PS Store - Image 1Giving the PSP direct access to the PlayStation Store may not kill the UMD disc, according to Sony, but it's certainly going to change the way games are distributed.

With digital distribution, Sony hopes to ignite a new breed of games to be released on the handheld. Says SCEE's Zeno Colaco (same guy who said that the PS Store won't kill the UMD format):

It gives publishers and developers much more scope in relation to the types of games they can release.

If they want to make a massive game, then they can do that, as before, as a boxed product on UMD. But if they want to do a smaller game just released online, or add downloadable content such as new characters to a UMD game, they can do that too.

I have to be careful what I say but publishers are definitely exploring more opportunities in terms of the types of games they can release on PSP, even in terms of more female-oriented games, puzzlers and less hardcore games.

Well you can imagine the possibilities. Being able to distribute smaller gamers digitally would really open the doors for the PSP. If devs decide to flood the PS Store with casual games, that means the PSP is no longer the "hardcore" handheld platform.

If that happens, that means more PSP sales, which means more devs would be interested in making games for the PSP, which means more PSP games. Now let's just hope it won't take the WiiWare route and get flooded with shovelware.

 » mmm

less hardcore games.

i have to agree, im a hardcore fps fan

the psp is capable, (specs) to run hardcore games, problem is sonys epic fail the analogues

anyway the psp is probably more suited to casual game, because its portable, i dont play hardcore games on the go, or if i need to fill some time

yes i would play online games but lets face it, with o dual analogues your not going to be getting grade a fps online games, youd have to sit and concentrate because of the funny controls

» PSP's golden age is at hand

Great, now devs can sell their small puzzles games online while they prepare awesome hardcore ones for the UMD format.

Support PSP developers!

 » Nice!

I've always wanted my PSP games to come with DLC.
Wipeout and Killzone were good starters, but I think in the future we might see some sweet DLC in our Big-name titles!

I'm glad to see that Sony is giving smaller development teams the option to go digital - this means we're more likely to see games like Bionic Commando Rearmed popup on the handheld.

There are already some pretty sweet, and underrated titles available on the PSP, and I think that those games have a shot at making a little more money if they were made available on the PSP store, like Space Invaders Extreme..

Yeah I totally agree with you, The PSP definitely needs some good DLC. The PSP gives so much opportunities for DLC, just imagine similar addons like the ones from Burnout Paradise or extra multiplayer levels for Resistance: Retribution.
Just like the PS3, the PSP still offers so much opportunites and still has great potential.
Unfortunately, only a few developers are using them.
When we look at examples like Monster Hunter Unite, everybody who say the PSP is dead, should be shot.

 » indeed

perhaps this is a calling for Kojima?? perhaps, Metal Gear or not....

@Sythun

same thing..Kojima....now that there "shouldnt" be limits to game sizes, he can fully utilize the dialogue, which he always loves to make long-winded and other whatnots!

» Does this mean no limit to the game sizes?

Does having games distributed on Playstation Store mean they won't have the umd size limits anymore? If so, this has to be one of the best features ever!

Having DLC for PSP is also an awesome idea! it'll probably help add more stuff that couldn't fit in the 1.8gb umd, though not all games needed 1.8gb.

 » Maybe just maybe

We all have a limit on our memory sticks tho....8 gbs each.

Thats what they should of done tho is made a read only SD card or compact flash.

 » hmm i forgot that

That's right, man, we have a limit after all

I hope those sony guys had included a compatibility to +8gb cards in the PSP 3000 (now that they are including this store system)

» Not that this would ever happen, but...

I think it would be cool to get some Popcap games for the psp. Definitely some fun time wasters there.
