Sony PSP Firmware 2.70

Sony's back again with a new firmware release for US and Japanese PSP's. Some dread firmware updates, while others embrace it but it would appear that one thing is for certain - Sony has added a few things to the 2.70 system software update for the PSP that will touch on many things which gamers have categorically requested since the first release, including a few that they didn't.

A note to keep in mind about this release. As you may recall from previous firmware releases, Sony tends to enjoy modifying their newly released firmwares to prevent gamers from playing homebrew and other unlicensed software on the PSP. From past experience we know to expect this, so before upgrading your system if you still hold homebrew close to your heart as currently all PSP's are able to play homebrew, 2.70 currently withstanding.

Update: We have confirmed that the GTA exploit does NOT work with 2.7 Firmware, so if you enjoy playing homebrew it is advised that you do not upgrade to continue using all the great homebrew applications, games and emulation the PSP community has to offer.

There are quite a few updates in this release so hold on to your hats as we take you down the rabbit hole. To break the ice we start off with a few networking updates, notably the largest update would be including partial Flash 6 support. Flash support is a great way to add a few games and movies to your PSP collection on the go, the only notable issue with integrated Flash support is that some functions are "not supported" in addition to the obvious fact that Flash 6 is somewhat outdated.

Another nice addition for this PSP firmware is audio files are now easily available from your Memory Stick after grabbing your latest podcast [rss]. On that note, music extensions for AAC have also been updated.

[Network]

  • [Internet Browser] now supports Macromedia Flash contents playback.
*You need to enable the Flash contents playback in the [System Settings].
*The version of the flash player is Macromedia Flash Player 6 (a part of the functions is not supported).
  • The settings of the [Internet Browser] is added into [Settings] -> [Connection Settings]
  • The audio contents from channels in the [RSS Channel] section now can be saved into your memory stick.
  • [Auto] option added to [Rate Change] in [Location Free Player].
*More about the Location Free base station can be found [here].

[Music]

  • Added file extension to playable AAC format.

[Settings]

  • Added [Enable Flash Player] in [System Settings].
*To change this option, you need to connect to the internet.
  • "Simplified Chinese" and "Traditional Chinese" added to [System Settings] -> [System Language].
  • Added [RSS Channel Settings].
  • Added [UMD Video L & R Button] into [Video Settings].
[Others]
  • Fixed some issues when using a memory stick with more than 2GB free space.
*This problem has not happened among the memory sticks sold in Japan until April 24.

 » Interesting...

So can people write Flash 6 games for PSP now? I wonder what the performance is. Oh well, I'm still sticking with 1.50. Full homebrew support is always the best for a homebrew fan such as myself.

Its SO MUCH FUN! MAN, I am having a blast with Roco. Awesome awesome awesome.

Also, the browser runs much faster, but the flash isnt supported too well (very slow and run out of memory quick). Im sure we'll get some PSP flash stuff soon.

Faster browser and Loco Roco...Im lovin 2.7...

 » Some advice...

Wait until the two people who programmed the eloader test it out first, they will likely respond to this article and tell us whether or not it actually works.

I will not update until the eloader works, or until we get something better than a dumbed down version of an older version of flash.

 » Homebrew DOES NOT work!

Firmware update DOES Block Homebrew. I have just Confirmed this that the GTA Exploit DOES NOT WORK. THe game loads but says Save file corrupted and starts a new game.

 » Not upgrading.

As fun as it would be to watch xiaoxiao 3 on my PSP, it's still not worth an endless library of ancient games ;p. Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks so, but I enjoy my 600, some-odd games no longer on the market. I'll most likely purchase a second PSP for UMDs that require the update, and for the 2.7+ firmware versions ...

 » SONY SUX

All it would take for me to upgrade would be a big spread of demos you could download to ur psp.. As an example the syphton filter demo which never got public....
And all the realese is one demo of a "i liked it for 2 min" game.. THIS SUX SONY...PLus i heard that the flash u realesed wasent good at all..........

it SUX

does it work?

 » Flash

Yeah, the flash is OK but not that great so far. You do get sounds and music, but a lot of the flash I go to is surrounded by ads and pop ups, which dont help the performance.

The faster browser is a nice addition though. A page that took me 25 seconds to load comes in under 5 seconds now. Nice.

I dont have GTA so I cant confirm if the eloader is broken.

 » To upgrade or not

Does anyone know if the cheats made for GTA still work? If the GTA exploit no longer works, it makes me scared to know if the cheat device still works. Thanks.

In a recent press release about the latest Playstation Portable System Firmware Update (Version 2.7) Sony stated "Nintendo is but a small pimple in the large and expensive layer of skin and firmwares which is Sony Corp" to which Nintendo replied "Sony is a girl"

 » Cracking 2.7.

:D Time for homebrewers to try and break through Sony's new firmware defense. Good luck Fanjita and Ditlew, as well as others who are interested in cracking this firmware. I'm already decoding it line for line.

I believe by tomorrow, it could be open-source.

Also, don't upgrade! Ceras and I are beginning custom 2.0 firmware, with certain new capabilities of the 2.7 firmware. Once again, DO NOT UPGRADE. :D

In regards to andrewr4 on #23:

Aussie's and New Zealanders (w00t!) are classified as europeans... Pretty weird... But anyway, Sony always deprives us so it'll probably be a while

 » to 27...

At least Europeans (yes, all the continents classified as "Europe") get a white PSP next month. The States don't even have a release window yet.

you cant play flash games on this crap, wtf?
i tried already, unless your extremely patient and like using only the arrow keys.....hell wtf am i saying! FLASH 6 IS GAY!!!
uber f.u.c.k.i.n.g. slow a$$ $hit.
i never liked flash games anyways. i just figured upgrading to 2.70 with flash would have a better chance of an exploit.

and no cheat device doesnt work either.

   by andrewr4 - 2006-04-24
 » not quite europe

we may be classified as europe, however we still miss out... no exit or katamari damacy for us yet... no katamari ever from what i've heard... no white psp for aussies yet either :(

   by overflow.tiff - 2006-04-24
 » one more thing...

the psp web browser doesnt ever have any sound, so why would flash anything be any good. its such crap i bet there won't even be an exploit.
