Gamestop: Pre-order Patapon 2 get Patapon 2 demo - Image 1

"But Priestess Meden, we left all our UMDs back in the previous island!"

An intriguing rumor if there ever was one: sources say that Patapon 2 will only be released as a digital download in North America. If this proves true, Sony's move to a digital-media heavy direction is now taking shape - not to mention fanning flames on that rumorrific UMD-less PSP 2.

The rumor comes from a very reliable source of Ars Technica's. They say the game will be made available as a digital download on the PSN for US$ 15. But here's the juicy bit: the game will still be sold on retail shelves, complete with box and all. It's just that the game boxes won't have UMDs in them. They'll have download coupons.

Here's something else: SRP for the retail version, US$ 19.99. Guess it costs you about five bucks if you wanted a physical box and game manual to go with your download. Note that you can also purchase the download code via online portals of the usual retailers.

Again, this is strictly rumor. When Ars Technica contacted Sony for a comment, a spokesperson gave this:

Regarding digital distribution for Patapon 2, nothing's been announced on our end. We'll keep our ears to the ground and we'll drop you a line immediately if we hear anything.

Patapon 2 for the PSP will be marching out for North America on May 5.

**Update**

This rumor has been confirmed by Sony.

The only problem I have with the the whole thing is memory space. I only have a 1 gig card at the moment, If I wanted to expand my library I would have to buy the game AND a larger card.

I can't really see this being true, but I guess we'll know the truth soon. If it is true then I'll just import the Europe version. I like UMDs, it's one reason why I buy PSP games.

This wouldn't be the first time a game released with physical media in other regions, but only on PSN in the US. Echochrome anybody?

I have to agree with the disk space issue, though... On a console, a GB costs far less than when it's a memory stick... Even if you ARE using a MicroSD converter. Swapping memsticks is somewhat annoying as well. Likely one of the reasons they're hesitating to go 'Digital Only' is the limitation of 'disk space'.

Not to mention the fact that their current delivery system requires you to have DOUBLE the space needed for the game itself to be available for 'installation' of the game. The recent FFVII release on the Japanese PSN would require you to have 3.4GB of free space on your card just to download it. They'll have to make that a lot more efficient before making the transition.

I have always hated the fact that you need double the space to install a game, but if you use the online PC PSN Downloader, you don't need twice the space.

Ah, good point. I've been so pleased to leave behind my PC for PSN downloads that I had forgotten that. :D

Actually you need an extra $5.00 to get the case and manual when you round it off.

I downloaded this game forever ago from espalpsp, and it certainly has no UMD o.0
