PSP - Image 1News flash, folks! Or rather, rumor flash. Word's circulating around the web that Sony is conducting a survey asking gamers about potential hardware and software features for a new PSP. So they say.

A Kotaku tipster sent in the details of the survey, and it showed that the participants had to rank of features that are not available on the current models of the PSP. Eye-catching would be the following items: touchscreen functionality, built-in GPS features, Bluetooth wireless support and internal data storage.

Here's also a list of some of the supposed possible PSP features in the survey:
  • Was smaller, yet retained most of the current PSP's screen size
  • Offered social networking functionality on the XMB
  • Included a keyboard for easer internet browsing and communication
  • Offered Bluetooth wireless support for easy pairing with other devices
  • Had a touch screen
  • Had an improved screen for more dynamic graphic displays
  • Offered the ability to find others near you who want to connect for online gaming
  • Offered an e-comic/book download service through the PlayStation Network
  • Included a hard drive for memory storage
Don't rejoice just yet, alright? This is all hearsay right now. We'll keep you posted as we get more updates on this.

What is that on top of the PSP? It looks like it has an antenna, so it can't be a cam.

1seg TV Tuner adapter (only works in Japan). It's old.

Why the hell would I want a touch screen?

I'm fine with the PSP as it is now, maybe the bluetooth thing would help out but I don't know.

   Re: Techni - 2009-01-14
 » ...

I agree no touchscreen, but I'd love everything else on that list.

   Re: Sythun - 2009-01-15
 » ...

Having a touchscreen would make it harder to play since you already have both hands busy with the rest of the controls and putting your fingers on the screen will probably hinder your view.

SO NO TOUCHSCREEN PLEASE! :)

   Re: icypsp - 2009-01-15
 » Agreed 100%

Touch screen is like sex, it just complicates things. If they do include which they better not. It must be BETTER than the ipod touch's screen.
Sony should allready know what we want. Look at the mods (duh) lol.

   Re: emcp - 2009-01-15
 » mmm

while i initially agree no touchscreen

touchscreen can be useful, especially the way sony wants the psp to go

theyre going online now, and other ome unusual concept games like loco rocco and patapon

physics game would be next if it had touch screen o i do want touch screen,

but can i add we want all the things we wanted for the first psp,

screw GPS, how th ***** is that useful for a game/media handheld it is totally irrelevant

I WANT MY *****IN SECOND ANALOGUE STICK FFS, CANT BELIEVE THAT WASNT MENTIONED

FPS WIHTOUT SECOND ANA IS DIFFILCULT, MANY HARDCORE GAMERS ARE FPS, PSP IS CONSIDERED HARDCORE UNLIKE THE *****TY DS

yes touch screen but only for menus and keyboard not game play.

I'll take whatever I can get. The PSP is my favorite handheld so everything helps. However a keyboard would be great since I use Opera to search online and chat.

 » they don't listen

Out of all those features, they STILL have not gotten it in their head that people would want a second analog nub. it'd be so easy to make yet they have a choice from every other feature ever mentioned for the psp, except its own rocket ship.

   Re: marcosatti1 - 2009-01-15
 » !

I know!!! How do they not spend a couple of dollars just to add a 2nd nub in there?!?! Its not hard, doesn't take up much space.... So what is the problem?

   Re: SikWitThiz - 2009-01-15
 » I agree

It would be nice to have a second nub with a mini rumble to the system. I know know some people will complain about the battery life but if they made it right and at least sold the system with a 3600mAh battery. That should be efficient enough. As for touch screen, it would be nice as long as that doesn't become the main feature on the system eliminating the use of the nubs. I also would love to be able have easy way of adding more space to the system like with a hard drive 2.5 preferably. That's only when your stationary. That option would be great for movies and music instead of traveling with so many memory sticks unless you don't want to drag the hard drive you use.

   Re: coolguy5678 - 2009-01-15
 » Well, for one:

Games written for the second analog nub wouldn't work on older PSP's. Unless a game which uses the second nub can't use the face buttons too, so people on older PSP's can use the face buttons like most FPS games on the PSP.

   Re: coolguy5678 - 2009-01-15
 » Forgot to add:

I wouldn't be so big on rumble since it might make you more likely to drop your PSP. Although in practice that probably wouldn't happen, I'd still feel uneasy about it.

   Re: dogan - 2009-01-15
» not a fan of dual nubs

Don't get me wrong, they work on the Dual Shock controller along with R2 and L2, but that is because the controller is designed to fit your hand and provide access to all the buttons without the need for you to actually look at it the whole time too.

While i'm sure some of you have no problem instantly switching from directional buttons to nub and so forth i'm not one of you. I understand that this is a portable system designed to fit in my pocket while sporting a big sexy screen and good enough hardware to do nearly everything a PS2 can. So, please no second nub.

Touchscreen is a no go either, like we need another expensive built in to break. Internal memory if they decide to do full digital game sales. Buy the UMD get a code, use code to add full game to your account and download if/when necessary for the life of the account. Smaller, No. Lighter yet stronger and thinner, Yes. Why are we answering the survey questions here? :P

   Re: Techni - 2009-01-15
 » um...

Sony knows we want a second stick. It probably wasn't on the survey BECAUSE they know about it

   Re: blabbermouth - 2009-01-15
» Thats easier said than done

If they added a second analog nub it would really screw over the already established user base that only has one.

   by itzzspencer - 2009-01-15
 » i

agree with ranger wolf. imagine the possibilities with dual analog nubs... and games that are meant to be used with it. *drools*.. anyway, my screens dirty enough, no touchscreen, i like my buttons oily from grease, not my screen x). however i would like touchscreen function, but i dont want much games to rely on it. if anyone gets what im saying.. sure i'd like to touch something every once n a while. the slim is slim enough.. instead of making it smaller, try making it with stronger material :). everything else that is listed would be a dream come true

psp2 rumors have been going around ever since the psp first came out. wtf...

   by Acteon - 2009-01-15
 » ...

*Sigh* Although I don't have a problem with the missing second nub on the current unit, I think they'd be making a huge mistake if they left it out of the next update.

That said, this is a survey on prospective changes - perhaps the second nub is going on regardless? After all, I'm sure the industry will pretty much demand it, as ports for PS2 titles will be dependant on it.

with the gfx enhancement at par or better than ps2 and can run ps2 eboots, with all the dual nubs and R2 L2 buttons. that way i can play my persona4 in the library when i got bored with the lecture notes...

 » also

want an inherent hdd, small form factor is acceptable, longer batt (i know this will be hard), and network connection to the wireless fidelity channels as in playing in ad-hoc or xlink kai without the need for ps3. it is doable, just need to sort out the routing mechanism and some ISI issues and other networking problems

   Re: raggedjimmi - 2009-01-15

"inherent hdd"
Sounds like you should listen up in lectures.

I'd like PSN built right into the system, like the PS3s.
Touchscreen would be really useful if they want to make it more multimedia based (or at least vaguely accessibly, especially the web browser).
POP3 email support.
Internal storage and lots of it.
Support a popular memory format (SDHC for example).
Better speakers, some as good as the DS fat would be nice.
A screen without ghosting or blurring.
Faster UMD speeds. MUCH faster.
Tough glass display.

all i have to say, love the ideas listed...but if there going to sell me a new psp, 2nd analog is a must (for me) and about the touchscreen, i think it would be great... ONLY if they give us a high quality touch screen... (i mean, imagine the possibilities of it if a psp with a touchscreen and a second analog homebrew wise)... and dont forget more ram and better processer of course...

   by KingPepper - 2009-01-15
» How's this for an idea........?

How about solving two problems with one solution, as the NDS/Lite has, Dual screens, the top screen could be the Games screen or Web browser, the bottom screen could be a touch screen with on screen Keyboard for the above games or Browser, as a Clam shell design, also on the bottom segment of the machine could be its dual Analogue Nubs, and of course improve the spec's of the actual PSP2, and last but not least, someone above mentioned, use one of the new 2 T Memorycard's instead of a hard drive, which would be noisy. :o)

   Re: ptspyder - 2009-01-15
 » How about no

Ill be the first to say it, I really do not like how the DS feels in my hand. The shape doesnt really fit well, the two screens will never be used independently by software developers, making you need to jump from screen to screen, which is annoying. Plus, the clamshell design in conjunction with a touchscreen means that you will end up holding the unit with on hand only, and then you will be using the touch screen as the primary input method.

Honestly, if you want a new version of a DS, just buy a DSi when they come out in a few months. Dont go screwing up the next psp by abandoning what made the system unique vs its competitor.

   Re: KylBlz - 2009-01-15
 » not a good one

Dont change the PSP to make it into a DS, thats probably the stupidest move sony could make, and they make some not-so-smart moves sometimes.
1) i like the PSP screen, its 1 huge ass high rez screen, not 2 little crappy low quality dim screens.
2) if your fingers are on the dual nubs [:D] then when are you going to have time for the touch screen in-game [touch for web browsing/xmb use is amazing]
3) hard drives aren't noisy. look at iPods. also, sandisk is developing a multi terabyte solid state hard drive as we speak [something different from the sony + sandisk roomer] it takes little power, no scan time, and extremely compact.

i say, throw in a dual nub, touch screen OPTION more WIFI support, unlocked firmware [lol yeah right] and higher performance.

   Re: KingPepper - 2009-01-16
» I did not mean the same type of screen as the DS.

I meant the same high Rez screen as the latest PSP3000, but two of them, linked together, in Clam shell design, i still don't want a Hard drive, though, as they break down, too easily.
and as for the other comment, i do not want another DS, in fact the latest version has a lot less options than the Lite version, and yes the PSP is unique alright, it has no SODDING games to play on it. LOL
   by bobthemime - 2009-01-15
 » better connectivity

bluetooth is good, id also like to see them put in a 802.11n (wireless N), and a faster processor maybe a 45nm like the intel atom since thats all the rage nowadays, and more ram, and if they are going to add a form of internal memory they should go with a solid state drive so its not all loud, and a built in webcam maybe...just maybe...but not so much

   by GLO13AL_T3RROR - 2009-01-15
» upgrade the god damn flash player.

Flash player 9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!so that we can watch videos from our psp through internet browser.

   by NDWolfwood - 2009-01-15
 » i agree!

I think Flash Player 9 would be the ultimate feature. I'd also like to see Google Earth in there lol :P

Maybe Facebook in the XMB?

   by tinjastin - 2009-01-15
 » any design will do

well for me any design will do as long as it is hackable or has customizable firmware ... cause all is just a waste if youll gonna use UMD or sych..it sucks!

large hardrives = more games

   by bobthemime - 2009-01-15
 » and wimax

id also like to see wimax since thats going to be big in the future and isnt flash 10 out i want that...and 3g just for the heck of it

   by NarooN - 2009-01-16
 » meh.

Seriously. A lot of the things people want should have either been there since PSP 1001/2000 series or just put in Firmware updates. I refuse to spend $169.99 on a new revision of the PSP every damn year. I'm content with my 2000 series and it's just retarded how they churn out new PSP models like it's some sort of cell phone or something.

Flash player 9 would be great, bluetooth would have been nice as well as internal storage. Being able to access my PSN friends list without using Skype or Remote Play is needed. Things like the Touch Screen and such are simply wants from people who want random crap added. There's absolutely no use at all for a touch screen. The XMB is already organized perfectly enough, so why would you want to touch everything and get the PSP's sexy screen all fingerprinted-up?

I think the survey exists. Don't see why anyone would lie their asses off to this extent so yeah. What ever happened to the GPS and Camera we were supposed to get? Lats I heard Sony released it in every damn region except North America.

   by TexasMade - 2009-01-16
 » i guess....

those features sound nice xcept the touchscreen.. better processor n flash player 9 would be nice tho... i would just want a new psp to be hackable because i have a business going on and im making $15 to hack each psp i get.. in the 2 months i been hackin, i made about $300 doing this..

   by irwintorres727 - 2009-01-16
» still feels like a SNES controller with an analog, make it feel more like a psx controller.

2nd analog stick and L2 and R2 buttons, thats all i ask.
