Square Enix President Yoichi Wada shaking things up - Image 1There's no doubt that Square Enix has some of the best selling games in the history of gaming. The Final Fantasy franchise alone is a testament to this.

However, as Square Enix's games become more and more sophisticated, are their games becoming less and less part of the mainstream? Are their games beginning to cater only to the tastes of a certain portion of the gaming population?

According to rumors, these questions are currently haunting the company. It goes that the company held a heated meeting over a month ago, after their 2007 financial statement indicated that they are leaking cash.

Big boss Yoichi Wada supposedly put his foot down, threatening to axe employees if they didn't, according to Kotaku's paraphrase, "stop making games that only they wanted to play." Aw, but we want to play the games they want to play.

Personal attachments to their franchises aside though (updates on Kingdom Hearts 3 please, Squeenix!), and keeping in mind that Wada's outburst could indeed just be rumor, but it's still an intriguing notion to ask: is Square Enix starting to deviate from the mainstream?

 » Yeah right..

It has absolutely nothing to with the complete lack of a single next-gen console game 2 and a half years into the generation's life-cycle.

It has absolutely nothing to do with no less than 4 separate remake projects underway at any given time. (Final Fantasy 4, 3 Dragon Quests and 2 Star Ocean remakes currently under development?!)

It has absolutely nothing to do with the year long localizations.

CELLPHONE GAMES?!!! WTF?!!!

It must be the over-use of innovation and originality.

You know what I think the problem may be? Bad upper management!

 » Thank you

you made me lol. anyways I really couldn't agree more. Its about time for Square Enix to step it up and start putting out some next-gen games.

All true. Sick of all these remakes. I've already played them, I want something new, or at the very least extensions of existing stories. It might be milking them, but a new pre/se-quel is better than another remake.

Got to say though, killin the core gameplay can't have helped much either.

You'd think they'd have realised after XI not to mess with the foundations. But no, then they had to go do XII.I haven't even bothered looking at XIII, but I don't have high hopes really.

FF are turn-based games. Thats what their fanbase has always gone to them for. Because they're amazing turn-based RPGs. You don't go gut the core mechanics and try turn it into a bloody action/turn hybrid, or into an MMO. It just doesn't work. Crystal Chronicles? Tactics? XI? XII? Yeah they've all got their fanbases, but why do you think the main market don't swipe them up like we used to do with IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and finally X? (Small before IV, they weren't swiped up so much on the NES before anyone says, I left those out on purpose.)

changing tha battle system could actually help it.
the crisis core system was unique and fun. and imagine final fantasy running as an action rpg such as kingdom hearts. that could help

i really believe that making all these portable games and spinoffs are stupid. ffxii revenant wings?
wtf?

i atleast am looking forward to ff versus xiii
since its being made by the kingdom hearts teamn :D

 » FF VII remake !!!

Damn why wouldn't they make a release on the PS3 for the best RPG ever ? It's not a game "they want to make", it is a game EVERY human being want them to make!!!

   Re: gamephreak5 - 2008-05-27
 » Best RPG ever?...

FFVII is far from being the "best RPG game ever", although I do think it's a good game and a remake would be interesting...but best RPG game ever? seriously?! LOL

Play Chrono Trigger sometime.

 » FFVII is the best..

I've played a lot of RPGs, and FFVII still stands out as the best. As a general consensus, many people still view it as the best game ever created...I'm among that group. I'll never get tired of that game.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-05-27
 » hell no.

FFVII isn't anywhere near being the best RPG ever, and screw a remake. Everyone needs to move on. I guess people just love the emo characters and horrible graphics, complete lack of voice-acting and lame story. I might not be fair, but they already made 50 billion spin-offs and merchandise, just let it die already, damn. It's also nowhere CLOSE to being the best game ever. There's no such thing as the best game ever. That's just someone's opinion...

   Re: rpgpro001 - 2008-05-27
 » it's close

If FF7 is not the best RPG of all time, it has to be rated as one of the best. more people have heard of/played final fantasy 7 than any other RPG so it has to be rated as one of the top. me personally, I like Chrono Trigger, FF III, Legend of Dragoon, and Tales of Symphonia, but FF VII is up there with them. square just needs to give more info to FF XIII and vs XIII, and FF Dissidia for psp.

   Re: aroxim - 2008-05-27
 » uhh yea....

yea cause u know... the best game ever is set by best graphics, best voice acting, and "normal" characters. the story of the game was incredible and i dont believe that anything could beat that story. i mean kingdom hearts has an interesting story, and metal gear solid. well its pretty tight. but this compliation they made works perfectly hmm a remake? well that would improve the best story in a game alot, with more enhanced visuals and basically eyecandy :)

Xenogears > FF7

   Re: foetus - 2008-05-28
» MY VIEW OF BEST RPGZ

FF7 IS NO1
FF7CC SECOND
CHRONO CROSS THIRD
IF WE TALK ABOUT RPG WITH 3D

FF 1-6 + CHRONO TRIGGER ON SAME LEVEL

SORRY FOR CAPS LOCK - I AM RENDERING IN AFTER EFFECTS :(
I AM NOT SHOUTING :)

Xenogears>FFVII
Agreed Xenogears Story throws FFVII's into the dirt and knocks out its teeth and then makes it eat them and crap them out!

   Re: Dragoon - 2008-05-29

Kingdom Hearts 2 > Kingdom Hearts > Legend of Dragoon + Tales of Symphonia > Golden Sun 2 > Golden Sun > FFxxx.

Truth.

   Re: Project D - 2008-05-30
 » Such hostility!

Good god, NarooN, check your shoes for pebbles. I think the whole reason so many people want a FFVII remake (myself included in that list) is that we want updated graphics, voice acting, and...well, we all like the story, so...stop acting like a douche. Like you said, there is no best game ever because it's totally subjective. So let us have our opinions, they don't hurt you any.

Me? I'd *love* a new FFVII. Especially if it meant I could play the game on a system where my memory card wouldn't *always* corrupt before I can complete it.

 » More wii games.

Yes that's what he means, if everybody else can sell a game where you wave your arms around and pick up dog poo, then what's the point of doing complex storylines and optimizing games to get great graphics.... no disrespect to wii owners though. I just think it's best if not every consoles becomes a wii.

Anywho, as far as best rpg, personally it would be xenosaga, or star ocean II.... maybe tales of symphonia. As much as I like FF VIII, the biggest reason to me is Sephiroth, the guy is just so cool, and so damn evil you hate him, but you can't help thinking he's bad ass too. The materia/magic system was also to me the best in any of the FF games. If Cloud wasn't such a little prick at the start of the game I probably would have like much much more, or if Tifa would have gotten to kick more behind. The original Dragon Quest (warrior) was also superb for it's time, as was FF VI (III in the US) which I think it's my favority FF game to date.

 » Square Enix...

Square Enix should bring out more of there non-FF games. Front Mission for the PS3 would work. And get some of Enix's games come more to the front. I found Enix makes better games anyway.
