PSP Camera

Back in May, a funny little attachment which appeared to be a camera was seen on top of a PSP at the E3. Last month, pictures showed the same attachment, along with its cousin, the GPS receiver, was again found floating around on the internet. And now...they're official and soon to be for sale.

At the moment, the PSP camera has finally been unveiled and is set to hit retail stores in Japan by November 2, 2006 for ¥5000 (around $ 43) a pop. Dubbed as the "Chotto Shot" ("Little Shot"), the camera will come with its own software and a carrying case. It can capture still images at either 480x272 or 640x480 resolutions, while videos can be recorded at 480x272 at 30 frames per second for as long as 15 seconds. Using the software "Chotto Shot Edit", you can then apply borders, effects, decorations, background music, and captions to your photos and videos among other things, and all on your PSP. You can then share your pictures and footage with friends via ad hoc mode.

As for the GPS unit, it will retail for ¥ 6000 (around $51) by December 7th but will not come with any software.

Id say the GPS reciever will come with some sort of mapping software. Otherwise it would be completely useless and no one would buy it. I know sony has screwed us over so much lately but releasing GPS without some software even if its basic would be stupid.

I hope it will work with MapThis!

I was wondering, if for the camera you will actually need to update your firmware to use it (which I obviously won't be doing lol)

I was hopeing to see some requirements in this post but meh - Looks just about time to do some googling.

» $43 bucks for that crap?!

1.3 MP camera? What year are they living in? My PHONE has better resolution than that and I bought it over a year ago. Not to mention my phone can record more than 15 friggan seconds of video as well. $43 is way too much to pay for that crap; I could understand twenty bucks, maybe.

There is no excuse for it to be anything under 2-3 MP, especially for a price like that.

 » ?

15 seconds only? thats pretty short

   by td (Unregistered) - 2006-09-23

hmm... maybe it wont be in a firmware update but a signed, encrypted eboot from the xmb... no point making a new firmware anyway juz for the cam and gps

 » what a shame

What use are 640x480 images? 1.3meg is just not acceptable. My phone takes better pictures and my video is only limited to the size of my mem stick. What were they thinking? :(

I could REALLY use a decent camera for my PSP, but 1.3 meg? Keep it. I'm not interrested in anything below 3 meg as the pic's are not even printable quality. So what's the point of having it then...?

The GPS however seems much better. I'll DEF be buying that.

 » lol

Well as most of the true gamers know , the 360 cam was released this week . Upon reviewing it , it is a 1.3 megapixel cam as well . The translation is flaweless on the 360 . Granted the PSP doesnt have the bells and whistles of the 360 . But this 1.3 MP not being enough is more than BS . The transdlation between cam and PSP should be more than adequet.

   by a (Unregistered) - 2006-09-23

think of it as a webcam not a digicam. hopefully there will be some wireless video conferencing software coming for it, eithe r from sony or homebrewed. in that case, 1.3 is fine.
