Last week, the community was rocked with rumors of a new PSP that was reportedly under development. Aside from some rather questionable pictures however, not much else was known about this SKU, which has been dubbed the PSP-3000. Ironic, considering that the days before this revelation are littered with speculation of what the PSP’s next evolutionary step will have.

This article will attempt to piece together some of the bigger rumors we’ve run into in the past, and see just how they all fit together. Take them as “What if” possibilities – no more, no less.

First glance

Outwardly, the presumed PSP-3000 prototype – we’ll call it the 3k for short - doesn’t look that different from the PSP Slim. Based on the available images we have, the 3k has the same body size as the Slim, going as far as having the same glossy black finish and labels for its headset port.

What is visibly different is the new PlayStation button that’s replaced the home button. Current speculation indicates that this was done by Sony so that there wouldn’t be any confusionbetween the PS button on the PSP, and the one found on the PlayStation 3’s SIXAXIS controller. Basically, if you know how to operate a PS3, then you’ll know how to use the new PSP.

The other noticeable difference is an integral microphone located to the right of the volume controls. It doesn’t seem like a big difference at first glance, but since the 3k now carries it built-in as compared to a separate, purchasable accessory, that does offer up some interesting possibilities for game devs or similar groups with vested interests in the handheld. We’ll delve into that matter a little later.

From here, not much else can be said of the unit’s internal workings. Is it running on an entirely new motherboard? How will its specs compare to the two models already out? While we can’t answer these questions yet, who’s to say we can’t draw upon some possible features the unit will carry, based on previous reports and speculations.

Memory Capacity

PSP-3000: More memory please - Image 1

A few days after Sony released the PlayStation Store’s video download service for the PlayStation 3, John Koller announced that the company was looking into giving the PSP a native version of the PS Store. From here, it’s not too hard to imagine the PSP getting the same sort of download functionality as its bigger kin.

That is, if we assume all you’ll be getting your handheld via PSN are videos. There’s also the matter of downloadable games to worry about, with titles like Echochrome being a good example of this growing trend. As more developers take a similar route for their game releases, and perhaps even launching full-sized titles online, the PSP’s current 16GB stick capacity begins to look a little lacking.

One possible solution to this is the expected arrival of an even bigger 32 GB memstick by next year. Based on another E3 2008 revelation however, Sony might be planning something bigger: hard drives. Where will Sony place the new HDD if – and that’s a very big if - it’s implemented for the PSP-3000?

One idea would be that it will replace the UMD. Delving into this idea further, I’d imagine Sony will also use a Solid-State Drive (SSD). That format is known for its resistance to physical shock – a must for the travel-savy handheld- and its compact size enables it to fit flush into the PSP-3000’s frame without any problems.

Some expected trade-offs for this transition include a considerably higher price tag for the 3k, and the SSD format’s slow read speed. More importantly, a move to dedicated a HDD format, while freeing developers from the limits of a UMD, may also open up their games to a longtime industry problem: piracy.

Apple and Oranges: The fabled PSP Phone

PSP Phone - vaporware? - Image 1PSP Phone - vaporware? - Image 2PSP Phone - vaporware? - Image 3

Is the PSP-3000 very well be the PSP Phone we’ve heard so much about? Well, yes and no. Based on a report from Marketing Week, Sony is indeed working on a PlayStation-branded phone – an entirely new gadget that will make use of functions from the PSP line. Disappointing news perhaps, but the previous phone speculations does leave us with some other interesting ideas to play with, and helps streamline what the PSP-3000 may turn into.

Touchscreen

Will the PSP-3000 have a touchscreen? Once again, the current information we’ve got isn’t much to go on, or if it even carries one, save for recent rumors of a Sony filing a patent for a gaming device with touchscreen features. Much like the Phone rumor earlier, it's still unclear if this is indeed the new PSP, or another device altogether.

If it was the 3k though, we’re looking at quite a lot of new functionality. Touch-based games are just one possibility, though my expectation is that this tech will have better synergy with the functions Sony may introduce along with native PlayStation Store support.

Think about it – being able to use the PSP’s screen as you would an iPhone or DS to browse content on PSN; Otherwise clunky tasks such as surfing the net or browsing the PSP GPS' UI becomes dramatically easier. An especially big plus point for new PSP owners specifically.

Games might be a more complicated case, given implementing this tech would depend heavily on the developers, or if they consider it important enough to be used for their projects *coughSIXAXIScough*.

The microphone

The PSP mic - Image 1The PSP mic - Image 2

Remember where the microphone was positioned – just below the screen. The bad news is this could further disprove the PSP-3000 as a PSP Phone, given it’s a poor place to put a speaker. On the other hand, that fact it’s now a permanent part of the handheld’s real estate offers up some interesting possibilities.

One such possibility is that we won’t have to invest in Sony’s proprietary headsets. A minor detail perhaps, but a big break for those who’d like to use Skype or Go!Messenger using a better set of earphones than the ones that come with the PSP. Another ambitious prospect for the built-in microphone would be more support for in-game voice chat.

Much like the touch screen as a gaming device however, this possibility rests on the devs, so don’t hold your breath. Still, a talking with teammates during a bout of Resistance: Retribution does sound par for the course.

Wrapping it up

What sort of device are we looking at if it did incorporate all these features? Well, it's not just a gaming platform anymore that's for sure. Much like the PlayStation 3, the PSP may turn out to be a media entertainment system all to its own. Do we see a potential iPod killer in Sony's future plans? I hope not - I'd very much prefer that whatever the PSP does evolve into spins off into a completely new direction.

I take this opportunity to remind the readers that this is strictly wishful thinking, based on whatever info’s available out there. Still, dreaming up the sort of possibilities that may become part of the PSP system in the near future is fun. Who knows – one of these speculations just might come true.

This is where I’ll end this connect-the-dots session, though I encourage the readers to keep on the lookout in case somebody confirms the existence of the PSP-3000. Feel free to offer you own two cents in the comments section below.

just my thoughts that psp will not ever have sumthing good like that attached to it or added on it..cuz they also suck on firmware too aslo it would make them look weird cuz then ninrtendo will see that psp is tryna copy there nintendo ds...i think ...

They're going to do what they did the last time around. They are going to make it smaller and thinner ... and they are going to remove HW that isn't used much. (who needs an analog stick anyway :)

Stop speculating so much about this new model. With all these new features you're going on about, it'll be a completely NEW PSP - a PSP2 rather than an updated model.

With the amount of speculation you're giving, the new model will be too different to the PSP-1000 - leaving the phat PSP owners out of the new games that might make use of these new features.

Stop speculating and just wait for an announcement!

"With all these new features you're going on about, it'll be a completely NEW PSP - a PSP2 rather than an updated model."

New features? A PS button and a microphone??

Even the Slim PSP had 64MB of RAM and internal memory, it was lighter, thicker, it could charge via USB, it had the UMD cacheing option, it had TV output, Skype and a lot more. And you're saying that with a microphone, PS button and a thinner PSP ring it will be a completely new PSP?

   Re: phiyuku - 2008-07-31
 » Your an Idiot

He was talking about all those speculations about a touchscreen which would make it a PSP2 by itself since if some games used the touchscreen what about us PSP Slim and Phats with no touchscreen.
Also theres the Hard Drive replacing the UMD that would mean UMD support would be dropped and UMD is the proprietary format for PSP games.

lol, yes I was referring more to the touchscreen and HDD/SSD. You can't do that without making it a new system.

Plus developers must keep in mind the spec of the phat PSP when making games for a newer model - it must still run on the old PSP!

   Re: majorbb100 - 2008-08-01
 » @marv101

no not really, i dont think that they should make the new games compatible with the old psp's. that would keep less people from upgrading.

i love new psp releases ,just makes me soooo happy and we you think sony treing to copy the nds? the psp doesnt has to screens ! does it? you know what would be very nice , a touch screen with the ability to : put the touch screen of so it can turns into a normal one !! dont think its possible but just an idea!

Re: jwydell - 9 days ago
 » psp vs nds

is there something wrong with you? seriously. the psp can do numerous things that the ds cannot. maybe you just need to put an actual psp in your hands. and why the hell would you need/want two screens? oh ya. so you can play nintendogs. loser. how about catching up and putting a usb port on the ds? imagine what you could do.

This is all speculation. If you don't realize it, all of the psphone photos are photoshopped. Everyone can have their opinions about how they want the new psp to be BUT that would be left up to SONY. They Haven't announced anything so I don't expect anything. The new psp is already enough. Adding a microphone would only be a backwards plan from sony. They wanted to make a slimmer lighter psp but adding a microphone would add to the weight. The headset is already out, just use that. A hard drive on the psp is also a backwards plan. Again adding more weight to the system. Do I have to be any clearer? All of this speculation is just riling up everyone for nothing. And anyways, any plan that SONY has for the psp should be a surprise just like the PSP slim. I didn't know that the psp slim was coming out until 1 week before its release. I have yet to get one though. I still have the old psp and it still runs great. My opinion on the firmware is that it is okay for the psp. Think about it, how can they better the firmware? Skype, Internet Access, MP3, WAV, MP4, WMA playback, Location Free(it flopped big time though), GPS, Camera, RSS channel, Ps3 to psp connection, Custom themes, Game sharing, Multi player games. Hmm.... It seems to me that these things are already available. If it wasn't for Sony making the PSP, there wouldn't be homebrew that most of psp owners use it for. But, this is not a fanboy speech. This is what the psp is. Yeah some people say the psp sucks but does it really? I say that it is okay, not Great but okay. Sony could have done a better job at developing more for it sooner rather than later. The Firmware after 2.0 obviously lacked any substance until 2.6 with the slim and 3.0 where PSX playback became possible. Just wait for an official announcement from sony on a new psp IF there is one coming out. And given the fact that the images of the "new psp" came from China, you have to know that the report is false. Sony is in JAPAN not CHINA.

» "should be a surprise just like the PSP slim"

You may not have known about it until a week before release but the months of rumors about the slim did in fact turn out to be true (despite claims from Sony that it wasn't in the cards). I'm not saying that this is BS or not but I wouldn't rule it out altogether.

» here what they should improve

louder speakers
improve umd loading and the graphics
dont make the d pad so stiff
add some more sercurity for the umd reader because that thing gets damaged easly
and maybe make the psp feel better to hold

"add some more sercurity for the umd reader"
I know it's out of it's context, but don't give them too many ideas...

 » maybe

maybe they could just make the touchscreen work in the xmb and the internet browser and not in games. and then homebrew devs could make some awesome touchscreen games. the microphone is awesome idea. and please more than anything, GIVE IS THE HDD!! i would love to be able to have 20 movies, all my favorite video clips, all my umd backups (15), and all my music fit comfortably on my psp! 60 gig hard drive PLEASE!!!!

   Re: c74gta4smash - 2008-07-31
 » To flawed

Forget about UMD backups if they can't even get homebrew on this thing. Remeber, we only have homebrew because sony left the door open. They already have a new unhackable mobo on the newer slims as of now, so what's so hard about incorporating it onto this model. Oh and expect to shell about 400 with these kinds of speculations.

   Re: majorbb100 - 2008-07-31
 » @c74gta4smash

the new slim mother board is being hacked by dark alex right now, he knows what he needs to do and is doing it right now, it will be hacked. and i dont care how much it costs. i have 2 xbox 360's which was $800 so i really dont care about price.

   Re: c74gta4smash - 2008-08-01
 » The price

That's not my main concern. Dark Alex is working on the cure for the TA-088 so consider this unsolved as of now. You don't know what it may do. I say may because this could all just be a joke. You don't know if it plays rippable UMDs. You don't know if it can be hacked or exept memory cards. These pics are not convincing. I still have yet the slightest clue why these pics come from china, when SONY is in japan and never releases screenies for their newest handhelds. All I'm saying is that your expectations were a little exagerated.

If we do see ssd, the read write speeds would be too slow to play pirated games. although this may initially cost more to develop, it might be worth it for sony.
For those of you unaware of sony ericsson, their mobile phone market has taken a major decline over the years, and a psp phone really might help them revive it.
Right now the PSP looks much like the iphone.. little tiny upgrades that sucker people into buying it.

   by timster7 - 2008-08-01
 » I hope not.

I want a HDD, but I would like to keep using my memory sticks. I've already put almost as much into memory as my psp! I also do not want a touch screen. They have lower resolution, break easier, and are hard as hell to clean. I also do not want a psp phone. Knowing Sony, it'll probably be some stupid extra service that requires additional investment in equipment, like Skype. Who uses a headset? Only like 3 games use it. I also don't think that they will make a psp with all these features that the other ones don't have. A touchscreen would be too hard to incorporate into old games. Th DS has a touchscreen and now it's not doing too well. Are they trying to make a game system for more mature gamers or a 5yr old? I'm upset that the QJ.net admins would even post this. They know that it creates hype and brings people to their site. All this is just as unlikely as before. Just because QJ.net jumps on the idiot bandwagon doesn't mean anything. The rumors for a touchscreen have been around as long as DS and Iphone. The Phone rumor was started around the release of the Iphone too. The most "phone" a psp will ever get is like skype. We won't be using it like a normal phone like the pictures above. Here's what is likely most likely, if anyhting comes of this; new processor with backwards compatibility but faster speeds, a HDD, anti-homebrew integrated technology, more RAM, possibly more file management capabilities, and possibly a new internet browser. I don't think Sony will put a touchscreen or more potent phone into use anytime soon. These would lead to compatibility issues. Sony wanted a ten year lifespan for the psp. Not the PSP, and PSP2...or whatever. A PSP-3000 is inevitable, but please don't be expecting the world of change in this new one. And to QJ.net admins, try to avoid stirring up hype over nothing. Most of these people don't realize that this is all hype that has been circulating since before th Slim, save the HDD. Nothing here is at all well founded or even somewhat probable. I can stir up controversy too if I mod one of my psp's , post it anonymously, and claim it's a new model. Besides, China? All new models of psp are constructed in Japan to prevent this. Remember the first released Slims? They were all made in Japan. This is so that Sony can decide the release without worry of a leak. Sony is very secretive. They work on their own terms. They don't contract out prototype manufacturing. They build all prototypes and first release models in Japan from separate ordered parts. If anyone knowledgeable wishes to disagree, then tell me what you think.
