up-coming games already ask for 4.XX? we're screwed my friend ;)

the things is sony should promote custom firmware enablin us to do the things we can.... but to them its all prfit. if they embraced the custom firmware then they could improve sales on all consoles. not jus that but they can also make the psp store free so that ppl would nt turn to piracy to play the games thay want. for once they should think of wot the consumer wants rather then their pockets. the UMD games should stay as they are... but jus look wot u can do a psp to customize it.. its incredible... they should promote this so they can improve sales of the console.... its only a matter of time b4 some cracks the new firmware cause no matter how secure u try tomake it everythin has flaws...obviously im not sayin that roms and emulators should be legalised but home brew games are kool it lets ppl go further and help them make hobbies n *****.... wot ima tryin to say is they ashould recruit ppl like Dark_AleX and Fanita to help make firmwares that are wot consumers want not try n keep the firmware ***** and boring or they're gonna loose out on sales big time.... UMD'z should be cheeper aswell

According to this recent article by BBC; http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6397797.stm

Sony claim that they are not afraid of homebrew apps but are concerned with piracy. It's true that this is a major problem but then, couldn't sony just find a way to disable piracy on the psp and still enable HEN???

Another thing is that hackers like Noobz, Team C+D, Dark Alex; they claim that it is our decision to do with what we want. They just come to provide us with the true potential of the PSP. It is all based on business ethics.

"I think it is up to users to make the correct decisions about how to use my software"

Dark Alex

Anyhow, my point is.. Sony should be thinking of ways to work together with the PSP Hackers then to go against them. Trust me, doing this will raise PSP sales. Unfortunely, they only care about their profits rather then consumer's opinions.. unlike other companies.

» PS3 homebrew "Ok", not so for PSP

Thank you Sony for further clarifying this rather ironic statement of allowing Linux homebrew on the PS3, but not on the PSP. If it is really that much of a concern, why not develop a fully functional Linux distro for the PSP?

 » psp or games

the main reason sony makes money from psp is games and not the system

i can pretty well assure you its costs $100+ to make while the games cost liek $1 probably (think of a cd and a plastic cd case)and games cost 20-50 bucks so they make 50 bucks on the consol and 20-50 bucks for each game...

» but i even have games

i cant stand people who would download like full psp or ps1 games to put on there psp but with emulators like nesterj those are exeptible in my opinion since they dont make them anymore and even if they did theyd gain little profit

Downgradable Proof? Why not just say "Downgrade-proof" works a lot better.

But yeah. Just what could Sony hope to do to make such a thing? Sounds like just another pointless scare tactic to me. Essentially "You've pushed us to do this".

The only good thing about the PSP is the ability to put homebrew stuff on there. If anything, they're hurting themselves by doing this.

And of course, that's all setting aside that no matter how well-protected anything is, if it runs, it can be cracked. It's a simple fact that's been proven time and again, and not just with the PSP. Perhaps Sony should acknowledge that fact first and foremost before anything else.

Honestly. I don't know how many of you people just jumped on here and said:

"oh em gee sony you suck my nuztz! you should give up the fight! you can't winz! unhackable dubba tee eff! so was gay ta-082!!"

We don't need ANYONE to come on here and start spouting all of that bull. Anon was the only one who said anything remotely intelligent. The only reason sony is doing this is to try to reassure third party devs and to keep them making games. If they thought that all of their games would be pirated the day after they were released, why would they make them? They would lose millions.

Unless you have something intelligent to say, and not about how much Sony sucks and how they should just let hackers do whatever they want, don't post here.

(And no, I am not a hack-hater. In fact, I love my 3.40 OE-A CFW PSP and all of the homebrew games and apps on it, and I don't want Dark_AleX or the Noobz team or anyone to stop what they're doing.)

Sonys last shot to beat the DS, is to support homebrew. Other than that, The DS is going to win for sure. ( Specially with Pokemon Diamand and Pearl out. )

OMG pokemon I'm going crazy over here just thinking about Pokemon. I think I'm going to start killing people like crazy. The voices just won't go away I have to play Pokemon otherwise I'm going to kill myself I swear to god. I can't live without Pokemoonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

LOL just kidding. But seriously who the hell gives a damm about Pokemon. It's the same thing over and over again. They just add a 100 more Pokemons and a couple more minor improvements and that's it. Why even bring Pokemon into this. We are talking about the PSP here if we want to talk about kiddy games we'll go over to the DS section.

hmm, i have a small question. there still isn't a downgrader for 3.10, 3.11, 3.30, 3.40 with our usual boards. why are you guys so sure that this new ''unhackable'' board/firmware will be hacked? also, why do you think the sony guys are stupid and they forget stuff for hackers to exploit? those things are left there:P also, don't forget that hamster's rear is fluffy. :thums up:
