Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey will probably forever be known to gamers as the guy who said Sony would rip Blu-ray out of the PS3 in order to cut down its price tag.

I still don't think that's gonna happen, and so does Sony, apparently. Speaking to Business Insider, Sony marketing manager Kim Nguyen had this to say:

That would pretty much destroy the PS3's backbone, our games were built on Blu-ray. Quote that: Blu-ray will always be part of PS3.

Sony execs also reiterated that they will not offer a cheaper, offline-only PS3 with an online play function that can only be accessed by paying an annual fee. As Sony exec Susan Panico said, "Online gaming is like a First Amendment right."

Panico also said that they have "nothing to announce" regarding a PS3-optimized interface for streaming internet video ala Microsoft's Netflix service. There may be something similar coming in the future, though, as she also told Business Insider to "stay tuned".

They also touched a bit on the seemingly-immortal PSP phone rumor, saying that they are working on nothing of the sort. For now, PSP users will have to make do with Wifi-tethered VoIP. They didn't say anything about the PSP-4000 though.

And the PS3 price cuts? Not gonna happen. But then that's really nothing new.

Mike Hickey's an idiot. Why would Sony remove Blu ray from the console when all their games are written on Blu ray discs. The PS3 HAS to have Blu ray. Removing the BD movie playing capability wouldn't save them any money.

 » Lol remove bluray?

Who ever thought of that is obviously dumb, if they removed bluray it wouldnt be a PS3 because no games would work on it.

then winning the format war will be less significant... hope the technological advances and economies of scale will benefit us users through reduced production costs thus reducing the price tag of ps3's. furthermore, a firmware approach of optimizing the interface for internet streaming is undoubtedly the best option so far, with upgrading the current firmware with the latest UDP version, though it may also be limited by the hardware capabilities.

I may hack analysts, it's still news people. If you do not like them, stop clicking the damn article and reading it. QJ staff(who are also gamers) put up news other gamers may enjoy reading and replying to. They're not obligated to bend over and do anything you guys say at a whim.

Anyway, obviously it's stupid idea to take blu-ray out. But anyone could have told you that. Nothing new here.

 » No price cut...

until people smarten up and stop paying $150 to get a refurb PS3 after Sony's crappy product implode.

Sony has clearly not delivered on the promise of a premium product...their units should be cheaper than the 360 and the Wii which have BOTH clearly given the customer what they wanted.

Sony is clearly relying on their brand to charge a premium. The PS3 and its software are clearly not "worth it".

In other words, they're never going to drop the price just as long people are so desperate (not the word I want to use, but I'm trying to be nice) to turn in their $600 units for $150 used units.

   Re: Datnizzle - 2009-03-15
» That comment made no sense.

What $150 PS3's? Cheaper than a360? Face it dude the 360 is the cheapest console for a reason.
How much is a red-ringed 360 going for these days? Enjoy your timebomb360 you still have a year and a half left on your warranty, hope t dies before then.

   Re: RexNox - 2009-03-15
 » 150 PS3

Is the cost of buying a refurb PS3 once your PS3 smokes. You send in your $600 piece of equipment, and send them $150. And, they send you a refurb (someone else's broken now fixed PS3). What a bargin? At least, MS increased the warranty to cover their crap. Sony believes its customers are so stupid...they'll increase just buy another. Why lower the price when folks are that dumb?
   by RexNox - 2009-03-15
 » sry...

...they'll just buy another one.

   by majorbigss - 2009-03-15
 » @Datnizzle

M$ HAD to increase their warranty coverage due to mass rrod or else they would lose bussiness in the long run or worse face countless lawsuits. i know this because i was a victim. sony in other hand doesnt need to do that because their systems are rock solid. had my ps3 for a year and a half now after i sold my third 360 before it crapped out on me and the ps3 is still going strong. so yeah if my ps3 stopped working i think i would pay the $150 with a smile on my face knowing its all woth it for a high quality piece of equipment that will keep working for years.

sorry it was suppose to say @RexNox

   Re: RexNox - 2009-03-15
 » Case in point.

I guess you don't know what...REFURBISHED means yet. Let's see if you have the capacity to look it up.

If you turn in your product and don't have to pay for it... a "refurbished" piece is still loss.

However, add another $150 plus turn in your old piece, and you've walked into the moron hall of fame. And, I'm not flaming you, ANYONE doing that is short, yellow bus material.

Which, of course, Sony and any another company for that matter, counts on.

The original point was as long as there people like you (whether you're a shill or PR person for Sony or not), they won't drop the price.
