Sony PlayStation Portable - Image 1Would you buy a PSP armed with a security feature that makes it hack proof?

According to Nadclovek from PSP-Spot (sourcing an EB Games Regional Manager in Calgary, Canada), new shipments of PlayStation Portables may sport higher firmware (4.xx) and retail at 169.99 CAD or around US$ 153.67. This might not be good for PSP sales to say the least.

Nadclovek says:

Sony was sending out Emails to its Commercial Retailers that all new PSPs to be sent out will have 'Downgradable Prevention' built right into them. All new PSPs to be shipped out as of next week Friday, May 18th, will be a higher firmware, 4.xx (specifics were not released), but they were promised to include new security features to prevent hacks and downgrades. Apparently this is one of their first steps to start focusing on the PSP again, instead of diverting all attention to the PS3.

The report also mentions that it might have implications in North American PSP sales. While we doubt that it'll be the end of PSP hacking as we know it, but it's a sobering thought to say the least. For now though, we're still sticking this in the rumor bin until further notice. Stay tuned.

» Sony needs to rethink their marketing.

Really, the Sony products are selling so well because of the possibilities you get when you hack them. The only thing is, the guys responsible for marketing (and possibly ken kutaragi) haven't noticed it yet. And still, TA-086 was considered un-downgradeable to firmwares less than 2.5. So this new mobo will probably get hacked in no time. Those Sony dudes must have really big balls to risk their sales like that.

All sony does is make the psp so that there is no information of a fw lower than 4.xx. There fore the only thing to do to the new psp is to hack them where they start, 4.xx. Knowing Sony, they will probably make a mistake and there will be a door left wide open, if we can find that door and exploit it.

They are trying to encourage companies to produce games for their system. With all the system sellers coming out (GoW, Final Fantasy Series, and GT), they have to get some help from third party sellers to help ride that wave, by making good selling games. Software sales for the psp sucks because of iso loaders. Why would anyone NOT try to stop the bleeding.

 » So what's new?

How is this anything new? I think we could all agree that every new firmware has had "downgradable prevention" built in. I mean, it's not like they ever released a firmware that gave you the option of downgrading to an earlier one. When units started shipping with 3.XX firmware, I'm sure Sony felt they were including "downgradable prevention," but we all have seen what happened there.

I don't see how this email report should cause us any more trepidation. Our beloved hackers probably see this as another exciting challenge, designed simply for their cracking pleasure. So to Sony, I simply say "meh", to our hackers I bid good luck, and to my fellow gamers, I say don't panic, just be patient.

   Re: SONYLOZL (Unregistered) - 2007-05-09
 » Blargh

YARR! Sony is ANGRY! I bet the "preventable downgrade" function in their next PSP will be.... a non-upgradable FW ROM! Seriously. That's the ONLY way that's 100% foolproof. But even then, hacks can be found and HB can load from RAM.

So then I wonder, will there be the regular PSPs and then a more "secure" PSP edition?
by Anonymous Coward Who Really Has An Account (Unregistered) - 2007-05-09
 » Riiiight....

That's what they said with nearly every firmware version past 1.5, but they especially said it with 2.0, 2.01. Every version past that were considered "un-downgradeable". I hope that WHEN (not if) we hack their so called "downgradeable prevention" PSP units, they see that they've lost and have been and finally give up the fight.

Wow if they do that it's gonna SUCK for sales. like 70% of what makes the PSP is the homebrew hacks and all, because it brings out WAY more of the PSP's potential that Sony won't allow us to see for whatever reason.

Sony, let the grudge go, yes, devs made several awesome breakthroughs that threw Sony to the ground, but whether you know it or not it's HELPING sales of your PSP console. Only reason I bought mine was because I could also downgrade it to play homebrews and stuff, and that's the only reason my sis bought one as well... So stop and think a minute Sony. This very bad move will kill your console IF our devs can't beat it again, and if they can, you'll be lucky.

funny when you talk about sony losing sales when all you people using hacked psps download the games for free. i know at least 6 people at work alone that have hacked psps and hard drives filled with every single game that has come out on the system. they get them the second the iso appears online and never spend a penny on the system besides the initial purchase. i really hope they do finally get this thing hack proof. would be nice coming here and seeing it a ghost town.

This wont be "Non- downgradable" either

Re: you guys (Unregistered) - 2007-05-09
» it's not going to reduce their sales at all

people who use homebrew/hacking are a small minority of game players. there will still be tons of people who will go out and buy psp's after this, and play retail games, not even knowing about the homebrew scene. it will probably increase their sales, due to a price drop. $153 is pretty cheap for such a nice system.

But yeah seriously... this is no different from any other new firmware version. i remember back in the day when 1.0 and 1.5 was all there was, and we were terrified that 1.52 would never be cracked.

   Re: Solidus (Unregistered) - 2007-05-09
 » Answer

The answer is pretty simple. To warn them. They are starting to catch on via reports and other information that people are downgrading their units and if successfull rely on the store's return policy to simply get another one with no reprocussions. Now SONY is telling them about their newer models so that they are informed about how secure it is and that if it gets returned it's probably not from a brick as it wont be that mainstream to say its been hacked and bricked. Now when we figure out how to downgrade/hack the damn thing sony will then call them again and tell them it's been hacked and warn them about it. Of course it is still up to your store's disgretion whether or not to take the unit back. (WALMART will but only for 90 days after date of purchase with reciept.) Without your reciept you can just lie about when you got it and take your chances.
Anyway I hope this clears things up a little bit. If my message appears incoherant. It's probably cause I havn't been to sleep in over 48 hours.....

i bought a another "K" 2.71 firmware psp from a busy walmart just this week... if they have that psp still, then i highly doubt they will be getting some 4.XX fully stocked in their stores any time soon. as far as the undowngradable part goes... i think some input about Dark_Alex can straighten out what exactly sony can or cannot do

"Apparently this is one of their first steps to start focusing on the PSP again, instead of diverting all attention to the PS3."

^^ what a bunch of bull....... my ps3 is collecting so much dust i dont think that would be the case if they had actually been placing all their attention to the ps3.....
ive bought 4 games...... and Resistance is the only one i even play the rest are JUNK along with the firmware.......
as for the psp damn im glad i have 2 with custom firmware.
BIG THANKS to DARK ALEX and his custom firmwares, PSP wouldnt be near as cool as it is without him! THANKS!

I went to a Best Buy here in canada and the firmware on the displayed PSP was 3.40.. you had a 2.71, lucky you.. but it wont be for too long. Besides that.. F-U Sony! and they were saying that 2.50/6 was unhackable! "try to hack it, and you'll bricked it" they were saying loll okay true.. its because of GTA but a downgrader was still made and kernal acces was found.. what Sony didnt expected to happened, did happened July 1st of last yr with a 2.50-2.60 downgrader and then with a 2.71 and 3.03 downgrader.. so yeah its possible! ;)
