PSP - Image 1The rumor's been around for so long, it's starting to sound like it's real...or maybe just for the hopeful ones. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's (SCEE) CEO David Reeves has denied that a PSP phone is in the works, or is even being considered for development by either SCE or Sony Ericsson.

But what about the patent, the reported deal between Sony and UK carrier BT Mobile, and Sony Ericsson being the supposed manufacturer of the PSP phone?

Reeves says he hasn't heard about the development of a PSP phone. "I know the head of Sony Ericsson very well... He has a Walkman phone and a Cybershot phone available, but I know nothing about a PSP phone." He reiterates, "and I would know."

And here we were hoping to see a PSP with a screen that moves and swivels 90-degrees... That would have been interesting.

of course that's not going to happen, one of the main things you need in a phone is battery life.. something the psp doesn't have.

I'm betting that it was a hoax, however, it's never been beyond them to lie about something like that either.

 » It's still real

I don't care what anyone says. That guy is under a NDA. He has to deny it or he can get canned. There's no way that they would sign this deal and not go through with it. Especially with the market hype. It's a huge win-win situation with Sony and BT. It'll happen.... The hoax is that you guys believe David Reeves.

........ I'm telling you, he's just covering his butt.

Both this and the iPhone are going to be crushed by the Google phone...

Google is going to give it away "for free". You simply cannot compete with that.

   Re: Kichigai - 2007-06-11
 » Yeah, but...

Except that Google already denied their phone offering. Google isn't known for keeping a lot of secrets (want to know what they're developing? Check out Google Labs), and they've never expressed interest in moving outside of your computer, with exception to Goog411 (a free 411 service which you can reach by dialing 1-800-goo-g411).

I mean, what would the Google phone use as a network? WiFi? AT+T and T-Mobile's GSM networks, or Sprint and Verizon's CDMA? I can promise you that AT+T wouldn't grab it for risk of cannibalizing the iPhone, same for T-Mo, but swap "iPhone" for "Sidekick." And they wouldn't go for Sprint or Verizon since they use CDMA networks, and Google doesn't want to alienate their global customer base (the rest of the world uses GSM).

Sorry man, this rumor has been dead for ages.

And they're "not competing with MS". Right.

If it's true, they are to officially announce this by september. I'm still doubtful about it being a rumor.
They would not allienate their previous costumers, they would expand their market enourmously. It would work on the same basis as their PC software does: you use it for free, but in exchange for your privacy. (If you think this statement is paranoid, go ahead and read the EULA from the free edition of Google Desktop).

 » No VoIP?

I'm wondering if he's talking about Sony's VoIP offerings in Europe? I mean, they've already given the PSP a VoIP system in the UK, and the Mylo comes with Skype pre-loaded... To be honest, I wouldn't buy the PSP Phone since my existing PSP is just fine, and I probably wouldn't use Skype on a PSP because unless I'm at home (which has a landline), I can't get online with my PSP (my school went and encrypted their access points with WPA Enterprise). Besides, I'm already spending money on my cell phone, why would I want to spend it on VoIP.

I'm going to believe this guy, because this would be a HUGE risk for Sony if they were going for it. They would have to prove to people that they need this machine (which the iPhone has done, and the original PSP hasn't succeeded at doing yet), AND they'd have to beat out the iPhone. Sony hasn't had a good streak with introducing new technologies recently, so they're going to hang back, lick their wounds, and try to get the PS3 on its way before they start risking anything.

 » yeah...

My collage do that too with the wireless... I can't wach with the location free anymore at my school and thats why I buy the location free in the past... the wifi of psp is so poor... anyway... anyway... I love to see skype in the psp.. I will love too... I don't have to turn the computer on to do that and not everyone have a computer in their bedrooms... and sometimes I just want to surf the web to see something or connect to skype... or call my friend in spain that she went there for vacations and I want to make a free call... and with that the psp will sell more their headset that have the mic and all without to go to the office room to turn on the computer... is the add ons the people buy things... maybe without using it... like the rss channel.. a lot of people don't use it but I use it a lot...

they allways deny stuff..some of it comes tru some does not....this sounds like it cud make a pritty penny for sony if 1st they actually institute this into the sony psps and the new lighter one, and and if they develop it right...not bung in new crappy firmware that locks all the abilities that come with a modern mobile phone.

 » Not Really Needed

I am pretty sure everyone on this forum boards has a phone. I have a Motorola KRZR with Cingular wireless. But they do got head parts for the PSP with a mic so really not needed to turn 90 degress. So yeah...
