Silent hillNot a few gamers have learned to love the videogame Silent Hill. Not surprisingly, Hollywood tried to grab a bit of the spotlight by making a movie based from it. Well, we loved it as well... loved to forget we ever watched it (and wasted good money on it), that is. If you're one of the rare ones who find this flick worthy enough of having UMD, DVD and Blu-ray copies of it, you're in luck (or are you?). That's because come August 22, Silent Hill will be hitting stores in UMD, DVD and Blu-ray formats.

Silent Hill, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (that explains why it made it to Blu-ray and UMD), follows the story of a mother (Radha Mitchell; perhaps the only good thing that happened to that movie) who lost her daughter in a mystery-riddled town. In her mission to find her child, she encounters hell and all the creatures that goes with that dreadful place. The film itself will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track.

If you're the masochistic type, prepare to shell out $28.95 and $38.95 for DVD and Blu-ray copies respectively. Of course, the Blu-ray copy costs higher - there's a price to pay for higher features you know (same reason why PS3 is priced that much). No word regarding the price for UMD formats were mentioned, but in cases like this, would it have bothered you if there is?

» Not exactly what you call a launch title.

The movie was on itself good enough but for the fan masses it was too meh.

I personally loved the movie. Thought it was faithful to the games and elaborated the genesis story of Silent Hill. Ending was a let down but all the endings for the games had the same feeling: you completed what you set out to do but at the end, you realize that you haven't accomplished anything at all. There is no "HAPPY" ending in Silent Hill. If the movie had made you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, than it didn't keep to the original structure of the series.

I respect that they kept everything intact with the movie and I hope Sony will be making another sequel soon.

"survival horror's" ??? Aren't all Horrors???

I mean I never seen a movie that didn't have someone tryen to survive through it...

I guess they just all of a sudden decide to give certain few a name to try and make them stand apart...

thats a very astute observation ol chum. I do declare you may be right on the money with that .. .. question/statement. BY george u R right!!

seriously though , that is true, i never noticed that. I guess survival horror is just a game related category. I dont think there is a horror genre in games, just survival horror.

oh wait , i just thought of soemthing. I know doom is in the horror genre , but it isnt classed as survival horror, so I guess if you wantd to classify doom it'd be fps/horror.

 » Movie was great

Just had an AWFUL child actress (and a soso mother-actress).

Wish the DvD would have the original 3h version, since the 2h version actually seems a bit cutted-to-fit.

Great ending btw.

Sorry if I stepped on some shoes. I wasn't being negative on UMD and Blu-ray (which, should I add, are both very cool pieces of hw), but on the movie itself. Because of:
-as pointed by 10 (bad cast)
-just innate negativity on hollywood flicks that lack creativity. I mean, the trend of just riding on any popular media (book, videogame, comicbook, etc.) then making movies out of it. While some may have turned good, there are quite a handful of bad ones, damaging even the image of the source of idea (anyone who saw doom knows what I mean). gain, apologies.

» Those prices arent what youll pay

That price is the suggested retail price, which is basically never, ever, ever the price we see. We tend to see a suggested price of $25/$29 for a DVD, and then we buy it at Newbury Comic's or Target for $15. So, a $40 Blu Ray retail suggestion would probably wind up being $25

» SILENT HILL OR RESIDENT EVIL

personnaly, i luved tha movie that much. Thyz movie stayed way more in touch with tha game feelings and surroundings than resident evil ever did. I am a huge fan of both games, but despite tha fact that resident evil had two movies, s.h waz wayyyyyy better. I herd theres another s.h movie in talks and a few more r.e movies. lets hope they dont mess it up. what do you guys think

The movie was great. One of the best horrors lately.

Maybe it didn't include enough elements that could make it worthy for game fans, but still a great flick.

"Love to forget we ever saw it?"
Bite me. For every person who thought that movie was crap, someone liked it.

My own opinion is that the movie was pretty right. The dead babies scene was the freakiest thing I've seen in cinima in years. The atmosphere was vivid, the monsters were visually horrifying, and it was a great 'head f*ck' film.

The movie as a whole was not a waste of money, or complete sh*t, it just got REALLY sluggish in the middle. If you haven't seen it, rent it so you can atleast fast forward to the cool parts where hell breaks loose.

As for me, Silent Hill is a worthy Blu-Ray purchase (depending on price...)

 » Good movie... l 2watch movies

I agree w/ those that liked the movie...To say something like "forget you saw it" is just based on one of the many people who have an IQ of less than 10 when the movie ended and just said "huh? what? this movie blows."

I just wish more people would take more time to understand a movie than sit there like witless retards. I wish half the game->movie directors out there took the time that this guy did to make something so close to the worth of the actual franchise

 » widescreen!!!!!!!

i dont know why the produces of films always put films in widescreen! it is so S***!!!! what is the point of cutting off half the screen!!!!! it annoys me so much!

   by by (Unregistered) - 2006-07-03
 » confused #25

Widescreen is not cutting off half the screen, fullscreen is. Widescreen is the original version (mostly) where as fullscreen cuts off the side and inlarges the rest to fit the screen.

the movie wasnt great but it had great atmosphere and was way different than any other horror film out there . It was the atmosphere that was the main focus and i liked it . there wasnt any cheap 'door creaking' and then loud bursts of noise to scare u like most normal films.

but u know the director tried for 5 years to get this film made because he loved the game so much , and it was only when konami were sure he wasnt out to make a cheap game->movie port that they let him do it.
If anyones played the game they will defo get the same feeling as the game.
personally i thought the special effects were very well done and its a cool movie...i did wonder why there so many women in it though , and later i read soemwhere that the first script didnt have any women in it at all , and konami sent it back telling him to add some men in it.

 » 40 bucks??

That's ridiculous. Suggested retail price for new Blu-Ray titles is $23.95 (as claimed by the Blu-Ray Association). This movie was awesome though so i'll probably end up getting both the DVD and Blu-Ray versions, the latter so that once i get a PS3 I can watch Pyramid Head in hi-def glory. Plus I wanna see how big a difference there is between the two formats.
