Sounds like an accurate assessment of their current business practices to me. They're no longer the struggling company they once were, so they don't have to focus on capturing the attention of consumers anymore, merely releasing something that will even vaguely capture the attention of fans. I've been a fan since I was a kid, and I got fed up with it shortly after Dirge. On the bright side, it's making companies that were never known for hard hitting titles release some awesome stuff...

everyone knows each iteration of the final fantasy series is basically a new ip on its own, none of the differently numbered games have almost anything to do with one another... so saying they would simply be creating sequels etc is totally missing the point, they're simply using the final fantasy brand as their way of assuring people of the quality of the title they're about to release.
this is why i hate the internet for news reporting... anyone can be a reporter and anyone can have their say, gone are the days of considered dialogue, sensible conclusions and professionalism... i have a new mantra, it goes like this: 'don't believe the internet'.

What a stupid rumour. They would never stop making new FF games (that are not sequels) when they have always been great and good selling titles, like FF-XIII promises to be as we can see by the reactions when new screenshots come out (that will probably be the game that will make me, a PS2 and a PSP owner, buy a PS3, since no PS3 title has captivated me so far).
But these kinds of rumours are always bad.
I'm afraid if squeenix has ever considered releasing any sequel to FF 8, this will probably help on them stepping back on that idea (not that I think FF 8 needs a sequel, for I think it was a great game with a good ending, i'd say "leave it as it is").
What i'm afraid is that this kind of "humour" might make squeenix drop for good any ideas about releasing a remake of ff-vii on ps3, or any other well-thought sequel of any other ff game ("well-thought" like the brilliant advent children was, although not a game). Let's hope not.
Meanwhile, I'm hoping Crisis Core won't be such a disapointment like Dirge of Cereberus was.
